R4P,  You have Robbie Buchanan listed as having written this, but wasn't it Michel Colombier who wrote this piece of music ? Can you check ? If I'm wrong, I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong.

The piece was composed by Michel Colombier. Performed by a who's who of session musicians with Buchanan being principal keyboardist on the score, not just on this track (check out "Golden Love" and then tell me where the keys end and the strings begin). Not sure why he got "performance" credit on this one, probably a tip of the hat. They collaborated a lot over the years.

La-La Land just released the score on CD.

European channel FilmNet used this theme daily c:a 1987 - 1991.

i cant really hear a difference but the golden child was made in '86 and i think at this time most of the synths were analogue

Digital synths (like the Yamaha DX7) had been around since 1983, as had MIDI. Madonna's TRUE BLUE album was also released in 1986, as was the Top Gun soundtrack, and those records had digital synths all over them. The synth guitar on this sounds exactly like a DX7 preset, as does some of the brass. only the fat bassline sounds analogue, most probably a MiniMoog.
