The top shroud or cloak is made from a bed sheet (Full size). I used black, tho you really could use any color material. For the material underneath I used a 'onesie' style dress that I found at Walmart, therefore saving me from having to buy separate upper and lower garments to go under the cloak. The real trick with making material into waterproof 'stone' is the use of at least 2 coats of Monster Mud and 3 coats of Drylok, grey color. Let each coat dry completely!
@gaytorcop The framework consists of one 3 or 4 inch wide PVC pipe that goes from the base into the top of the mannequin head. There is also two, 2 inch wide PVC pipes that go from the base into underneath the mannequins arms for added support. Surrounding the 3 pipes is about 6 ft. of extra large brown craft paper, that acts as a filler instead of annoying chicken wire. Even after the dress was soaked in Monster Mud, it laid very naturally on top of the paper.. no need for extra stuffing.
Great statue. You have inspired me to make one! In fact my form is finished and just waiting for monstermud/drylok etc. Let me ask you a couple of questions.
1. How well is it holding up? Did you leave it out in the weather/rain?
2. Is it as solid as it looks?
3. What did you use to apply the monstermud and drylok?
4. Is there anything you would have done differently that I can learn from before I cover this thing?
The statue was outside exposed to the elements for all of last October. It held up extremely well in my opinion. The key is at least 3 coats of Drylok and it will remain watertight.
She is quite solid & HEAVY, there is some 'give' in certain spots. I dunked both upper and lower garments in Monster Mud. The Drylok was put on with paintbrushes. Only thing diff i would have done is chose a diff mannequin face, not too crazy bout a solemn statue with huge lips!
Color me super impressed! Your design is beautiful and haunting. Oh, her dress drapes so smoothly! An outstanding job. Hard to believe this was your first time with mm and Drylok. You are a PRO! Plus, the challenge of making her upright... That's a challenge but has paid off in spades. She's so spooky that way! - Terra
Thank you Terra! I'm so glad u like my work. Yes this was my first time, i've been wanting to attempt a staute for years now, but always thought it was too complex. I really surprised myself. The last coat of Drylok went on today and soon she'll be ready to tea stain and detail. Lookin forward to getting a vid of the finished product up! ..Love that stained glass witch tombstone you have on your forum! Have a great day!
Do you have a video explaining how to actually make her?

does putting drylock on it make it heavy or is it light
SIMPLEPLANROCKS22 6 months ago
@SIMPLEPLANROCKS22
The combination of Drylok plus Monster Mud (drywall compound and black paint) and being 7ft. tall makes this statue VERY heavy to lift.
