This national anthem was not for 9/11, not for nazi's but was a mere reflection of how great and grande America was / is. Worldwide immigration for people who want to make a new living, start a new life, have a new opportunity. Awesome song! Gets me fired up for not being an American :)
I grew up watching this movie and fell in love with Neil Diamond because of it. I would crawl to wherever I had to to see him in concert. He is my absolute favorite singer ever.
when i was a little kid i remember seein this movie with my step dad dad and he later died and i had completely forgoten the movie and just came across this its the only time i remember him clealy
@loreintuition Of course. I has been a while (almost 15 years) since I have seen the movie and I could not remember off the top of my head who played Cantor Rabinovitch or Molly Bell. Thank you.
THIS FUCKING SONG BY THIS ARTIST SAYS IT ALL IF YOU ARE BORN AMERICAN FEEL FORTUNATE--IF YOUR COMING TO AMERICA THEN FEEL PRIVILEGED--AND YOU ARE WELCOME.
My bride of 46 years, born in a Nazi work camp, would tell you that this song is what iti is... welcome! It is what it is. Does she like what's happening now? No. Do I? No. I'm Jewish. Remember the ship where all were killed trying for freedom only to be turned back to die? Today? Please spare me the politicians "lines" and those who "deserve" to be here. It is an HONOR to be here. There shoudl never -ever be a short-cut. Too many people have died.
Well crafted tune. Saw Neil D. in ILL-amazing! The Uplifting Spirit of this song is illustrated in the fact that, here in 2011, "freedom's light" is now "burning warm" in more & more former dictatorships. I look forward to the day when it's no longer necessary to board boats & planes to achieve prosperity because it will COVER THE entire EARTH. And, the seeds were, largely, planted here; another reason to be very proud of American values. Peace & Love to ALL.
9 people are watching this video on the short bus... trying not to slip on their own drool. Maybe the straps on their helmets are too tight... Maybe they are tone-deaf. Maybe their lobotomy didn't work out... how can you possibly dislike this lol I'm a heavy rock/metal/punk rock guy mostly, but nothing but respect for Neil Diamond. Great song. Great performer. Great post.
I saw him in concert when I was 12 years old. When he performed this song cannons went off every time he yelled "TODAY" I was in awe of that performance and was instantly a fan, which made my parents very happy.
Great song! I was stationed in Turkey in the mid 80's, it was a remote(unaccompanied assignment). When the plane landed in Istanbul the pilot switched on some music. This sng was playing..kind of a bittersweet memory since I was going to be sepaated from my wife and children for over ayear. Fortunately, at that time there wasn't too much shooting, just a lot of terrorist activity (Achille Lauro, Navy Diver killed, hijackings)..
I can't believe there can be 6 people that dislikes this song, it's a classic. The way he sings it, you can't beat it. A long time ago I saw a version I think it was outside, and alot of people on stage with him waving flags, it was a real spetacle, I can't seem to find that version of it, but that one was GREAT. He is "the man"
Terrific song, wow how exciting to rediscover it 30 years after I first heard it. He has a great voice. But I can never imagine Neil Diamond passing as a "rock concert" style performer!
Just listened to this through my concrete speakers - absolutely AMAZING sound......and what a song......Thumps up for me every time - just gives me goosebumps all over......
I thought that Neil Diamond's acting in the movie was poor, but his singing was tremendous. This is my favorite Neil Diamond song, and it's my favorite version of it.
At a young age in the early 1980's this song and the movie The jazz singer made me a Neil Diamond fan. I'm now 36 and over the years I have taken some crap from friends or i'll get a funny look from them if i same im a fan. But it's funny that once they listen the great songwriting and voice changes some peoples attitudes my wife became a fan, went to a concert and even had a Neil song in our wedding.Thank You for posting the video it brings back alot a memories.
I love this song to death! I am going to see Neil in concert at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester, England on June 2011, cannot wait - I hope he sings this!

WOW I soooo love Neil Diamond is king, I did not know this film had been made, its not yet been released on DVD in the UK yet, does anyone know when it will be? !
This is one of those movies that I like watching on a warm summer day...Neil gave a good performance, being his first movie and all and, of course, Laurence Olivier was absolutely brilliant, as usual.
i am 59 now, my whole family saw him in concert in 1984 and he completed the concert with this song and a Star Of David was formed by lazers. it was the best concert that i had ever attended and that includes the Broadway shows and the symphonies and other "rock' artists. Neil is the GREATEST!!!!
It has been said that this was the worst thing he and laurence oliver did, bollocks it is one of the best remakes ever made went to see it and as you say bought the record,t shirt, video, dvd,cd, if meeting his father and as he walks away being called yassel not only your eyes but mamas smile MY SON!! does not fill you up then yes you are almost dead cause it does it to me everytime

@Dawn10538 There is no way to watch this, if you have seen the movie, without a tear coming to the eye. Daughter and sons grew up with the music and Jazz Singer, and to this day, daughter goes to concerts with me when he is in NYC

@nikonboy07 I agree for the most part. Oz isn't perfect, but nowhere is. You forgot to say unemployment is nearly half of what it is in the US. However, I lost my job because my employer went bankrupt. There's no unemployment help which has caused my family serious financial problems.
But generally, I prefer it here. The America I left in 97 was MUCH better than now, after Bush killed it. Obama's trying.

i remember watching a concert of Neil diamond with my grandmother and she says just loud enough for everyone in the room to here "the things i would do to that man."
I have always Loved this song it was well written and a very good singer at that I will always Cherish this well Written Song & Movie with all my Heart to all Americans I Love America Today & Always Normajean
this song is very respectful to people in america and our freedom its not the national anethem but somewhat a parody of the anethem i love it i sing along side with neil diamond in the car to all of his songs
Was this on a special occasion at a private club or something? The audience seems pretty well-heeled for Neil Diamond. Like a Hannukah concert or something?
@MsLogjam this is actually recorded from teh movie the jazz singer they filmed the section where he sings America and the movie you need to see i have grown up around neil diamond and love his voice and songs what will i do when he passes?
my mum had the movie when were kids and we watched it every week, dancing round the living room!!! This guy's voice is out of this world and even as he got older he never lost it.
Anybody who hates immigrants needs to listen to this song. Cant blame immigrants who want to come here. Only place in the world were your race, sex, or religion doesn't matter.
This national anthem was not for 9/11, not for nazi's but was a mere reflection of how great and grande America was / is. Worldwide immigration for people who want to make a new living, start a new life, have a new opportunity. Awesome song! Gets me fired up for not being an American :)

Yes, the movie is 'of its time', but I would argue that the basic premise will never change.
Whatever the circumstance, we will forever want want to improve our circumstance.
I am particularly drawn to the opening 10:00 seconds, the blending of the strings and the fingers enthrall me, draw me, rivet me.
It is a visual and audible banquet of the senses.

This is one of those rare cases where you have a soundtrack that is as good as the film it accompanies. I love this film so much!

Was this on a special occasion at a private club or something? The audience seems pretty well-heeled for Neil Diamond. Like a Hannukah concert or something?

Anybody who hates immigrants needs to listen to this song. Cant blame immigrants who want to come here. Only place in the world were your race, sex, or religion doesn't matter.

immigration is great... as long as it's done legally.

@LordGyphon Sadly, you're wrong. Discrimination based on race, sex, and religion is still alive and well in the USA.
