The New Yorker was not making fun of Barack Obama or Muslims. They were making fun of the conservative media. It is sad that nobody seems to understand the subtle humor of the New Yorker. They were only trying to point out the clear lack of verisimilitude in the statements being spewed from the conservative media, showing how ridiculous is is to make statements such as "secret Muslim" or "terrorist fist jab." No one was trying to slam Mr. Obama by publishing this illustration.
The New York Times cover was done as a sarcastic statement, but it went over most peoples' heads, and I think it went over yours too! LOL

The way I look at it is:
Making a presidential candidate into a cartoon terrorist isn't going to make people want to vote for him.
