If you're on like a Coast Guard ship or something with a specific waypoint than you don't really have much of a choice.

You go up the wave OK at tremendous speed then take off and fly! Landing in the following trough without falling off is the difficult bit! Makes me laugh when I see articles about Man Overboard Drills in sailing magazines. Why did we do it? Well after using all that petrol to get to the seaside why not have a go?

The deep-V hull is obviously very impressive. However as an ex-offshore commercial captain who's also piloted power catamarans, the cat is in my opinion a medium-size-seas vessel and a pounding jack-hammer effect slams between the hulls when the bow crashes down and then can scoop water. Whenever possible I'd opt for a deep-V with screw-power never jet-drive. Amazing demo-vids, thanks wildcat!

Those are pilot boats used to ferry pilots who know the way to steer large boats safely into a a specific port or harbor, especially in bad conditions. These guys have experience and familiarity of that harbor or coastal area and know the channels and potential hazards. If a ship is coming in to the port it will anchor offshore and the pilot boats will bring an experienced pilot out to the ship, he climbs aboard and takes over steering the ship. It's a bit like valet parking on a giant scale.
