  • Just seeing how hard Judy struggles not to laugh at Mickey's drum antics convinces me that theirs was a lovely and rare friendship. I love that he could give her such a giggle.

  • Judy Garland....what a talent and a tragedy! Other than Mickey Rooney no one gave a damn about her including her own mother! Her family and friends saw her nothing more than a money train.

  • 6 years later Judy garland died:(

It's really sad.Judy and Mickey were so close.then..she was gone.and Mickey was alone.he must certainly miss her still

  • Fact: Frances Ethel Gumm (Judy) was signed to her first film contract at MGM in 1935. Joe Yule (Mickey) starred in the Mickey McGuire series of shorts beginning in 1927. He was signed to MGM in 1934 and played Blackie as a child in Manhattan Melodrama (the last film John Dillenger saw before being gunned down). Mickey and Judy were first paired in Thoroughbreds Don't Cry (1937) and their last was Words and Music (1948). This clip, from Judy's weekly TV show (1963-64).

  • He was a devoted friend friend to her.....unlike many who just used her and turned their backs on her. She accomplished so much in just the short time she was around. I am just 33, and I prefer this over the "stuff" of today.......if I could have only been born much earlier.

  • Apparently he threw himself on her coffin at her funeral. They were so cute together.

  • I may be the biggest Garland/Rooney fan in the world but never have seen this segment of her show before; they still have the same chemistry and it's a joy to watch.

  • Funny when she finally started laughing

    'I..I..haa'

  • there majic together

  • Rooney wass top box office attraction in 1938 (and for long thereafter) when the somewhat less-known Garland joined him the first of their movies together. While Garland had a boatload of talent, "Love Finds Andy Hardy" helped showcase that talent and served as a springboard for her. Then came "The Wizard of Oz", and the rest is history.

  • One could make the argument that the greatest actor/entertainer who ever lived is still alive in Mickey Rooney...just from the sheer volume and versatility of his works.

  • "Love this, Mickey proves being youthful is nothing to do with wrinkles"

  • "Don't bother me while I practice!"

I love Mickey's antics when he was on the drums!

"You sing so loud I can hardly hear my drum playing!!"

  • I love the little giggle that sneaks out at 5:11 .. I bet it would be hard to sing a serious song while only imagining what's going on behind you. XD

These two were adorable together - in their movies and otherwise.

  • This is from the 1st JGS that was taped 6/7/63 but aired as show #7 but this segment was filmed at a later date before it was aired. You can see her with a different hair style and she was a tad heavier and her makeup was different. They also redid the opening song "I feel a Song Coming On" where she had the same hairdo. The 1st opening number was Keep your sunnyside up but was never aired but can be seen on outtakes on the dvd. I guess they needed more material so they filmed this segment.

  • To me Mickey seems very much like he did as a kid, whereas Judy is very changed. Not in a bad way, she's just very different than she was in the Hardy movies.

  • This is hilarious - I love rooney and garland together. Classic, he was always too busy for her back in the old movies! I would always root for them to get together; they would start strong, the it's like Rooney's roles would get ADD and totally loose track of getting with Garland! They're great together - back then and now. This is wonderful. And they were both popular in their own right, Rooney was hilarious and Garland was so talented at singing, they were an equal partnership.

  • klol this is hilarious i love it

  • Judy must be wearing heels because she's 4'11" and Mick is 5'2"

  • This segment was not filmed 6/23/63 they filmed this before it aired since u can see her hair style is totally different even in the opening number she had a different hairstyle then when she did "Old Man river "and "when the sun comes out" I read about it when i bought the dvd set and the book about what went on during the series which was really fascinating.

  • tehe i love 2:35

  • Comment removed

  • she looks good here if she stopped the pills then she would have aged better

  • i'd like to state that was my dad. not me. but judy garland is a good singer.

  • Great clip. Shows the comic side of Judy that many of her contemporaries found so fascinating.

  • They were like brother/sister. When she died, he was overcome with grief.

  • YOUR WAY OFF!!! Mickey never used her for his own fame>in those days MGM controlled their every move, they did what they were told. Mickey was famous in his own right!! Best known for Andy Hardy. Mickey loved her like a sister, They were very close FRIENDS. Its been said he tried to help her several times even at the very end taking her right to his doctor who had helped him when he had hit bottom. A person has to want to help themselves in order for it to work. He couldn't do it for her.

  • Now I'm a huge fan of Judy Garland, but I think you're forgetting the fact that Mickey was an established star BEFORE Judy. The reason MGM paired the two together is because they hoped that Mickey's popularity would rub off on Judy and kick-start her career.

  • @HotbunsLalla That is exactly right!!!! Mickey was the #1 Box Office movie star in America from 1939-1941 Pure Star Power!!! The two of them together well that was just Magical... It made both of them Legends!

  • @HotbunsLalla Once Judy did OZ she was a huge star but so was Mickey. They were paired together because they were awesome together. MGM was not dumb, they saw what worked.

  • I have always really liked Mr. Rooney,

ever since he has been on 60 Minutes.

  • haha wrong one :-)

However, Mickey Rooney AND Andy Rooney are the best in their fields

  • Tis reminds me of the Babes in Barns sketch from The Carol Burnett Show, they were still great together, whoever wrote this sketch was a genious.

  • there is one like this, were they sing this song when they were in babes on broadway together!!

they were the perfect on screen couple!! BOTH FANTASTIC singers, Actors,Dancers, Entertainers

  • Right here Judy reminds me very much of when she sings "the man that got away"

  • why are you so superficial?

  • Yeah she was amazing, as a child,

BUT also as a teenager, as a woman, As a mother and as a SHOW BUISNESS LEDGEND!!!

  • they were so great. this is so great.

  • They changed in the outside but never in the inside... they were old and different but no one took their charm, beautifulness and style. GOD BLESS U JUDY GARLAND and MICKEY ROONEY!

  • I agree!!

  • I will perform in a play of theather where I´m going to represent mickey rooney hehehe .

  • Wow!! really?? i LOVE Mickey! & Judy

  • Hillarious!..

    :)

  • So Beautiful..

    :)

  • it´s great :)

  • They were so good together...I think mickey was always a true friend to judy and I just love watching this.

  • Talent

  • darn tootin.....

  • She's great!

  • its called But Not For Me!

  • i love judy

  • a new deluxe 5 dvd collection was released with 4 of the pair's best "lets put on a show!" vehicles: Babes in Arms, Strike up the Band, Babes on Broadway, and Girl Crazy. also a bonus disc with lots of extras, a commerative book and lots of production photos. Its a great collection. about $40 - $50, at online stores or places like Best Buy. grab it now! the kids from High School Musical had nothing on these Hep kids!

  • What is that song called, wich Judy sings at last when mickey's playing drums?

  • It's George and Ira Gershwin's "But Not For Me" from Girl Crazy. Mickey and Judy starred in the film version in 1943. It's very pretty in the film.

  • @Kristian: This is "But not for me" by George and Ira Gershwin. Lots of people sang it beside Judy, among them Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

  • Yeah but those were all after it was written for the show Girl Crazy.

  • Their best film together was Life Begins for Andy Hardy. Judy was her loveliest in that film.

  • Do you go around smapping Judy Garland videos, you asshole? I've seen your worthless comments on like 4 of her videos. STFU already, stop being jealous and go do your mom.

  • Thank You =)

  • I wish there was entertainment like this. Good clean fun everyone could watch. I was born after this, way after this and wish my generation had a chance to see this

  • Same here I wish I could have seen it. I agree 100%

  • I agree with you 100%! Most of the movies these days r just pathetic. It gets quite depressing when u think that this generation doesnt have entertainment like this anymore.

  • the only thing went wrong with judy was losing her father too soon. If he had have been around most of what happened wouldnt have happened, he would have protected her, his baby, his frances. she lost him at the tender age of 12.... just when she'd sighned her MGM contract..... damn shame.

  • Dear RosineAelise,

    Mr.Mayer wasn't the only person..who

stupidly and criminally had people give

    poor Mr.Garland drugs.

According to a new book about Ms.Garland?

Her mother Mrs.Ethel Gumm gave her daughter

drugs for sleeping and other needs.

  • amazing!! Thanks for the vid!! :)

  • Wunderbar! Klasse dieser Ausschnitt!

  • I'm convinced it was stress, coupled with accumulative effects of ingesting amphetemines she was prescribed since a teenager by Louis B Mayer. Child abuse enforced by the Studio system. The horror.Judy I LOVE you.

  • yeah they aged way before their time....wierd!

  • well people had much shorter life expectantcies back then. well idk if that has anything to do with aging.

  • its kind of funny how old they seem but they were still youngish

  • Why isn't entertainment like this today?

  • i no... i love this entertainment... now its just about sexuality.

  • OMG I love Mickey Rooney and Judy! Thanks for posting!Great video!

  • Mickey Rooney will be speaking at the LA Film Festival tonight @ the Hammer Museum in Westwood, CA. I'll be in attendance and I'm looking forward to it!

  • Neat. Do you have or know where to get the clip of her and Martha Raye on Judy's show?

  • Oh wonderful thanks fore sharing. Little teardrop in my eyes.

  • When I was young I was in Judy's fanclub. We were her fan group at the CBS dress rehearsals and shows. She was incredible! It was the most incredible time of my life! One day Judy arrived without makeup and her hair in rollers. She took us up in the small elevator with her. Judy was incredibly great to her fans during that time!

  • likfe was light then and they made brighter tose times, thanks to you

  • I love them together

  • siggghhhh...see part 2 for comment

  • Thank you soooo much for the video! I love Judy!

  • Thanks for the clips! I've never seen these. What great talents, and what chemistry!
