soul/spirit what is a soul and spirit. It's just the human concept of not fully understanding the diversity of human thinking. so basically there is no soul or spirit, has anyone seen a soul doe's science mention soul's and spirit's no because it fall's into the religion side of thing's which has no fact's.
You have to love Alan Watts. In all the years I've studied Buddhism, I'm never heard such a clear and common sense explanation of what the concept of emptiness is really about. Simply brilliant.
@audaciousvideos561 It seems only a few people know of his brilliance. He is very talented at articulating a message. The main stream world may never learn of him.
past is now present is now future is now . suffering is upon all just and unjust . some suffer too much some suffer to little . no god no devil only us inhabitants on this earth look into space so much of space yet on this planet look at all the ideas all the technologies all the people all the crowds all the politics . this is your world now .
"Discussing" Buddhism is anti Buddhist. The middle way is not to herd cats, but first to turn inward to ask why the hell a need to herd the cats struck you, and then to observe the cats herding themselves. Just meditate on it, folks. Comments - even this one - will be misconstrued as a rule.
You must miss the whole point of Buddhas teaching, he emphasizes the middle path, which is moderation. He tried to starve himself and not drink, but he found out that wasn't going to work. That's the whole reason he realized that the middle path was the way to go. It's completely realistic, Buddha survived as well as many other Buddhists. Pain is real, but only because of our neurotic nerve endings, suffering will end whenever one becomes enlightened that is when you know the answer.
I feel like if you follow Buddhism 100% you will just waste away of hunger and dehydration. It has good viewpoints but is NOT realistic in modern American society, nor is it compatible with surviving in this violent world we live in. I, personally, don't feel like starving to death or dehydrating due to ignoring by body's desire to feed and hydrate itself...if it was painless, well, that would be an entirely different thing entirely then. Pain is very real, and Buddhism acts like it's not...
the FIRST noble truth of buddhism is that life IS suffering. the whole foundation of Buddhism is concerning the apparent reality of pain and suffering.
@alliant So basically Buddhism tells me to suffer even more vs. avoiding it? So if a lion is about to eat me I should sit and meditate and take it vs. running to avoid a lesser evil?
buddhism does not promote suffering, this is a profound misunderstanding. and why would we ever meditate in such a severe situation requiring physical action? physical action can be considered a form of meditation - in the sense our thinking is absent and we do not differentiate ourselves from our experience.
@alliant A year ago I severed a nerve in my leg. I had severe pain 24/7 daily for a year. I admit, meditation did help me to relax but was by no means a cure all. The pain was still sharp, intense, and torturous. The meditation did not free me from any suffering, nor did accepting it. I still suffered...
@utube3215 food is a drug. sleep is a drug. perhaps i should omit those from my life too. It seems nirvana is death. To be completely nothing, no ego, nothing. I've done that and I don't like it, it makes me feel helpless; am i supposed to go to work a vegetable with no personality? A brain labotomy could do that. I do not condone that, however; that was just a joke. Buddhism has great points but isn't the end all be all of life...Do they believe in rebirth? That would suck to live again haha
@utube3215 In my view, you can be what you want, and have a personality as you like. But if you contemplate on the idea that you cannot fully know who you are. That you can't have a full control over yourself, then you can let go, even if it is just for a moment. Because I see that there is really nothing to hold on to, so even the letting go is achieved for you. I'm no Buddhist, but I enjoy a lot of the concepts presented in Buddhist philosophy. It's so sad for people who cannot, through some subconscious prejudice - make any sense with the indian religions. When a man like gandhi exists, you take note of that - and you ask 'how can I be more like him?'... I love every single world in absolute entirity, and that makes me like god. I love so much that I could cry. Look how absolutely real we are, we are so good at being real like. :D
It's awesome how Buddhist philosophy is innocently compatible with completely everything in modern science even though it's centuries older. I can't believe all of these religions just repetitively ask an imaginary being for things while monks meditate; concentrated only on exploration of the soul. Who gets the most accurate description of quantum mechanics AND the universe according to science? So it's true: there's a good side to everything. Buddhism is the one religion that made people sane.
I think you're right, I'm often concerned with being scrutinized when using the phrase "[Given organization] isn't really a religion" but for Buddhism, I can definitely make an exception. It's the only form of spiritual endowment that hasn't been hi-jacked by corrupted bastards. No beloved Gods to provide a mandate from heaven; just trying to live a life free of desire and suffering.. there's simply nothing bad to say about Buddhism.
@GuitarMannnnnn Well said. However, Buddhism is not a religion. It is a philosophy. A way to live. And that is why so many people embrace it, in my opinion.
@GuitarMannnnnn You are WRONG. BUDDHISM IS NOT CONSIDERED A RELIGION!!!!!! But I see what you are saying. All religion is false. Buddhism, again, is not considered a religion!!!!
What I mean is that it is 'officially' considered a religion. For example, if you were to fill out a form requesting your denomination or religion, Buddhism appears. It's more of a philosophy, really. Desire leads to suffering, and if you alleviate your desires, you end personal suffering. Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with you. Buddhism isn't a religion.
I respectfully disagree. The consciousness that vibrates on and off, as Watts describes is strikingly similar to the quantum field or space time foam that is observed to generate subatomic particles in a science called quantum mechanics. Soul/spirit is not a strictly supernatural thing. We are of one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively via different sentient beings. Quantum mechanics shows this to be true. Soul/spirit is completely compatible with science.
Any astrophysicist/theoretical physicist will tell you that the underlying fabric of existence is pure consciousness. Buddhism shows no divergence from this philosophy. I don't understand how you can think science and Buddhism are incompatible.
@14sJakeB190 What you call 'soul/spirit' and 'science' are merely concepts of your thinking mind. From the point of view of Reality itself, there is no such distinction, as the nature of Reality is seamless and singular. 'soul/spirit' and 'science' only exist as products of thought. Stop the thinking and see the One, rather than form divisive concepts about it.
@GuitarMannnnnn But is sanity not just a part of definition in society? Nobody is insane according to Buddhist lore, no? People just have different ways of looking at our Universe, internally. Therefore are we all sane, or does sanity even matter?
We as Buddhist's shouldn't be trying to change people's minds, if they want to learn our ways, let them, but don't force it on them or tell them they're wrong for not having the same beliefs.
@DeathByTarantula That is a keen observation. I know exactly what you mean and I agree. I just find it's funny that Buddhist philosophy represents the world more accurately than most other religions.
@DeathByTarantula Watts used to say "civilization or society is a departure from the sanity of nature." So, in that sense, Buddhism tends to align itself with the universe with a a clear reflection of it within the mind. I think, in that sense, it is sane.
