My family had dobies the whole time I was growing up. We all had them. Great family dogs, one was used double-dut to protect a family business and as a pet, and she required NO training there. Both well liked and well respected! However, poor breeding has led to some undesirable traits like timidity and nervousness, fear-aggressiveness, etc. It's thankful they've fallen out of the popularity they had in the 70's/80's. Probably a lot easier to find both a breeder and a pup that are high quality.
why do you want him to stop playing with water? most of dobis love it:) you don't have to train him to be a guard dog because his instinct tell him to take care of his terretory. all other things you want him to train do it with much love and patience - then you can be sure he will be the best friend of you.
Dobermans are amazingly friendly and extrordinarily smart. Too smart! I have a Yugoslavian male. They are definately not over protective. Its bad bloodlines and idiot owners that make bad dogs. Mainly bad owners.
A doberman was bred as a personal protection dog and the breed standard calls for a dog that is not overly agressive towards strangers but one that is aloof from them. And it should only react aggressively when it feels its master is threatened.
2 dogs that are made to protect men from men.

how do dobermans act to other people? is it overly protective because you hear a lot about dobermans not necessarily good things

my experiance - they are very gently and cute - only their owners can make mistakes with their education - like with any other breed - I love them!
