  • My kids love signing time and baby signing time, thank you for all the entertaining videos that not only is fun to watch and listen to but it's also educational!

  • What going on with her fingers and the tape/bandaids and it looks like there might be something on her hands too? Is that so you can see what she's signing better?

  • um... I love watching kid shows as i have a little brother, i babysit little ones and have a friends with multitudes of siblings, but that lady scares me a bit. i also love sign language though. thank you scary lady, for teaching me "birthday"! ^^ hopefully my mom's friend's son won't tease me about my signing this time T.T

  • Thank you for that special birthday wish! A great way to start my day as I am on my way to share my birthday with my special Rainbow class, a group of terrific twos :)

  • I love Signing Time. I have always been interested in signing, but I have a young grandson who is losing his hearing a little at a time. I'm afraid someday I'll need it, so I can learn a little at a time by watching these videos. I buy one whenever I can scrape up the money. Usually used ones. My little granddaughter has been using simple signs for months now. She is two and she loves Signing Time. We used to watch it every weekday on PBS, but I can't find it anymore.

  • My best friends baby brother who is two, is deaf. He loves signing time, and has learned more sign language through this show, then his sign teacher.

  • So...not going to mention how I got here...but I read the comments and now I'm very curious...What does Nerimon have to do with this?

  • Look at the woman sing.

  • Thanku signing time

  • my brother loves this series

  • happy b day mommy! lol in 4 days my moms b day lol

  • I learned this in August for my grandma for her birthday before she passed away. Thank you for the video, it was a fun way to learn to tell her happy birthday.

  • Wow is it just me or does Signing Time do very little signing in their videos??

  • @Sayrahlu Rachel used to do much more signing, but in Series 2, she just signs key words. It's easier for hearing kids to learn. They did release Sing and Sign recently where she signs selected songs from Series 1 Vol 1-6 all the way through, though.

  • @Sayrahlu I thought that too, but it is a children's video, and they don't want to complicate things..

  • i love to watch ASL videos and so dose my son i have been teaching myself ASL for about 9 years and i plan to go to college to get my degree i do our church music in sign this just makes me want to keep trying

  • There are Regional Signs in ASL. We have several ASL consultants that work on our shows.

  • This is the weirdest birthday song ever! D;

  • I'll give her one thing, I do like how she signs when singing.

  • Well, for one it's copyrighted. Also, I remember someone (I think Rachel) saying that because all the other songs in the series are written by her, it would be weird having this song mixed in with hers.

  • My 5 year old and I LOVE Signing Time! We sit together on the couch and learn. It is "our" time, since he has two older siblings. I have actually been able to pick up several signs that I teach to my Sunday School class of 18 mo.- 2 year old kids. The parents seem very receptive to the fact that I am teaching them the basic, "please","thank you", "help", and some color and animal signs. I also teach "God" and "Jesus."

I would love to be able to go back to college and learn ASL.

  • nice video & nice enjoy !!

  • my kid and i cannot kid this song out of our heads. it comes out at random unexpected times too!

  • Singing HAppy Time&Enjoy time !!THanks!

  • I LOVE BIRTHDAY PARTIES!

  • this is adorible

  • ok so i watch this show with my son and it has helped ALOT he is 17months old and he dose talk alot but when he cant think of the word to use he signs just things like thank you, milk, more, eat etc. but it helps

  • oooh! I love this song!

  • This would be more useful if she actually signed the whole song, instead of just a couple of words. And does anybody know where that sign for birthday comes from? I've never seen it.

  • I agree on signing the whole song

However that sign for birthday is pretty common now. The SEE form of signing "birth" and then "day" isn't used much anymore.

  • Well, us old farts are a little out of date I guess. Everyone I know still uses the birth + day sign. I was just curious about where it originates, since sing language tends to vary from one region to another. I didn't know that it was that "common".

  • I, too, wish she'd sign more words, but i assume those are the key words being taught to the children at the time and more would confuse them maybe? I have seen both signs for Birthday- and actually a few other signs for birthday. the sign for birthday seems to be very regional

  • Hi Kiter.

You are correct that the video is meant to teach key words. When I made my original comment about signing more words, I was thinking of deaf children. If all the words aren't signed, then it's pretty much useless for them since they won't know any of the words used except for the signed ones.

Almost all signs in my experience are very regional. In some cases it differs from one school to another within the same region.

  • this is funny

  • Wow. What a great way to introduce hearing people to signing. I just turned cyber 32 and someone sent this to me. I am still smiling. Hubby is still chuckling. Thanks!

  • my bro loves this

  • The Signing Time series is great and entertaining and is a great way to learn sign vocabulary used in ASL.

However, people often misperceive Rachel does for ASL. The Signing Time series does not teach any grammatical structure. Rachel often uses only selective signs during her songs. If you mute the video, you'll see that she signs four signs throughout the whole song (HAPPY, BIRTHDAY, TODAY, YOU).

  • You're right in the fact that Signing Time! does not teach grammatical structure.

However, in Series 1 of Signing Time!, Rachel signed a whole lot more (like every word of a song that could be signed).

  • You are talking about a sign code system (aka Manually Coded English) in which signs are mapped onto English sentence structure.

ASL uses a different sentence structure, incorporates a 3-D signing space to show interaction between objects, and uses facial expressions, shoulder shrugs, speed of signs, and placement of signs to show inflection of words.

I'm only trying to stress that ASL is a beautiful, complex, and highly nuanced language and it is much more than a sign code system. Cheers!

  • Yes, I understand that. I am taking an ASL class and have learned about most of what you mentioned. However, most people that I have seen signing a song are not doing it in ASL word order. They're using Pidgin Sign English at the very least.

She DOES use less signs in Series 2, but she signs practically everything (PSE, don't get me wrong!) in Series 1.

  • She never intended to teach ASL. She explains that her daughter signs ASL (and in some clips you can see her sign it a little differently that what Rachel shows). The DVDs teach signs. It's called Signing time, not ASL time.

Hearing toddlers would never comprehend grammatical structure from a TV show. When I sign with my kids I use ASL (grammar and all) and the DVDs just make it easier for them to learn and remember cue words.

  • I know that; I've seen several instances of her saying that. I also agree that it is harder to learn ASL grammatical structure from TV. Especially if you're hearing and a toddler. ;)

  • Well it is for people a little older than three; "Look at my hands" from this show is more three-year-old. But this song is catchier than the copyrighted birthday song that people sing at birthday parties.

And songs such as "Show Me A Sign" and "The Good," which are also from Signing Time!, are more appealing to adults than they are to kids. You can find these songs on the music player on the site.

  • Don't forget Shine. I wish they would post those here - but there's a "get it" factor to those songs and many people (from reading some of the more ignorant comments) will just never "get it."

  • I used to watch "Sighning Time" on my local PBS affilliate(sp) and I have been teaching myself to sign online. Thanks for posting these clips.

  • Fantastic!!!! I played this for my daughter on her birthday and she was thrilled. She is a HUGE fan of signing time and so am I :-)

  • I love this! That tune really sticks in my head. I've been signing/singing it to my daughter in preparation for her 1st birthday. It's so much catchier than the traditional happy birthday song.

  • I agree with Purplewowies.... what is everyone finding so weird about this? It's a children's birthday song with ASL. I think it's cute, my son loves it.

  • Thanks so much for posting. I was looking for a completely random greeting to send my sis-in-law for her birthday and this was PERFECT!

  • love ya rachel!!!! this is one of my fave signing time songs!
