I have a western hognose and he's the tamest hognose viper you will ever meet. Never bitten or even striked apart from at feeding or got annoied at a feed and refused. Lovely little guy, this species is beautiful too.
This is one of the most tame snakes. They amazing! I remember playing with them as a kid on the farm in Pennsylvania. I love when they play dead. But very happy to see they where cautious with the snake.
You guys are acting like they are harming the snake. Granted they could have just picked it up but if they didn't know what type it was and it looked intimidating to pick up, its not their fault. They did nothing to deserve death threats. I love snakes and I would be pissed too if I thought they were harming the snake but they aren't.
MichiganHerpes, it's not correct to say that we don't have "cobras" in the US. Although they are not native in the US, they can definitely be found to due to ignorant and negligent snake owners that either let them get loose or release them into the wild deliberately. Of course they can't survive cold temps, but it's not totally impossible for one to stumble upon a cobra...
i have had a bunch of hognoses in my life, right now i have a western hognose, and i have an eastern.easterns have the big hoods, looks like a cobra, westerns flattens their heads into the "viper diamond" and shake their tails to imitate a rattlesnake more than spread a hood (even thought they have a little one). I dont know why it says hognoses cant invemate you, that is not true at all. they very very rarely bite in defense, though they fiegn bite alot, they can b food aggresive though.
I can't help wanting to play with them when I come across one, which I did yesterday. I knew about the puffing, hissing, and playing dead (including the part about them rolling back over to remind you they were dead) but I didn't know, until yesterday, that they will poop on themselves and vomit. He vonited an entire frog! It was a moment I will cherish even though I feel horribly guilty.
I am no snake expert, but I do know that regurgitating its food is because he was scared. When they "regurge", it takes a huge toll on their system, and in some cases, can kil them..I do not think regurgitating its food was/is a common technique for deterrence.
To clarify: Hognose snaked DO NOT bite. They are completely harmless to humans and eat toads and small frogs. They are a rear fanged venomus snake but the CAN NOT invenimate you and theyre venom has no affect on warm blooded animals. They will flare out theyre necks, strike out, vomit, or crap on you if you picke one up. As a last resort they roll over and play dead. The funny thing is if you flip them over theyl roll on theyre backs again. If you see one please dont kill it! They are harmless!!
@RedDemonSRT4 Funny, if I handle mice, other snakes, the cat, before I pick up my hog she will MOST DEFINITELY bite. Harmless, yes, but they can and will bite anything that might smell a little like food.
Thanks for saying this..I ahve seen them bite first hand..Ask its last meal, they'd agree that this snake does indeed bite! IF, like ThKiwi says, you handle a frog/mouse before messing with him, then you have that scent, and the snake could become confused..I've seen it happen..
I've also heard that if you pet any other animal, you might stand the same risks..(pet a dog, etc..before handling snake)
@HillBillyF100 yes as all snakes they rely strongly on scent so you're right in that sense but they perfectly harmless yo anything they can't fit in their mouths
@RedDemonSRT4 you forgot that they some times act like rattle snakes they wiggle there take and make a hissing rattle to make it seem like there a rattle snake then they play dead if that does not work as a last resort ^_^
