Age might not bring wisdom but Roth has produced his best work, by far, since, at least, his middle to late 50's, typically a period of decline for most artists. Tout Pynchon, Delillo, Cormac McCarthy if you will, but Roth has developed a greater body of significant work than all of the above combined. None can match his rigor, output or consistency of excellence. He is forever telling us the last thing we want to hear, yet never out of a nihilistic impulse.
