i was trying to win with a similar strategy but I get hit when cartwheeling sometimes. This wouldn't be a problem except for some reason half of his attacks instant kill me even with once more and second chance so i will just lose out of the blue. Any tips for that?

Try looking up a video with Terra vs VLS. That should show you how to avoid each of his attacks without constant cartwheeling. Once you know that, it should get easier.
