  • I have this bass I love all the nobs cranked (: Good bass

  • BREAK THE G FORCE

  • Did you mod that bass in any way?

  • @phatcurtis - Hey. This bass is mod free in every way. Think I've replaced a machine head at some point but that's about it!

  • man, are you a star music? because you speak like a star, cammon men cammon...

  • Man - you are a funk MACHINE! Got your Stu Zender down to a T, with impeccable timing, and a great tone. Not surprised to read that you're keeping busy. Work has a way of finding bass players, especially ones as competent as you. Thanks for sharing. Groove on brother!

  • @BlimpyBoy - Cheers buddy, glad you liked 'em... Seems so long ago now I did these videos!

I like the stuff you've put up. You checked out Sol Philcox? He does some serious chicken pickin'

  • @jejgalvin Thanks. I've only been exploring country & bluegrass guitar for a couple of years now - and it looks as though it will easily consume what's left of my life. In a good way. Checked out Sol. Little bugger can pick! Also saw some of your more recent vids - really dig your affinity for Squiers (pun intended)! What do you call the group from the Chameleon video?

  • @BlimpyBoy - haha here here, our passions will stay with us til the end! Yeah Sol is cool, he made the move to Nashiville recently which is pretty inspiring, I'd love to get across the pond or atleast to London! The Squires are great, I'm playing an 80's model at the mo and their build quality at the time rivals that of a Fender today!

The group in the Chameleon is called Freshly Squeezed. I was just filling their bass players shoes for the night.

    Do you play Bass yourself?

  • @jejgalvin The jazz-bass was my main instrument for close to 7 years, and I still sit in regularly. I'm doing the music-school thing later this year, and I didn't want to enrol on bass. That role is in such high demand that it's easy to find yourself so busy with other people's projects that you're not really doing your own thing. I still maintain my calluses though :)

  • good stuff here. i ought top get some vids on here. zender was where i started too. have you gotten into wooten, jaco pastorius, jeff berlin and pallandino, mark king and of course jamerson. headhunters god make me funky. hope this doesnt sound patronising. its not. you got flare your playing.

  • what would be great is for someone to get the squarepusher liunes on here. check out ez boogie by squarepusher for great bass . some of the synth sounds are quite deceptive and the double tracked clean bass works well.

  • that was the most epic string change ever!

  • Dude ur awsome , r u in a band? Im 16 play guitar/bass and live near plymouth (thats not an offer im just saying :L)

  • @blackjeans182 - Yo thankyou. I'm involved with a handful of projects at all times. I'm actually 20 now (this video is a little old)

    How about you?

  • @jejgalvin yeah i realised that after I wrote it :L still at scl and yeah same as you really but never really in anything long term

  • I dont really like your sound but your playing is pretty cool....

    Nice job man!

  • oh yeah, nice playing mate. After 20+ years of playing, I'm constantly told that there just aren't enough of us around. Keep it up

  • This bass is never leaving my side... My dad has a Warwick Streamer, Alembic, Status, Lakland... You name it. Nothing sounds better in my hands tho to me

  • Ha! I'm a bass player from Plymouth, Michigan in the United States. I'm looking at buying one of those Squier Precision Standard 5-string basses. How do you like it?

  • @bassist4dalord those are not in the production any more, witch is a shame because they are really nice instruments! I've got one for my self a few years back and I still have it because it has that specific sound that I can't get with any other bass. I own a Warwick Streamer 5- string, and a Fender Jazz Bass 4-string, but that Squier will always be something special for me! :-D

  • You play really well. I wish the people I knew could play as well.

  • I love it ..young man you've got taste and talent to match.

  • hey im a guitar and piano player and ive been wanting to start playing bass

what would you recommend for a beginner..thank you!

  • @willdill i know that you asked him, but i'm a bass player for 10 years now, and for a begginer like you i would recomend Squier basses any day. I've started with that bass (the exact one that he is playing) and i still have it now, would not sell it for any price beacuse it is a great instrument, and they are not beeing produced any more. So Squier bass it is!!! :-D

  • @TheKille22 hey thanks for the reply..the guy wrote that on my channel..that i should get a squier..i will look for one thanks guys!!

  • i own the exact same bass, it is awsome.... thumbs up for the playing

  • que buen audio bien crugiente. ideal para el estilo funk. como lo conectaste directo ala placa de audio? ¿que bajo es? buenisimo salu2 de argentina.

  • awesome!! I wanna play bass now :)

  • i wish so much they still made that bass

  • @frobert911 well one actually went on EBAY exactly the same as mine (even the colour) for about £100... That's probably your best chance at getting one, or used ur best place to getting one, that or used guitar stores

  • thumbs up!!!!

  • man..you are a big!

  • great :)

I can't stop watching your vid!

does the sound come from speakers? (if yes, could you tell me what speakers you use, because that sounds awesome).

    thanks ;)

  • Yo :)

Erm i'm pretty much going straight into the computer...No manipulation of the sound what so over, no amp, no editing the audio afterwords, my Bass just naturally sounds like that!

Sorry to actually be no help to you there! Aha...Thanks for checking the video though ;)

  • Mate this is awesome. You're doing Zender proud. I especially like the vibrato, and despite the comment below I think the fierce attack that you have on the D and G strings is great as it adds a really nice dynamic, and you do it in the right places. Just don't so it so hard you break strings every week - that could get expensive! But seriously man, awesome job. Also I've got a Canned Heat cover up on mine - feel free to take a look, but no worries if not! Keep it grooving man! -Rob

  • Impeccable timing and very nice feel! Effortless-looking technique as well.

My only complaint is your attack: it doesn't need to be that strong all the time. Sometimes you want to sound smooth and steady and remain in the background, and not have the notes on your higher strings constantly jabbing through the mix.

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

  • Thanks a lot...I put most of my time into "feel" ...I say that...But more, that's what I think about most! (I don't actually practice all that much now really)

And yeah i've been told that about the attack thing a lot, especially by my dad...He hounds me for it! I guess I just get carried away...Some of the first bass lines i learnt were Flea lines (Chilli Peppers) so that's where the digging in comes from I guess!

  • Well, it all depends on how serious you want to be about it. You've obviously mastered the lines and most of the technique, but dynamics are an essential part of music. If you want to keep on taking your playing to the next level, you've got to keep developing your musical sensibilities.

Keep listening to yourself, be critical and you'll definitely get there! Cheers!

  • I couldn't agree with you more, I know it's one of my weak things...I mean, it's only when I go into a studio and hear it back that i'm like..."Oh...Shite! Better tone it down a little..." But I mean it works to my advantage at times and it's kind of my style, it can be sorted in the studio for recording...I recommend checking out "Afterthought" on my Myspace page (link at the top of my vid description)...I dig in a lot on that but it comes out so nice and it's one of the best lines i've played!

  • Sorry another thing, i've noticed the advantage of using compressors!! Zender digs in A LOT (he says so in the recent bass player interview) but because he uses so much compression I guess that helps?!? Maybe it's something I should look into?

  • Compression and other tools can be very useful, but they should never be a crutch. ;)

I checked out your myspace tunes and I am honestly blown away, almost to the point of feeling a bit silly criticising you in the first place! Your part on Afterthought was really mature and interesting, but really the whole track as well as the band are great. I´ll definitely keep an eye out for future releases!

  • You're a really Good Bass Player!, Great Timing , Feeling You've Got Skills! Slaping and Popping i Love it!,

You should also make vid's with the bass with Lee Ritenour - Rio funk or Something of Marcus miller (Run for cover)

    Kinds Regards From Matthijs

  • Wow, some of you UK guys have amazing 'funkability'. Thinking back to an older group I saw live a long time ago 'Shreikback' I can think of a few parallels. Also the 'Brand New Heavies' spring to mind. Nice work indeed Jake!

  • I have twice your age and half your skill, does it mean you have 4 times my talent? :D

    You rock, man, congrats!

  • Good job!

    Look my videos too..thanks!

  • Hey Jake, what model bass trainer did you use for these videos? I might finally be able to make some bass videos myself now :)

I hope that one day I will go to a concert, though belonging to the six great with the bass go on like this and you're a splinter! ! you're the only one that until now I have seen on youtube that makes the songs of Jamiroquai same! congratulation!

  • Excellent playing but the highlight for me was the ironing board for changing strings. Pure genius. I've been struggling all these years restringing on a table or across my knees. Now I have the answer. Keep up the good work

  • Top shelf. I subscribed. 18? You bastard!

  • Nice playing man. I like the part "Let's change it!" :-D funny... anyway, keep it up!

  • seriously great playing man. Keep it up, don't even think twice.

  • You have some serious licks, youngblood. Funny about poppin' that G-String. I broke a b string one time. slappin' the hell outta it.Learn your modes so you won't let that nasty G string mess up your flow. Is that an american model or mexican jazz?

  • shit! you got a nice groove man.. liked it a lot

  • lol at the string change, nice

  • you did a really great job! i love it, keep it up! I think I'm gonna start bass too (I'm a guitarist)

  • that was the bollox m8... thanks for sharing with us..

    I'm just left wanting more!

  • nice cool

  • The track is actually called "If I Like It, I Do It" but that's just being nit-picky for the sake of it. :)

  • The Terminator part was awesome, man!

  • you got the feel, definitely..unlike some of these youtube folks, just half-assing it. great work on 'music of the mind.'

now i gotta get a camera so i can show you how i groove it.

  • Thanks a lot man...trouble was i actually learnt music of the mind just before i recorded it, it was the same for Didgin out (last track on the album)...I dunno why i never learnt those b-lines! But yeah i actually had loadsa trouble with it...Zender is doing some wickid stuff that sounded simpler than it was to play!! But yeah...time to work on my fingers methinks...

  • Nice one Jake! And breaking a G man! ahaha

    Killin'playing mate, as usual.

IMHO you can still work a bit on the last song, timing wise. Looking forward to the other videos!
