If deserted on an island with capability to play music cd's, Desolation Boulevard would be a pick for any of 5 cd's allowed. This entire album is absolutely fantastic! Long live Sweet!
In `68 I was 3 and busy gettin shocked by the power meters on the side of the house, thought they were gas pumps for my Hot Wheels. One of my cousins turned me onto Desolation Blvd when I was 10 along with Hair of The Dog. I don`t really understand any of their early shite but this still kicks ass. Lots of 80`s metal bands ripped these guys off. This is still badass stuff.
@macocwbyz72 Yeah-I agree with you- I don't think many of my fellow Brits realise the Sweet could achieve something like "DB"- they tend to judge them by the singles, which, and i have to agree, were a little shrill sounding, esp. on the choruses.(compare "Fox on the Run" for instance,single-yuk!-and L.P.version-on the choruses).Maybe the group felt pressured into "Glamming it up".
Sheer magic. Sweet are the band I thank for getting me into rock music.....that song is as cool and fresh today as the day it was released.....Great vocal harmonies that Queen, shall we say clearly 'knew of'' when they began.....RIP Mick and Brian.
All I wanted in 1974 was a Raleigh Chopper and I never got one. Like Brian says, 'you know, you know it ain't easy'. Hard times, tough lessons, But the Sweet - superb band.
Fantastic song. Shame they didn't go on to do more like this. Love the restrained little guitar fills Andy puts in, that's what makes this song for me.
@bigmatt1724 Yep, one of my favs too!! There's a good clip here on youtube of them doing it live which showcases their harmonies brilliantly!! Long live the Sweet!!!
My friends and I would cut class and head over to the student parking lot to snort crushed cross tops and drink cheap wine, beer or the occasional vodka we'd steal from our parents. We'd listen to this song on the 8-track player that used to come equipped in a '68 Ford Mustang this redneck named Todd used to have. The Sweet was the pinnacle of cool back in those days. The dorky kids listened to Zeppelin, the Stones, the Who and the Beatles. We had the Sweet, Slade, the Bay City Rollers and Kiss.
Hah! TOTALLY, man! I hear ya! "Dazed and Confused" (the movie - 1993) I LIVED IT. lol One of my fave Sweet tracks of all time! : ) The mid 70's RULED!!
I miss the mid 70s. That was the brief shining moment in the sun. No AIDS or even Herpes back in those days. It was just a great time to be alive. The part of "Dazed" that made me laugh the most (because it was so true) was when they sent the kid to get beer. It was 18+ in those days and they never asked for ID. You could have been buying for your parents, after all. It wasn't until a bunch of bored housewives in the 1980s that things changed. Great comment, man!
this is awesome!! i grew up with the sweet and saved up my pocket money to buy their singles (couldn't afford lp's!) and have my nose pressed up against the tv if they were on top of the pops. . . . happy days!! thanks for sharing.
I just love Andy's voice in the background of this song (and many others). Many talk of Mick, Steve, and Brian, but little seems to be said about Andy.
I would say the reason is, many consider Andy to be behind Brian's immense insecurity as a singer - and indirectly I suppose, at fault for Brian hitting the bottle, leading ultimately to his death.
There's no denying though, that Andy Scott is an absolute genius on the guitar, all of his riffs, melodies and solos are fantastic and of course he was responsible for many of the band's biggest self penned hits!
Long may they be remembered - without all 4 members, Sweet wouldn't have be so SWEET!
Great stuff! - they were actually quite "heavy" - listen to some of their B sides!! - they were suppressed by the record company...
