I built a free to use Push Up App at Push Up King Dot Com . The routines range from Regular to Push Up King: 1000 Push ups (Easy, Medium, Hard). I can personally do 20 sets of 50 Push ups of Push Up King Medium.
Military pushups work your triceps more than normal. You do this by keeping your elbows in. (They are harder because most of us dont have very strong triceps.)
I do wide stance pushups, with my hands a fair bit wider than shoulder width, and hands slightly forward as my elbows make an awful gristle-crunchy sound if I bring my arms in and back in a standard push up stance.
Is there any particular advantage to doing them in traditional style or is it ok to rely variations such as wide, incline etc instead?
@skramamme Variations on the standard pushup form can be beneficial. Depending on arm placement - wide, narrow, or in-between - the primary emphasis can be placed on different muscle groups (chest, shoulders, or arms). The best way just depends on what part of your torso you wish to work the hardest, or, as in your case, the way that minimizes joint stress.

really ur elbows should go straight back along side ur back and not out to the side so when they bend they shoud point towards your feet thats how we did it in 4 Para :D
half your max and do them everyday taking weekends off, for example if u can do 10 do 3 sets of 5. worked for me i got from 20 to 70 in around 5 weeks
@tyleiz2007 do small amounts very slowly at first then u will eventually get better... the main thing is to do some everyday.. im at the point where i do about 80 with 4 sets of 20.. it doesnt take long to get good at push ups
@tyleiz2007 Raw practice. Just like any other exercise. repetition until failure, everyday that you can. If you can only do 5, do that all the time. When you can do 6, do it all the time. I'm talking 10-15 tries a day. Most people say you should do small sets for stability. I say go hardcore...works for me.
Everything is alright, except that you have to look in front of you, not the ground. Way easier to breath when you look in front of you instead trust me.
Your form looks great. But military pushups require your shoulders to "break the plane" below your elbows. This is difficult to do if you are looking down at the ground. Lift your head up high and look ahead. It flatens your shoulders out and makes "breaking the plane" easier. Infantry Traing Brigade- Ft Benning, GA. 4th Infantry Division- Ft Carson, CO.
@blackbone330 you'll be able to do more in that time period, but a good way to get triceps quickly is to do that pushup with your hands together to form a triangle pattern on the ground. What i do is go from inclined triangle pushup to normal inclined push up and then drop down to normal height (I.E your feet arnt on top of something any more) and start the triangle pushup and then the final pushup is the normal pushup. then you have the tricep endurance to try for chest mass =D ryt back if lost
@blackbone330 honestly don't worry about it, every1 starts off on a bad arm, but you will get there eventually, and definately in that time period, just start up high with the diamond, then normal high, then normal diamond, then normal pushup, or start with diamond flat, you may only get a few but thats when you jump to normal ground push-up or dips, it's how you build muscle, not argueing =D Try it 3 times a week, plus if you have no dumbells, lift a heavy flower pot and hold it still for bicep

You only have to breath normal like you always do... breathing like that is just stupid because you cant keep good form also it will take more energy to do so. And you're hands are in the wrong position, you can do some serious damage to your wrists in that position, It should either be on your fist with two pillows or you can use pushup stands. @PLjaysmith I thought the same thing. But, It doesn't matter how big you are. You don't have to be huge to lift a lot of weight. He's probably extremely fit and well rounded in the gym and on the track.
What is the difference between normal (slow) push ups and military push ups? Better try other pushup variations like triangle pushups and wide pushups.

You're head is supposed to be up so you can stare into the eyes of your IC. So they can see the pain in your eyes after the 1500th pushup of the day. That's how we do it in Para, and I'm only doing Para in Army Cadets.

Arms should be shoulder width apart, back straight. When bending, arms should brush the sides. Head should be facing UP to allow better airflow. Chest goes closest to the ground (about a fist away from the ground), not your forehead. How hard is it... >_>
@gggeeh On the way down, you always want to be slow and controlled.
On the way up, its up to you. Depends what type of strength you wanna build. Slow is more normal, but fast can help build explosive power (good for martial arts, bboying etc.)
There are two things that differentiates a regular push up from military push up. Unlike the regular push ups, military push ups involved looking forward not down towards the ground and going beyond the 90 degree plane.

@PigeonToedShawdy yes protein shakes work you should have alot of protein and carbohydrates 30min or less after your done with your workout you dont gain as much muscle if you dont

Doing it one second up and one second down would build up elastic resistance so surely it'd be better to go down, wait a few seconds then go up.

Arms should be shoulder width apart, back straight. When bending, arms should brush the sides. Head should be facing UP to allow better airflow. Chest goes closest to the ground (about a fist away from the ground), not your forehead. How hard is it... >_>

@gggeeh On the way down, you always want to be slow and controlled.
On the way up, its up to you. Depends what type of strength you wanna build. Slow is more normal, but fast can help build explosive power (good for martial arts, bboying etc.)

There are two things that differentiates a regular push up from military push up. Unlike the regular push ups, military push ups involved looking forward not down towards the ground and going beyond the 90 degree plane.
