I love Stevie Ray. I love Dan Fogelberg. I love Kenny Wayne. I love Sonny Landreth. I love Robert Randolph. The list goes on, and on, and on to infinity. I just wish I had 1/100th the talent these musicians have/had. And as "crewmannumber6" so well put it...I can love chocolate and strawberry ice cream...HELL all ice cream is good! More than enough room for everybody..the blues doe not discrimate.
It never fails to amaze me how people have to quantify guitarists to determine who is the "BEST" and he's not as good as him. This guy is a phenomenal artist and I love listening to him. That doesn't make me love Clapton or Kenny Wayne Shepherd any less. Can't I like chocolate AND strawberry ice cream?
@Crewmannumber6 Sure, but can't we discuss which one is better? If people like to compare who are you to say that that isn't right? Let us rate and compare, because we enjoy it, and in doing so we better realize why we like guitarist A and dislike guitarist B.
back in the 70's i thought johhny winter+of course duane were thee best slide...then i got turned on to sonny at the pgh.blues fest..DANG ain't NOBODY ever blew me away like that...then comes this kid derek trucks...who just might be the best EVER!!!
@howst3 I used to go see Derek at a joint in Knoxville when he was smaller than the guitar he played. Bunch of frat boys made a snide comment but once he hit those strings they shut their pie holes!! Music is in his genes, DNA!!
I've had the great pleasure to see Sonny live and it was an amazing show- he's a very nice, unassuming guy too. I can't really say who I think is the best, but there's no doubt that I would put Sonny in the top 10 slide guitarists of all time. (I'm maybe, what, 382469?)
He's like the Igor Stravinsky of slide guitar!!Sonny's sound is uniquely advanced by 100 years..so eerie and haunting, sends shivers up your spine. When he's interviewed he sounds so unassuming & sincere. You can't compare Clapton's style with Landreth because Eric is very basic, Elmore James-like infact, in comparison. Derek Trucks & Warren Haynes come close but are still mile away. Sonny is possibly the best slide player that has ever lived.
I have to disagree... I have very much respect for Sonny, but c'mon Derek Trucks blows Sonny out of the water, so does jerry douglas, and david lindley
I do agree with you in most part. It's all a personal matter of opinion. Derek Trucks is totally brilliant and shares a similar sense of humility like Sonny. Dobro players like J. Douglas are in a class of their own. David Lindley is very much like Derek in that he's influenced by world music. For me though, Landreth has a darker, disturbing sound at times. Voodoo like. Maybe it's because of his psychic abilities.
he sounds dark because hes from lafayette louisiana my hometown i saw him at festival international its cool because my mom used to walk to school with this guy
assassin32393; That's amazing info! Best wishes to you and your mom. I was lucky to've seen Hendrix live and i have to say Landreth is just as unique, in his own way. Most guitarists, including Clapton, could never scratch the surface of what Sonny is doing. Such a real modest guy as well.
I have seen Douglas and Trucks live multiple times but have never seen Sonny live. Even with crappy sound and video, it is obvious Sonny is making a unique contribution to the genre even though Lindley probably has the most recognizable sound of the top slide players. At the level these guys are playing, trying to label one as better than the other is meaningless.
True, it was a bit ignorant of me to discard Sonny; in comparison to the others. let's face it these guys are all in a league of there own, and nobody comes close... with the exception of Hillary Duff... excuse me
andydunnigan; I absolutely love Derek Truck's playing and his knowledgable approach to music. Both Trucks & Landreth have taken slide guitar into another zone. Both are also among the most modest and likable with no ego and no sense of competition. They operate on a higher consciousness level. Sonny plays intricate phrases that i've never heard anyone do. (Trucks also)
I think he's some kind of crazed weird Gypsy faggot, bent on destructing the fabric of our fair society. If I have anything to do with it, he'll be thrown to the pigs! Go back to Lousiana you sociopath!
That boy is the devil!!! Sonny is playing the slide all wrong! AND all right too!!! You can,t play behind the slide too! That is hot!! Would like to have seen him jam with Danny Gatton. He's also the devil!!
I love his playing cause it's so "musical" and he doesn't demonstrate technical ability for its own sake - there's heart and soul in it. Though I do like slide players like Ry Cooder or David Lindley (and of course Derek Trucks) as well I think Sonny's style is absolutely unique - you hear a couple of notes and you just know it's him.
Best slide guitarist of all time. Even ERIC CLAPTON himself said that "Sonny is 5X better than me..." What does that tell you about this guy's talent?!?!

He's definitely more melodic that some of the other slide players. I'd like to see him and Derek Trucks battle it out!
