Amazingly the worlds second highest mountain Peak K2 is more dangerous than Everest, only few hundreds have climbed K2 as oppose to 4000 to Mt Everest.
@bghawa lol, your comments are the biggest irony I've ever seen "coz u r poor in english word meaning".. right on buddy, keep on making this world a shittier place by breathing air and flapping your mouth.. oh wait, I mean fingers, because we know you'd just sulk into a shadow if any real conflict came to your doorstep
actually being buried on the side of mount everest seems like the greatest honor you could give a climber. honestly, the highest peak, the goal of almost every climber. that seems like a very fitting resting place for anyone who enjoys climbing.
@TheJigglyfat,but its the second highest peak K2 which is more dangerous than Mt everest, only few have climbed K2.Chances of coming back from K2 peak is minimal and one in 4 lcimbers have lost their lives.
... if you asked climbers where they would like to have their ashes sprinked, i'd bet more than a few would say on Everest. Sure, not those who have passed by the poor souls left up there but ...
You can use corpses at markers on your map they're there for so long.. i find it interesting how a entire life ends on some point as remote as Everest.
fakeeee thats not even mount everest, you can tell by the could formations in the sky, they stop appearing at an average of just 5,000 feet, which is much shorter the base of everest, nice try asshole
@ThinksHeIsACritic In my oponion it is about respecting the peace of the dead. It is a big enough reminder to pass a dead body. No need to take pictures of it.
Why do people keep saying fake? There are hundreds of photos like this of poor climbers for the world to see on the net and in books. It's 100% real and anyone who says otherwise should do there research before leaving such stupid comments. R.I.p to all the poor souls lost on the mountains of the world.
It is not ethical to take pictures of dead climbers. Death is a terrible thing. Even the victims of wars get a grave to tedy in, but not these people. Think of what it must be like for their loved ones to see them like that. I am a climber myself, but I would never film dead bodies out of respect to my fellows who died on their way.
@sampion2000 ...correct.I'm also a climber and alpinist and I think the same. But some people have completely lost the plot in the facebook-youtube-I-wanna-appear-era...
@sampion2000 It is not "unethical". If you thought so why did you watch the video? This is a great reminder to people who think they want to do extreme things, that this could be the outcome.
No fake. Everest is a morgue. I'd pay the sherpas a few hundred more to drag my body off the mountain, cut me into pieces if need be. Me, I don't have the nads and like my toes and fingers to much. I'll stick with the class 2 & 3 14er's in Colorado's high country.
@spencerwyles Somehow I feel that passing the corpse of a man who died trying to do the same climb that you are about to attempt might not be the most confidence-inspiring of moments...
@oddba11 passing a man who had the courage to take on the challenge and the dream of completing it... but perhaps not the fortune of good weather or strength to carry on... but you pass him in good health and favourable conditions its the confidence boost you might need/want to show you that you are close to realising your dream and you'd spare a moment for those who got close but not quite as far.
Clearly the vast majority of folks responding the clip are not climbers, nor informed re: climbing on any of the fourteen 8,000 meter peaks. That is the South Col, and that is definately one of the many in-situ bodies on mountain.
Hell, Conrad Anker located Mallory's body a few years ago right where where he died in 1924 at about 28,000 feet on the North Ridge, which was the traditional route attempted prior to the Tibetan frontier being closed to foreigners and the Nepalese side openign up.
Anyone who takes it upon themselves to give a "glacial burial" to a dead body he's not related to should be charged with a crime. These bodies should be left alone until technology is available to bring them down, for a proper burial at home. Dropping them into a crevasse makes them almost impossible to recover later, and serves no purpose, except perhaps to make some self-important meddler feel more important.
@DominicMetal1979 and what about the many cases of climbing teams being asked by the relatives of the fallen to bury them on the mountain. "Self-important meddlers" do not have the time to go about burying every corpse they find on their way to the top. It is usually specified teams (sometimes including family members of the deceased) who climb with the aim of giving a dignified burial to people whose lives revolved around the mountains and wished to rest there for eternity.

An estimated 300 people have died climbing this mountain in the past 50 years. Half of the bodies have not been recovered. Pretty much every memoir/diary of a succesfull climber I've read has included walking past corpses. This is not uncommon at all.
Sorry, but everyone climbing (if you still can call that climbing if you see what kind of "mountaineers" are getting pulled up there by the Sherpas) up the Sagarmatha knows what risk he taks. And if he or she is not surviving that adventure why putting more peoples live at stake just to get down the death bodies ? Leave them there. It's not the worst place to be buried...
I can't vouch for this particular video however people who die above the last base camp at Everest which is 21,000ft about..are left there.. there is no way to bring them down..as well as the thousands of oxygen tanks that are left there as well..A man barely has enough energy and consentration to bring himself down..so forget about a dead man..Its truly a one way ticket when you pay 65,000 bucks to climb that mountain..
ah..no. It's not. There are many bodies up there...Google George Mallory. He died in 1924, they found his body in 1999...mummified. "Green Boots" is another.
Why is this a "human tragedy" that the bodies can't be brought down ? If you are dumb enough to climb up there (20% death rate ??) then you should be aware there is a high chance that you will rot away forever on some rock. It's a choice, not a tragedy.
i watched a ski extreme video in the 80s, a japanese guy trying to be first guy to ski down everest, camera was miles away. He had a chute but it dint slow him down, he hit an ice wall at about 70 miles per hour and was never seen again
@fjohnson747 probably take 4 or + people to haul down one body, even the strongest person can hardly survive just making the trip. You'd have like the movie Private Ryan, but at least that kid was alive. Several posters have said "Sad" but while I agree with Markse444 that it would be gut-wrenching, not sad. Everybody up there knows the package they are buying. Dispose of a body respectfully, but they are part of the mountain now. Most would probably want it that way anyway.
@1960markN it would talke 20 people to haul 1 person at say 7000m. We are not talking about death zone here which is above 8000. Such a rescue plan would undoubebly result in more casualties and would do more bad then good. Albeit there have been some really in your face rescues on Everest, and an inyourface amazing recovery of climber named Beck Weathers and amazing save of 3 people by Anatoli Boukreev but he was one of the most talented climbers that ever lived.
what is sad is that people walk by, but there is no ''rescue'' mission to sent those bodies to the families. i read somewhere that it would be to expensive.
@1960markN Many corpses are identifiable, some are not well known but majority of them are well known. One of the recent ones was a body of a climber who went alone to the summit but was very weak he died on his descent about 400 feet of summit as he was climbing down his body was hanging on a rope upside down for a year people have been passing it when they were coming down. Later his firend found a camera and there were 2 pictures of climber just before he died. Sad stuff.
I may never have climbed such a mountain, nor do I know anything about what it takes to do such a feat successfully. However if I had walked passed such a dying person, I'm not sure how I could live with myself afterwards.
@markse4444 Major reason why people climb Everest is not to climb some rock, its to actually find out what kind of person they are. Mt Everest climb will reveal to anyone who tries to climb it what kind of person you really are, as all the masks are removed. People climb it to face their mortality usually those who have something against death and want to come close to it so that they can catch it... some do and never come back. Its not a coincidence mountain is called Ever-rest.
@Ouija121085 The reason they climb is immaterial, although it is certainly rooted in self-serving vanity. No, what is distasteful is that 40 people walked passed someone dying without pooling their energies to help them. As a human being, I find that fact impossible to square.
@markse4444 When you meet climbers who climb 8000'ers they are the most self-absorbed bastards you will ever meet :) some are pure assholes that wouldn't give you a glass of water if it were 2 feet from you. Others would drop down their gear and oxygen and help you no matter what even if they die. People are different. At 8000+m you cannot judge anyone some people are simply not strong enough or have not enough experience to offer any help. But you could offer to relay last msg or so
@markse4444 Everest was cleaned up last year. All empty O bottles were removed along with other waste. Bodies were not removed but to my knowledge they were moved off the tracks. They'll never bring bodies down. Rules of the mountain plus it's way too dangerous to send 10 or 20 other men to their deaths (possibly) for the sake of bodies.
@MikeWillis1984 As the matter of fact two men were sent to retrieve the body of Hannalore Schmatz, an indian policeman and his sherpa companion. Both men died while trying to move her body, they fell into the abyss. After this no onther body removal was ever tried. What has been done is to remove them from the ropes and put them aside the track, but they are still visible and extremely gut wrenching sight but its the payment the mountain takes.Everest takes its tool every year.
There are over 200 bodies scattered on Mt Everest. Those who climb Mt Everst come across many of them and they are known for their nicknames and serve as a waypoint or landmark. Some heart wrenching stories of a woman who collapsed at a descent just 800 feet from the summit and was left to die because people could not help her. Another guy who got blind at the summit was helped to about 1000 feet down but it took 12 hrs so they left him alone to die.... many stories very sad.
These bodies do not belong on Everest; they need to be properly disposed of (carried away). I do not understand how people can pay upwards of 65,000$ per person to be guided up this mountain, yet they cannot pay a fraction of that to remove the bodies? Really, the bodies, the empty ozygen tanks, detritus from camps and the horrendous waste at the base camps are all unacceptable: it is enough to drive a mountain man to tears.
@markse4444 its seems that you do not understand that mt everst is 8km high.. at that altitude there is a region called "deathzone" where majority of people die because of lack of oxygen and tremendous taxing it takes on human body. Weaker people simply shutdown and die. There is no aircraft taht can lift that high on such a trecherous mountain and remove injured or dead bodies. You sign an agreement that you may die, and people know the risk.
@Ouija121085 that's not the point. Every effort needs to be made to provide those people with a dignified burial or disposal. They are NOT sign posts nor are they meant to be a sideshow for tourists to the top; I'm sure they would have been mortified to learn that that was their fate. If I had my way, the mountain would be closed until they are removed. It's not just the decent thing to do, it's right.
@markse4444 it seems u dont understand what kind of conditions rule at 8000+m at the summit. Mt Everest summit pierces the stratosphere, meaning temperature can drop down to -78C which is instant freeze. Death zone means you have limited time to pass thru it, once you enter it you start to die as your body cannot acclimatize at any point and you have a timer on your life if you stay minutes too long you die! There is no way those bodies can be removed. They stay.
@markse4444 I think climbers of this caliber know the risks and are willing to take them. They also know that if they die on the way, their bodies will remain on the mountain. My guess is, they don't mind.
@Ouija121085 The V-22 has a stated service ceiling of 25,000 ft (7,620 m) which is short of the peak, but still pretty high it can also lift 20,000 lb (9,070 kg) of internal cargo. I am willing to bet that with some modification like injecting pure oxygen in to the engines which the USAF does with its high altitude rescue helicopters it could potential reach the peak. But none of the organisations that have access to the V22 have any interest in picking up other peoples dead bodies.
do people ever leave notes about the deceased they have to leave behind? Or do people know about certain bodies that are notorious on the mountain? Very very sad. But at least these faithful departed souls died doing something they love.
just search, "bodies on everest" there not fake, if someone dies on everest, they stay there, its too difficult to move the remains of someone down that rough terrain, and the weather is way to rough for any helicopters to get up there, are the bodies fake? no, they were living people.
@armystrong8808 Not being pedantic, just an interesting fact; helicopters can't fly above about 20,000ft without taking huge risks, due to the thinness of the atmosphere.
@alexparker100 they have recently come up with helicopters that can fly up that high you tube and google it i saw a vid here a few days ago of a helicopter touching 1 leg doen to the summit of everest its a striped down swedish copter i think
i thought the sound of this video was a sound my stomach was making

I can't vouch for this particular video however people who die above the last base camp at Everest which is 21,000ft about..are left there.. there is no way to bring them down..as well as the thousands of oxygen tanks that are left there as well..A man barely has enough energy and consentration to bring himself down..so forget about a dead man..Its truly a one way ticket when you pay 65,000 bucks to climb that mountain..

Why is this a "human tragedy" that the bodies can't be brought down ? If you are dumb enough to climb up there (20% death rate ??) then you should be aware there is a high chance that you will rot away forever on some rock. It's a choice, not a tragedy.

It makes no sense to risk life to retrieve a corpse. Put aside sentimentalism and THINK.
fjohnson747 1 month ago
@fjohnson747 probably take 4 or + people to haul down one body, even the strongest person can hardly survive just making the trip. You'd have like the movie Private Ryan, but at least that kid was alive. Several posters have said "Sad" but while I agree with Markse444 that it would be gut-wrenching, not sad. Everybody up there knows the package they are buying. Dispose of a body respectfully, but they are part of the mountain now. Most would probably want it that way anyway.
1960markN 1 month ago
@1960markN it would talke 20 people to haul 1 person at say 7000m. We are not talking about death zone here which is above 8000. Such a rescue plan would undoubebly result in more casualties and would do more bad then good. Albeit there have been some really in your face rescues on Everest, and an inyourface amazing recovery of climber named Beck Weathers and amazing save of 3 people by Anatoli Boukreev but he was one of the most talented climbers that ever lived.

what is sad is that people walk by, but there is no ''rescue'' mission to sent those bodies to the families. i read somewhere that it would be to expensive.

were they able to identify who it is?
1960markN 1 month ago
@1960markN Many corpses are identifiable, some are not well known but majority of them are well known. One of the recent ones was a body of a climber who went alone to the summit but was very weak he died on his descent about 400 feet of summit as he was climbing down his body was hanging on a rope upside down for a year people have been passing it when they were coming down. Later his firend found a camera and there were 2 pictures of climber just before he died. Sad stuff.

I may never have climbed such a mountain, nor do I know anything about what it takes to do such a feat successfully. However if I had walked passed such a dying person, I'm not sure how I could live with myself afterwards.
markse4444 1 month ago
@markse4444 Major reason why people climb Everest is not to climb some rock, its to actually find out what kind of person they are. Mt Everest climb will reveal to anyone who tries to climb it what kind of person you really are, as all the masks are removed. People climb it to face their mortality usually those who have something against death and want to come close to it so that they can catch it... some do and never come back. Its not a coincidence mountain is called Ever-rest.
Ouija121085 1 month ago
@Ouija121085 The reason they climb is immaterial, although it is certainly rooted in self-serving vanity. No, what is distasteful is that 40 people walked passed someone dying without pooling their energies to help them. As a human being, I find that fact impossible to square.
markse4444 1 month ago

MikeWillis1984 1 month ago
@MikeWillis1984 As the matter of fact two men were sent to retrieve the body of Hannalore Schmatz, an indian policeman and his sherpa companion. Both men died while trying to move her body, they fell into the abyss. After this no onther body removal was ever tried. What has been done is to remove them from the ropes and put them aside the track, but they are still visible and extremely gut wrenching sight but its the payment the mountain takes.Everest takes its tool every year.

@Ouija121085 They still never got her. in fact, she was only able to be recovered because the strong wind pushed her off the mountain.
Sumgui2009 1 month ago

Really, the bodies, the empty ozygen tanks, detritus from camps and the horrendous waste at the base camps are all unacceptable: it is enough to drive a mountain man to tears.
markse4444 1 month ago
@markse4444 its seems that you do not understand that mt everst is 8km high.. at that altitude there is a region called "deathzone" where majority of people die because of lack of oxygen and tremendous taxing it takes on human body. Weaker people simply shutdown and die. There is no aircraft taht can lift that high on such a trecherous mountain and remove injured or dead bodies. You sign an agreement that you may die, and people know the risk.
Ouija121085 1 month ago
@Ouija121085 that's not the point. Every effort needs to be made to provide those people with a dignified burial or disposal. They are NOT sign posts nor are they meant to be a sideshow for tourists to the top; I'm sure they would have been mortified to learn that that was their fate. If I had my way, the mountain would be closed until they are removed. It's not just the decent thing to do, it's right.
markse4444 1 month ago
@markse4444 it seems u dont understand what kind of conditions rule at 8000+m at the summit. Mt Everest summit pierces the stratosphere, meaning temperature can drop down to -78C which is instant freeze. Death zone means you have limited time to pass thru it, once you enter it you start to die as your body cannot acclimatize at any point and you have a timer on your life if you stay minutes too long you die! There is no way those bodies can be removed. They stay.
Ouija121085 1 month ago 2
@markse4444 I think climbers of this caliber know the risks and are willing to take them. They also know that if they die on the way, their bodies will remain on the mountain. My guess is, they don't mind.
lyricarol 1 month ago
@markse4444 Ok,so why dont you do it then if you are so smart?Go and recover those bodies yourself,do the decent thing for once.

But none of the organisations that have access to the V22 have any interest in picking up other peoples dead bodies.

just search, "bodies on everest" there not fake, if someone dies on everest, they stay there, its too difficult to move the remains of someone down that rough terrain, and the weather is way to rough for any helicopters to get up there, are the bodies fake? no, they were living people.
armystrong8808 2 months ago
@armystrong8808 Not being pedantic, just an interesting fact; helicopters can't fly above about 20,000ft without taking huge risks, due to the thinness of the atmosphere.
