This is a proud and wise tradition - people shouldn't be discouraging it.

Ceremonies of womanhood initiation are proud and wise traditions, but the genital excision is a violation of bodily integrity --amputating the female organ of pleasure --and has caused much suffering and countless deaths. See the video Girl's Rite of Passage for an example of a ceremony that respects women's power. This is the core of the African traditions too but many have since added excision along with codes of virginity and sexual double standards.

I disagree; to me, removing the clitoris makes the female body more perfect, by taking away a vestigial male part and making her sexuality wholly female. In place of the quasi-male orgasm comes the deeper pleasure of penetration.

As for women's power, I believe women's position in society should be submissive, and circumcision helps reinforce that. Likewise I think promoting female purity is a good thing.
