I liked the n64 as a console but found it a shame that the racing titles were generally pretty poor. In fact they released many poor games but when they got it right they produced pure gold eg: All the THQ wrestling games, pretty much anything with mario, Zelda, (I know its obvious an cliched) goldeneye and perfect dark.
There was only one thing I didn't like about the N64. That was the limited view range, in which PS1 was bad too, but not quite as bad as the N64. Still both are great consloes and I love em both hehehe.
@kujiko88 Both where great consoles - though I disagree on the view distance. The n64 simply had no big devs working on 'realistic' racers - it had too much family gaming going on. Arcade games such as Rush 2049, Ridge Racer 64, and the F1 games on the n64 featured much longer draw distances and higher resolution over their playstation counterparts.
I really liked the N64, but my God, when it came to racing games this console sucked ass in a major way. Compare it to the Saturn and the PSone, which was around at that time, and you´ll realize within a second how much the N64 sucked at racing games. However alot of other games became classics, like Goldeneye, Super Mario 64 and so on, but if you want racing, go somewhere else.
Yeah, it got worse when the Game Cube came out. Nintendo solely focused on the usual Mario/James Bond games. The N64 was pretty good actually when it came to driving simulators. You had GT64, World Driver, MRC, Top Gear, Rally Challenge2000, F1 Championship. I mean with the PS1, they had Need For Speed and Gran Turismo, which were awesome games, but you had to use the friggen d-pad and not the analog stick. To me, the PC had some of the best driving games in the late 90's.
However, as far as the psone goes, it had ALOT more racing games besides NFS and GT. It also had the Toca series, Ridge Racer, including Rage Racer, V-Rally, Colin Mcrae and so on.
As far as the D-pad goes, on the PS, Sony released the new dual-shock controller with the analog stick around the same time as GT was released, so problem solved ;-).
To this day I still think that the Ps and the Dreamcast are the BEST consoles as far as racing games goes.
not totaly true, n64 had a lot of good racing games like f-1 world gp, world driver championship, top gear rally, star wars racer, diddy kong racing, mario kart 64, f-zero x, ridge racer 64 and so on.
ps one just had the gran turismo 1 and 2 that were really above any n64 racer.
Honestly - Do you considder Diddy Kong Racing and Mario Kart racing games??
(Don´t get my wrong I like those games, but you cannot compare them to games like Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo, it´s a very different genre)
I don´t think we will ever agree on this, for instance I think that the N64 version of Ridge Racer is flat out horrible compared to Ridge Racer Type 4 on the Psone, or Rage Racer for that matter.
Yeah they are racing in the sense that you need to get from a to b. However there is absolutely no tecnique involved, other than the the use of weapons, and there is little or no physics at all.
You would never compare games like that to Nfs, Toca, Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer etc.
I have Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast, okay game but I actually prefer Rush, the first one, on the N64.
I think that Rush and Top Gear overdrive were the only really descent racing games on the N64.
Don't get me wrong, I love the 64 and have many games for it, but there are so many out of service 64s that one day they'll probably gather them all together and construct an entire highway made of nothing but 64s. Collect them all if you want as I know you do, but I think they'll always be worthless.
My N64 is 11+ yrs old and has never broke. Ive never had a console break in my ownership and im susppect of how other people treat theirs. a worthless console will be the 360, as that is a badly buit system. Never owned one, never will
I'm sorry you misunderstood. When I said "out of service" I meant there are so many sitting on used video game store's shelves or stacked by the dozens in the back room because so many have been traded in due to it's unpopularity due to too many low res textured mediocre titles. I bought my 64 new when it came out and like you have never had any reliability issues with it. It is the most well built console of all time. Don't even get me started on the JUNKBOX 360!
well we could also say something about ps1's blocky textures, long loading times, disc reading errors and many shitty games, now could we?
n64 is a great retro console with classics like mario 64, zelda ocarina of time and goldeneye 007 that will always be fun games and a inspiration for game developers.

Looks good but F-Zero X is still my favorite racing game on the N64.

@l34052
That´s what I´ve been trying to say :-)
Alot of people however seem to disagree, which makes no sense, seeing how bad it looks in the video.

I mean...Look at the freakin´ framerate, it looks as if its in slowmotion or something for crying out loud!!

n64 was stronger than ps one (let alone the sega saturn), but it had some bottlenecks that made development problematic.
but I also think this video doesn't show how the game really runs.

yes, dkr and mk are racing games, obviously. they just aren't realistic.
I also didn't like ridge racer 64 too much, but check out rush 2049

This appears to be Nintendo's answer to Sega Touring Car for the N64.
