did you know that roys side B can spike? you have to be on the floor though or else it doesnt work, but on the third upward version of his side B, if you time it right, you can spike people. its very circumstantial though, and usually edgehogging is more effective, but if your bored with many lives against an in-experienced player....its really fun. ^_^
@BTMS09 If an enemy is hit by the center of Roy's blade its an instant knockback, as opposed to Marth's sword which causes the most damage at the tip of his blade.

Wasn't that fast... Fox used Left+B and hit Roy, making Roy flinch and stop his attack animations. Then that Roy took advantage of that and used a Fsmash to send the Fox the other way.
Marth is more of a keep away game, making him harder to approach. Since Marth's sword encourages tip hits, people find it harder to get near him. Roy on the other hand is more close range, leaving him more susceptible to attacks. Also, the lack of a good spike makes him less of a threat.

technically, an easier way to spike is to do the B-forward combo, using the third slash from the up series. That move, no matter where you seem to hit them, always spikes. If you can catch them at the edge, spike em that way :D. Useful, but not as flashy.
Whats is the exact point that the enemy must be in the air so roy can do the meteor smash?? I find it so hard to do......is easier to do it with the Up-combo
lol young link has something similar on how you have to hit them BUT the enemy has to be above you. go try young link in training mode just throw and enemy up, do down A in the air and when the character touches young link's head head, that character will fall SOOOOO fast its funny. also the go on fire :)
uhhhh, i have to strongly disagree with some of what you said... marth is strong, just harder to make him strong because his sweet spot is the tip not the middle of the sword. but i do agree that roy can be better than marth though.
Not so much about how you use the characters as their killing/gimping power. Roy will never be better than marth regardless how much you want him to be.
lol wow... thats very vague... neo beats a LOT of pro marths, which means that its not all about the character, because if it was, smash would be the most rigged game, but its not.
you're both wrong...Marth is faster AND stronger than Roy overall. On top of that, having his sweetspot at the end of his blade makes it easier to get strong hits safely.
hm? he only has one more jump frame, a shorter sh and faster falling speed, yes? i think he combos faster than marth....not as efficiently, mind you, but my point still stands.
Wrong... Very wrong. Roy isn't MUCH slower but Marth ISNT much weaker. Roy also has the Grapple+DOWN then Cstick behind you. I main Marth because he has slightly more range and he's much faster at attack execution. It dosn't matter if you do +4-5 damage per cstick if I can hit you 6 times before you do it.
Roy IS a lot better for shffling though, but the lack of effective range on his sword really bites. The truth is, Roy's sword does have longer reach, but the tip of it hits so weakly that it doesn't really matter if he hits with you at that range.
there are a couple frames at the edge of his sword that don't factor into his attacks, resulting in the "roy zone", which is just a fancy name for super phantom hits
well, good DI can mess up your down-throw smash combo, and actually Roy's attacks hit about 1-2 frames BEFORE marth's attacks, but his lag time AFTER is about double of Marth's lag.....
Not from what I've seen. Marth stretches further into the smash while the TIP of his sword is his sweet spot resulting in more range. And from Smashwiki calculations it seems that Roys recovery and execution are slower.
umm...ok? i said that the edge of roy's sword doesn't hit, so of course marth has more range...and while roy's recovery is slower, there is frame data somewhere that says his attacks hit faster....but it's so miniscule it doesn't really matter.
The whole point of Roy is to be slower but more power. But I've never seen him have more power... Except, his Counter is much better than marths and his Up Smash is better. But Marths Up tilt is much better than Roys... Weird differences.
except that Marth's moves have more knockback and due to roy's fastfaller qualities, he is able to combo more quickly, making him faster. his counter does hit for 1.5 damage and increased knockback, while marth can counter for a longer time. and actually, Marth's upsmash hit for more damage, whilst roy's can actually spike the opponent. yep, weird differences
Well, in all honesty....by tier list, Roy isn't good. He does kinda suck, but I love Roy so I use him anyway. *shrugs* It's all how YOU use him. Roy is an even matchup with Fox so a match can go either way with them. Use him 'cuz you like him. I can beat Marths with my Roy, and he's steadily getting better. He may not be higher Tier, but he CAN be good.
tiers are just based on how many idiots follow the leaders in tournaments. if tiers were based how how much actual potencial a character had, roy would definitly be up there, but because of ken an kizzu and whoever else, everyone uses marth instead =[

I remember years ago, when i started playing this game i got roy, and i was a complete newb, and i thought he was the best b/c he had the fire up b, and he was strong. As i got better i saw he limitations, and started thinking he sucks. This video made roy legit to me again, good post.
one thing i like ab out roy is that he is harder to use... and thank you tenarchbishops for admitting it so kindly that roy is really good if u have skill.. i like this guy cuz he pins a lot.. he uses the sowrdmens advantage.. and i love when he owns the up b charing falco in mid air.. lol that guy got pwned.......
I've always liked Roy, even as a pretty dedicated Marthist. Roy takes a lot of skill to play, and he's really a challenge to use in a match. I'd even go so far to say that Roy's got better combos than Marth when it comes down to it.

roys down spike is alot harder to do because you have to be right under the other guy. Marth you just have to be on top of them :/

you're both wrong...Marth is faster AND stronger than Roy overall. On top of that, having his sweetspot at the end of his blade makes it easier to get strong hits safely.

Wrong... Very wrong. Roy isn't MUCH slower but Marth ISNT much weaker. Roy also has the Grapple+DOWN then Cstick behind you. I main Marth because he has slightly more range and he's much faster at attack execution. It dosn't matter if you do +4-5 damage per cstick if I can hit you 6 times before you do it.

Roy IS a lot better for shffling though, but the lack of effective range on his sword really bites. The truth is, Roy's sword does have longer reach, but the tip of it hits so weakly that it doesn't really matter if he hits with you at that range.

there are a couple frames at the edge of his sword that don't factor into his attacks, resulting in the "roy zone", which is just a fancy name for super phantom hits

well, good DI can mess up your down-throw smash combo, and actually Roy's attacks hit about 1-2 frames BEFORE marth's attacks, but his lag time AFTER is about double of Marth's lag.....

Not from what I've seen. Marth stretches further into the smash while the TIP of his sword is his sweet spot resulting in more range. And from Smashwiki calculations it seems that Roys recovery and execution are slower.

umm...ok? i said that the edge of roy's sword doesn't hit, so of course marth has more range...and while roy's recovery is slower, there is frame data somewhere that says his attacks hit faster....but it's so miniscule it doesn't really matter.

The whole point of Roy is to be slower but more power. But I've never seen him have more power... Except, his Counter is much better than marths and his Up Smash is better. But Marths Up tilt is much better than Roys... Weird differences.

except that Marth's moves have more knockback and due to roy's fastfaller qualities, he is able to combo more quickly, making him faster. his counter does hit for 1.5 damage and increased knockback, while marth can counter for a longer time. and actually, Marth's upsmash hit for more damage, whilst roy's can actually spike the opponent. yep, weird differences

Well, in all honesty....by tier list, Roy isn't good. He does kinda suck, but I love Roy so I use him anyway. *shrugs* It's all how YOU use him. Roy is an even matchup with Fox so a match can go either way with them. Use him 'cuz you like him. I can beat Marths with my Roy, and he's steadily getting better. He may not be higher Tier, but he CAN be good.

tiers are just based on how many idiots follow the leaders in tournaments. if tiers were based how how much actual potencial a character had, roy would definitly be up there, but because of ken an kizzu and whoever else, everyone uses marth instead =[

I remember years ago, when i started playing this game i got roy, and i was a complete newb, and i thought he was the best b/c he had the fire up b, and he was strong. As i got better i saw he limitations, and started thinking he sucks. This video made roy legit to me again, good post.

I've always liked Roy, even as a pretty dedicated Marthist. Roy takes a lot of skill to play, and he's really a challenge to use in a match. I'd even go so far to say that Roy's got better combos than Marth when it comes down to it.
