@SlowhandSolos (Ah great, I tried to remove one of my doubleposts and they both disappeared. Wtf, youtube?)
I think it's just because Dream Theater are the 'newer' band(even if they have been around for 2 1/2 decades). I don't believe Rainbow could ever be fully pushed aside, and the fact that people are still paying tribute to their work proves this.
@triAceFanboy sir, may I point out the fact that you are a total faggot and nobody will like you ever if you continue 'trolling' like this
I pitty you because you can't feel the magic of mr. Labries beautiful voice and the fact that you can't see how this version of the is a great alternative for the original.
I wish people would lay off James, in this song he does a good job with the vocals! He can rub you the wrong way now and then but this is good. This cover is way better in the drum department and also in terms of production it's better than Dio. I wish they hadn't messed with King Crimson's Larks Tongues in Aspic on that CD, It sounds too heavy and just weird.
fantastic job, there are very few bands out there that could cover a classic like stargazer. this one is also technically brilliant, but it does lack the magic of the original.

You all are making a contest out of someone paying their respects. get a life you fucking morons. and Thank you Dream Theater great job!! R.I P. Ronnie! and Richie Blackmore you are still and always will be THE RAINBOW IN THE DARK
you guys need to keep in mind that this is post vocal chord rupture James LaBrie singing. To hear him at his prime, listen to anything from Images and Word to A Change of Seasons.
James' voice has recovered since the '95 accident but annoyingly he still refuses to use his old operatic vocal style on recent Dream Theater studio material.
It is definitely different. And I agree, nothing can ever approach the mystical, magical, and absolutely epic original with Rainbow and the almighty Ronnie James Dio. With that said, I don't dislike this at all. I don't think that other bands could have pulled this off as well as Dream Theater did.
Dang, LaBrie should sing like this more often. I think his vocals on this track were better than any of the proper DT songs on Black Clouds. Nice cover, but of course, can't top Dio :D
Good cover surely... but... RonnieJ's voice is still echoing on this song from the great beyond. Cant totally think of another voice on these notes.. \m/ Hell yah RJD! miss you!!
Think a few people are missing what DT was/is. They made sure they had their own solid catalogue, but also recognized there are lifetimes of great music in the past and why not play some of them also. "The song transcends the player." If it is a real piece, others will be able to capture it. If Rainbow's version is best, it's cuz they heard it first, but props to DT for seeing quality, and having the chops/balls to grab the song and "wring that neck"....
Sorry nothing beats the original, why is the singer trying to imitate Dio? He should sing with his own natural voice & the guitarist ruined that solo.
Petrucci never messes up he only improves and this one he played it the way solo in this song should've been played.DT brought balls and kept soul of a song.
@MrQleraja No. Petrucci is a great guitarist, but he's no Ritchie Blackmore. Blackmore played the solo how it should be played, but it was fine for Petrucci to improvise a bit, I just think the original better.
Good cover but Rainbows original version with Ronnie James Dio is still supreme by far. Ronnie James Dio in my opinion is one of the best if not the best voices in metal ever. Bruce Dickinson is a very close second.
I love all covers of this song...or at least most covers. But the original is just way too good. Ritchie Blackmore is probably the most underrated guitarist of all-time. The best in my opinion and nobody can touch Dio's passion for this song.
you shouldnt compare it with the original..we all know that the original song IS GODLIKE and there is no way someone could play it as good as they did....
Though fairly simple in essence compared to the pieces Dream Theater perform, I definitely think this would be more enjoyable to play to them than any Metallica song simply because it just ROCKS

You're not being original, you're saying the same thing every fan says anytime someone else covers a song they like. It's not the slap in the face so many think it is, it's a show of respect for a pioneering band.
@slightlyoutofreach01 I,m not being original, duh, that,s THE point!!if you,re gonna pay tribute, put your stamp on it and at least "some" emotion, maybe like tool,s version of no quarter, this,to me,is just soulles in my opinion.Ppl like this, then wonderful but i ttotaly misses the point and majesty, emotion of the original song,it,s NOT about the notes,it,s HOW it,s played and performed.Pretty Vacant has 4 chords and raw but i could never play it that way,it,s the feel,do i make sense?,probably not
@doctorpp23 And yet DT sounds NOTHING like Rainbow. If they wanted to be Rainbow 2.0, they would. They have more than enough technical skill to do so. They did this cover because Rainbow is one of their influences. It's out of respect. You have a preconceived bias, so there's no point in comparing the bands. DT aren't trying to copy Rainbow, or any other band. Your comparison would be like me saying " Rainbow could never pull off songs like The Dance of Eternity, so DT is better". Moronic.
@123454321qcat preconceived bias... no you are a psychologist... i posted a comment because of my personal opinion /preference you made it a big deal... i just said classic over virtuoso-play and old over new school...and not tend to a rainbow vs dream theater battle i know there is no point... you misconceived...
@doctorpp23 No, i simply turned it around and said that neither band could successfully be like the other because they are completely different. You then returned by implying that Rainbow would never want to be DT, and I said that DT would never want to be Rainbow. All I'm doing is showing how stupid your arguments are. By the way, DT has been around since the mid 80's. Not really "new school".
@doctorpp23 Ritchie Blackmore will never be a great metal guitarist like John Petrucci. Ritchie will never be a better shredder than John. Ritchie hasn't been invited to G3 unlke John which is six times and most of any invited guest. Blackmore is dope, but he'll never achieve metal, shredding, and most favorite guitarists of all time in my book.
@blackblurable Ritchie and guitarists like him are the cornerstone of the music petrucci and the g3 gang guitarists ever wanted to play i dont say that i dont like petrucci s work or the g3... but in my book i prefer classic for jaw-dropping performance...
@doctorpp23 I prefer the future instead of the past. Believe me I love Blackmmore's work. But Petrucci isn't only a lead guitarist like Ritchie. John writes lyrics and puts songs together. He practically is the band. Ritchie wanted all the attention and thought was the shit. That's why it didn't work in Deep Purple. He wanted to play extended solos and shit and be the band practically. I love Blackmore's bad assness. But he's full of himself. I like humble encouraging guitar players like John
@blackblurable only a lead guitarist??? are you serious??? HE is rainbow!!!!! but i see you got a rally strong point there man.... he is totally full of himself...the humble matter is a big deal to me too...
@blackblurable Blackmore is not a metal guitarist. He's a ROCK guitarist and there's none better. widdly widdly shredding is not Ritchie's thing it never has been. If Blackmore was ever invited to G3, he'll probably laugh in their faces anyway. John Petrucci is an excellent player but a different guitar player to Blackmore entirely. Blackmore doesn't need the ego stroke of G3 as the whole G3 thing is just the equivilent of on stage wanking with a guitar. Blackmore's on a higher plain.
@doctorpp23 They're paying homage, dude. There's no need to be so pissy about it and crap on Dream Theater for merely paying tribute to a band that clearly inspired them. Of course none of them will ever be Rainbow, who ever said they were?
Superb cover. I love both bands and both versions of this song. Glad JP did not replicate original solo but kept many elements of it, he's a genius. Even like LaBrie's vocals.
Of course most covers aren't superior to the original, but in cases like Dream Theater's, this was a good cover. And James Labrie does a good job singing it, as it's not easy singing like Dio.
A decent cover, but to say it again, Rainbow did it better. Could be because I love virtually everything Dio ever did, and a lot of Blackmore's stuff too... But this song just doesn't have the same affect as Rainbow's did. First time I heard 'I see a rainbow rising' it sent huge shivers up my spine; this just doesn't do that.
I appreciate that Dream Theater made this song their with their own style, but compared to the original, this cover kinda takes the magic out of the song :\
@nakedwake It's more technical than Blackmore. Not necessarily better. I think one of the major differences is that Blackmore played to serve the song, rather than to demonstrate the scales he's practiced for the last three years. And you're absolutely right about Labrie. Generic and hollow. Boring as fuck. No soul. Dio, on the other hand was pure spirit.
This is one of the rare times that a cover song bests an original. I love the guitar in this version, though Labrie won't ever have anything on Dio as a singer.
@Redon26 I have no problem improvising with covers however, I do feel that any band who covers a song should at least make an effort to play all of the parts that are in the original before they make an effort to improvise. That's all I'm saying.
@TheWilderMusic Cozy Powell's drumming outmatched mike portnoy's 100 times out of 100. And if it's a cover you shouldn't add parts to the song. Especially a near perfect composition like stargazer. Ritchie Blackmore shouldn't even try to be copied either.
@DwightSchruteXW No if it's a cover you SHOULD add parts because the objective isn't to exactly copy the original. Just like Petrucci didn't "copy" Blackmore, he used his own style of playing. It's a cover. If you like the original better, listen to the original.
@TheWilderMusic even so you should try and actually play all of the parts that are there if your going to cover a song. portnoy missed the four quadruplets in the first chorus. go listen to the original. They're there.
@DwightSchruteXW You're an idiot. They cover shit out of deep respect for the musicians who played it originally, so what the fuck does it matter anyway.
@TheWilderMusic im not saying that they didn't cover this song out of respect. thats the whole purpose of doing a cover in the first place. the only point that i am tying to convey is that dream theater could have done a far better job with this if they could play it right. even though i have absolutely no respect for them at all because they tried to perform Dark Side of the Moon
@DwightSchruteXW I still don't see what you base your opinion on that this is a horrible cover. Because Mike didn't play some quadruplets? Because of the additional solo? After bands have been slightly altering and improvising on their songs in live performances since back in the roots of music? You, by yourself declaring that those things are undoubtedly wrong to do, is what made me say you're acting like the pope of music.
You like improvising on covers? Nice. You don't like it? Then don't.
@Redon26 im not trying to act like the pope of music here and as a matter of fact I do happen to play with a band. go ahead look up YYZ wilmington school of rock. im on drums. if you don't believe me, go over to my facebook page and look me up.
@DwightSchruteXW I looked up that actually, and if I came right it was really good cover (dispite never heard a full Rush song before, sorry for that). But to discuss this cover I have to say that you are very determined opinion as to music should be. If I would be you would not get anyoed over small things (like this cover) and instead just enjoy that you are given a version, a new point of view, of this song.
This singer fucking sucks. I just listened to their cover of To Tame a Land as well. Both were awful. This guy needs his vocal chords removed so he will stop inflicting this shit on us.
@ThorXMK Sorry, but no. James LaBrie is a seasoned vocalist with huge respect and cred in the music scene. Just because you don't like him, it doesn't mean he's crap.
"This guy needs his vocal chords removed so he will stop inflicting this shit on us."
No, you need to quit being a whiny child. Nobody's 'INFLICTING' shit on you. It's music. Listen to it or don't. If you dislike the vocals, GO LISTEN TO SOMETHING ELSE.
There are poser's like this all around...we need to kick such ppl out so that they stop inflicting their shitty opinion's on places where they wud get pawned! :D
@DwightSchruteXW hmm the guitar solo kinda beats it out, the keyboard/continuum solo was added, the vocals were absolutely amazing, and the drumming speaks for itself. What was wrong with it tell me.
Kkk dream theater needs to take this style, their current sound ( but with a better mixed bass), make it really proggy, and write in the form of their 90's days like ACOS
@DARKLORDSATAN That's not true! This cover have a lower tune than the original, 'cause Labrie have a very limited vocal range. Even Adrian Barilari do a better work on this song! (Sorry for the bad english)
@DARKLORDSATAN If they use a lower tune for this song, he obviously can't sing that notes in the original tune. Everyone knows that he lost his voice for several years, and it's unfair to say he is "The best singer we have right now" 'cause we have Todd La Torre, Michele Luppi, Roberto Tiranti, Wild Steel, and a lot of singers with amazing vocal ranges with betters skills than Labrie (Sorry for the bad english)

Superb cover. I love both bands and both versions of this song. Glad JP did not replicate original solo but kept many elements of it, he's a genius. Even like LaBrie's vocals.
TheBrilliantDog 5 months ago
Of course most covers aren't superior to the original, but in cases like Dream Theater's, this was a good cover. And James Labrie does a good job singing it, as it's not easy singing like Dio.
CommElite 5 months ago
You just don't cover a Ronnie James Dio sung song .
This is the proof .

Even the high tech sound can't beat the original
karpos1975 5 months ago
A decent cover, but to say it again, Rainbow did it better. Could be because I love virtually everything Dio ever did, and a lot of Blackmore's stuff too... But this song just doesn't have the same affect as Rainbow's did. First time I heard 'I see a rainbow rising' it sent huge shivers up my spine; this just doesn't do that.

actually DT play it 1 note lower than the original

I appreciate that Dream Theater made this song their with their own style, but compared to the original, this cover kinda takes the magic out of the song :\

decent cover, but nowhere near as good as the original. I mean james is a good singer, but he doesnt even come close to dio.

the guitar playing on this is way better than Blackmore, but JL has nothing on RJD.
nakedwake 6 months ago
@nakedwake It's more technical than Blackmore. Not necessarily better. I think one of the major differences is that Blackmore played to serve the song, rather than to demonstrate the scales he's practiced for the last three years. And you're absolutely right about Labrie. Generic and hollow. Boring as fuck. No soul. Dio, on the other hand was pure spirit.
IshadaKatzteilov 6 months ago
This is one of the rare times that a cover song bests an original. I love the guitar in this version, though Labrie won't ever have anything on Dio as a singer.

Good version; love DT and Labree, but hope his fans have never listen the original; including, they've lowered 1 step because you know... Dio is DIo.

I have no idea why you guys are hating on this cover. Dream theater did a really great job on this one and james's singing is FREAKING EPIC.

DwightSchruteXW 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW No if it's a cover you SHOULD add parts because the objective isn't to exactly copy the original. Just like Petrucci didn't "copy" Blackmore, he used his own style of playing. It's a cover. If you like the original better, listen to the original.
TheWilderMusic 10 months ago
@TheWilderMusic even so you should try and actually play all of the parts that are there if your going to cover a song. portnoy missed the four quadruplets in the first chorus. go listen to the original. They're there.
DwightSchruteXW 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW You're an idiot. They cover shit out of deep respect for the musicians who played it originally, so what the fuck does it matter anyway.
TheWilderMusic 10 months ago
@TheWilderMusic im not saying that they didn't cover this song out of respect. thats the whole purpose of doing a cover in the first place. the only point that i am tying to convey is that dream theater could have done a far better job with this if they could play it right. even though i have absolutely no respect for them at all because they tried to perform Dark Side of the Moon
DwightSchruteXW 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW I still don't see what you base your opinion on that this is a horrible cover. Because Mike didn't play some quadruplets? Because of the additional solo? After bands have been slightly altering and improvising on their songs in live performances since back in the roots of music? You, by yourself declaring that those things are undoubtedly wrong to do, is what made me say you're acting like the pope of music.
You like improvising on covers? Nice. You don't like it? Then don't.
Redon26 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW I strongly assume you don't even have an idea what it's like to play with a band, so why do you act like the pope of music here?
Redon26 10 months ago
@Redon26 im not trying to act like the pope of music here and as a matter of fact I do happen to play with a band. go ahead look up YYZ wilmington school of rock. im on drums. if you don't believe me, go over to my facebook page and look me up.
DwightSchruteXW 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW I looked up that actually, and if I came right it was really good cover (dispite never heard a full Rush song before, sorry for that). But to discuss this cover I have to say that you are very determined opinion as to music should be. If I would be you would not get anyoed over small things (like this cover) and instead just enjoy that you are given a version, a new point of view, of this song.
musicmonkeyboard 10 months ago
This singer fucking sucks. I just listened to their cover of To Tame a Land as well. Both were awful. This guy needs his vocal chords removed so he will stop inflicting this shit on us.
ThorXMK 10 months ago
@ThorXMK The term "Don't feed the Trolls" is directly toward you. -.- That was a horrible insult.
TheWilderMusic 10 months ago
@ThorXMK Sorry, but no. James LaBrie is a seasoned vocalist with huge respect and cred in the music scene. Just because you don't like him, it doesn't mean he's crap.
"This guy needs his vocal chords removed so he will stop inflicting this shit on us."
No, you need to quit being a whiny child. Nobody's 'INFLICTING' shit on you. It's music. Listen to it or don't. If you dislike the vocals, GO LISTEN TO SOMETHING ELSE.

@TheWilderMusic how so? I understand that covers aren't supposed to sound like the original but still... This is the best that they can do?
DwightSchruteXW 10 months ago
@DwightSchruteXW hmm the guitar solo kinda beats it out, the keyboard/continuum solo was added, the vocals were absolutely amazing, and the drumming speaks for itself. What was wrong with it tell me.

@DARKLORDSATAN Thumbs up for ya. LaBrie nails this song. Hard.
darkmaster98k 1 year ago
@DARKLORDSATAN That's not true! This cover have a lower tune than the original, 'cause Labrie have a very limited vocal range. Even Adrian Barilari do a better work on this song! (Sorry for the bad english)
orfeomichael 9 months ago
@orfeomichael By limited you obviously mean Unlimited. James LaBrie has an amazingly agile voice so to speak. Very, Very wide Vocal Range.
DARKLORDSATAN 9 months ago 2
@DARKLORDSATAN If they use a lower tune for this song, he obviously can't sing that notes in the original tune. Everyone knows that he lost his voice for several years, and it's unfair to say he is "The best singer we have right now" 'cause we have Todd La Torre, Michele Luppi, Roberto Tiranti, Wild Steel, and a lot of singers with amazing vocal ranges with betters skills than Labrie (Sorry for the bad english)
orfeomichael 9 months ago
@orfeomichael Oh im not saying he's the best singer we have right now. King Diamond is obviously the best singer we have right now.
