is it okay to use wood chips? thats all i have around the house and i dont want to buy anything unless he needs it :) oh and i think hes about to molt. i just got him for christmas... so i need MAJOR HELP!!!!!!
@hermitcrabcare549: Thanks! They are both molting right now. It's been about a month since they've come up. I get worried sometimes, but then I see the thermometer going up and down in humidity/temperature. So I am assuming they are alive, just doing their thing ;). Right?
Hi, I am a new hermit crab owner. I have two crabs and I believe they both are molting right now, but I want to be sure. One (Ophelia) went under about 3 days ago and hasn't come up. The other (Theo) went under the same day, but I saw him late last night sitting in a corner and moving around a bit, 10 minutes later he started digging and is under right now too. I have extra shells out, food and water available to them and have a heating pad underneath the tank. Does this sound normal? Thanks!!!
@1987DPW um well actully if you just got them than yes. this is because at the pet store they barly have like an inch of subrtate. it isnt deep enough so when they go into a tank with MORE substate they will either dig for fun or be molting. good luck! =D

I've been busy with work and I just now noticed his whole body laying outside the shell. I thought he was dead but he has a new body. I guess he just molted, but I don't know how to help him now. Should I isolate him from other crabs still? And do I need to keep food and water around even though he can't move at all?
