  • You should write a book

  • Is it just me or did MrEdge9898 copy xDwolfonwizard101 to get likes?

  • What is that liquid like substance which spreads out from the solder onto the board as you solder? Is that one of the things in the solder or is that colour deterioration on the board due to heat?

  • @MrSkinnyBill Solder flux. It helps the solder to flow onto a surface. You can get it in pen form (which is apparently a good way to go, I don't do SMD,) or in a bottle. There is a special compound you use to clean it off, or I think you can just wipe it off.

  • you look like a paedophile...

  • I forgot to ask where can I find proto boards from SOT-23 transistors?

  • From learning this video I can now use that protoboard to make a SMD version of the VLF converter circuit if I can find 4 pin oscillator chips in SMD size.

  • Tips:

    - do like others have said and "tack solder" the component first. Reheat the solder joint and adjust if needed.

    - use a little flux at each joint. Clean up with alcohol.

    - apply heat the to BOTH surfaces - the trace and the component.

    - use WAY less solder.

I would have tacked soldered one leg of the 555, applied flux to the remaining legs, put a SMALL amount of solder on my iron, and heated each surface of the joints. The solder will flow off the tip perfectly to weld the components.

  • Is that Elton John' slittle brother?

  • ˙˙˙ʇɔǝظoɹd ǝuızɐbɐɯǝʞɐɯ ɐ buıop ɯ,ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ

  • Is it just me or does he always seem kinda high....

  • You don't need the putty, anyway, if you pretin one of the pins, and place the part while the tin is still molten. This way, the IC is held nicely in place.

But yeah, as tubewinkle said, it's a pretty crappy solder job in general, no offence.

  • You don't need the putty, anyway, if you pretin one of the pins, and place the part while the tin is still molten. This way, the IC is held nicely in place.

  • What is the capacitance of the putty?

  • This is a good demonstration of how NOT to solder.

The putty is a good idea, but your use of solder and iron are quite wrong.

You're heating the solder much, and heating the PC trace hardly at all. Every joint is defective.

  • whats the chance in melting those 0403's with an iron :O.

  • @Listn2CKY Solder iron isn't hot enough to melt resistors.

  • SUBSCRIBED.

  • for easy solder those devices use flux then clean with alcohol 99%

  • I never had understand why people said you couldn't solder smd sized chips.

But replacing or measure components will be a pain i think...

  • my electronic to-do list:

    1) get a soldering iron

    2) learn PCB etching

    3) learn surface-mount soldering

    4) start a business specializing in surface-mount circuit board production!!!

  • should have connected a resistor and a capacitor to the 555b timer to adjust the frequency

  • very good! never thought about using putty before, it should also act like a bit of a heat sink to protect the components when initially soldering, great idea.

  • @makemagazine is the stuff to your left at 1:01 circuit board stuff ?

  • that akward moment when the top comments are the same...

  • Colin, please make your own channel and more videos ! Thumbs up !!!!!!

  • I would like to make a suggestion: Instead of blue-tack, before placing a component, apply solder to only 1 pad of any device (regardless of how many pins it has). Place the component in place, and re-heat the same pad which already has solder on it. It will keep the component in place while soldering the remaining pins.

  • Surface-mount, the bane of hobbyists everywhere.

  • Agent Smith?

  • Epic macro camera :D

  • lol this video was posted on my birthday in 2010 (:

  • Pause on :46 seconds and it is a epic face! iPods freeze on some parts it gives you epic faces

  • welcome to the land of disposable electronics... :(

  • ... and at 7:00 everybody's teeth start hurting.

  • 焊接的技術要加強阿~~

  • Probably should have applied flux to the pads before soldering *anything*. ;)

The water-soluble flux pens are terrific, btw. Clothing pins (the kind with a spring) can be used for holding larger parts in place, but pre-tinning the pads - at least the corner pads for an IC - woks well, too; all you need to do is then place the IC, then hold the soldering iron tip on the corner pins long enough for them to seat into the solder. They act like 'tack welds', letting you solder the remaining pins.

  • @SigEpBlue i was going to say the same thing lol, would have also been a good idea if the guy removed the flux with some isopropanol so the flux dose not damage the board over time

  • will you sell iy?

  • bit excessive with the so'L'der. :)

  • @benfro89 not true stupid. I'm reporting u

  • OMG, CUT YOUR NAILS!!!

  • THIS IS COOL

  • i made an fm receiver using smd fm ic chip and it works great :)

  • im sry but is this guy aware tht smd also stands 4 suck my... it made me lol. jk Collin ur awsome :D

  • when soldering smd components it's better to put some solder first on one connection before putting the component on the pcb.

  • Nice soldering technique for principiants, but.... the final look was very ugly. Is better use just the heat for glue the components instead of that white thing.

  • S.M.D. = Suck My Diafram

  • The amount of solder is bigger than those SMD componentes!

Also, a friend tried to solder a SMD, and the component just melted onto the iron tip.

  • PVA wood glue is better than blutac!

Use liquid flux and work fast.

  • SMD Test? LOOOOOOOOOOOL

  • Great video Collin! Gave me the courage to try modifying a tiny power supply board, although most of the resistors I will be replacing are 0603's..... Wish me luck!

  • at 6:57 until 7:07 it sounds like a dentist drill

  • @MrEdge9898 D:

  • @7sevenELFeleven yep i will after I move yeah I'm moving and my patents don't want me to buy another one till after we move.

  • @ 5:22 that looks like a terrible solder joint! Also, there is no need for that putty stuff! there are plenty youtube vids on how to solder SMD properly without it! Tack and reflow etc etc.

  • @martyfriedman666 he's just ingenius

  • I miss soldering it was so relaxing to me and calmed mr down when I was uptight. To bad my mother fucking soldering iron broke ;-( I haven't soldered in about 5 months

  • @TheBlacksabbathfan9 buy a new one?

  • Okay, you don't need a surface mount board for surface mount things, I use the through hole plating and it works fine.

  • is it just me or at 6:57 did the thing sound like a dentist drilling into ur teeth o.o

  • Yay Collin! Welcome to the 21st century!

  • awesomesause. I love circuit skills

  • thats actually really cool.

  • I hate making trought hole components boards at home... because, drilling the holes sux

  • Can I replace a smd component with a through hole component?

  • @MrEugenalicious no, beacuse the hole is missing... :D

  • @legolord14

It hurts but you will proably survive that.

  • SMD - suck my d**k :D

  • Comment removed

  • @legolord14 i hope this helps.... im not collin but it seems he hasnt answered.... yes soldering irons hurt... they are extremely hot and do hurt if they touch your skin... i have been burned many times.... obviously i never learned...lol. but yes they hurt.... just wear heat resistant gloves and be very careful (: hope this helps....

  • Neat.

  • Amazing solder skills!

  • You should make the music STFU when your talking :P

  • I loled so hard when he said SMD

  • @legolord14 It should be unlikely that you will burn yourself. I have burnt myself with a soldering iron and hot solder, flux, and a hot joint, which is often painful.

  • SMD = Suck My Dick

  • @XBENSTARX XDD

  • @legolord14

Hell Yeah, but it passes very quickly

  • hey what soldering iron do you use, it looked purty small and im intrested in doing the same thing?

  • Dreadfull soldering technique! You've never heard of pre wetting a joint with flux?

  • the schematic? please

  • @DigiDavidex2 In the video dumbass

  • @XBENSTARX at 3:52 sorry XD

  • this video had 70986 views when i was watching another video then after 12minutes when i clicked on the link it now had 71119 views. wow what a success

  • @legolord14

    no

just when these oil from solder land on your hand but there is not any scarps

  • i made something just like this but its through hole and it doesn't use a 555 timer

  • @legolord14 Hurt ? No. Hot ? Not quite if you hold the soldering iron and solder correctly.

  • The soldering process would have looked better, and not so solder heavy, if this fella had pre-fluxed the solder points on the board and components with a very thin (that means fresh, and not gloopy) layer of solder flux, prior to soldering the components.

His solder tip looks a bit cool to me.

  • @legolord14 Not to scare you buddy, but it hurts a FUCKING LOT!!!!

  • @XxxGamer5641xxX Um.. no

I've been soldering for a few years now and by the sound of it, you are a wuss

I'm only young and I've been burned and I've just kept soldering

  • @Mrdogdigger Well, what I meant was, you get quite shocked when, out of all the sudden, you get burnt. It may not hurt a lot, but you don't expect it at all!

  • @legolord14 it doesnt hurt that bad unless you hold it on there for a long time

  • If you want to solder but are scared, dont worry. Its just like using a stove or toaster oven. When you be careful and are responsible, you will be ok. Ive been soldering a long time and never touched my skin directly with the iron, but sometimes parts you are holding can get really hot. Make sure you buy a good seperate stand for your iron and not those tiny flimsy stands that sometimes come with them. Get a good stand with those big spring looking things. Also dont start with SMD..its too tiny

  • @legolord14 YES it does, but when you work with it more it happens less....

  • Does Collin have his own YouTube channel? If so, link please?

  • soldering does not hurt but it can if your not careful

  • @legolord14

I have been soldering for about a year now... I promise it doesn't hurt too bad... after the first time you burn urself you learn pretty quick a better way to hold it

  • @legolord14 as long as you are smart there is very litle danger ive souldered for 3 or 4 years and olny burnt my self once when i elboed my iorn on a small work bench good luck

  • @kyCap222 I think he was kidding. I've also been soldering since I was a wee little boy (around 7 or 8) and have only burnt myself a few times. embarrassingly enough, most of those have been in the past year, probably due to my new soldering station having enough power to get heatsinks close to tip temperature.

As long as you're not an witless idiot (or like pain) avoiding solder burns is easy ;P

  • pretty nice kit im trying to learn about circuits any advice

  • @legolord14 well have you ever burnt your hand on a pot? i f you haven't let me explain the fealing. At first its a sudden yet painful experience. Although it gets better over about five to ten minutes.

  • @YoWooDDecks SMD - Steve Meade Designs :D

  • @legolord14 yes

  • @legolord14

    lol

  • @legolord14 It is actually quite hard to burn yourself unless you slip and actually touch it for more than a gentle tap, it doesnt hurt a lot, or very much, you might get a 1st degree burn tho which isnt really bad

  • cute

  • Good Job!!!!!!!!!!1111

  • you can keep 3v butten sal in 3 battrey

  • i cant get smd bored

  • LOL SMD test kit....just think

  • @legolord14 It's not so bad, but it does happen sometimes.

  • @legolord14 yes it hurts. you just to be extra careful

  • @legolord14 I once accidentally stepped on one and left a blister the size of an orange, and another time I leaned on one thinking it was cold (derp).

...But hopefully you have more sense than I do ;)

As long as you keep it in a good stand, you shouldn't get burned easily. (don't let my experiences put you off!)

  • @legolord14 stings but thats about it doesnt leave any marks

  • Go Collin! Awesome videos!

  • What is the solder wick used for?

  • @s0nnyburnett it is use for d-soder

  • @s0nnyburnett removes unwanted solder

  • @legolord14 im a kid and i solder and yes sometimes i accidently burn myself with the soldering iron and yes it does hurt

  • @legolord14 well if you actually touch the tip or drip hot solder on you , it hurts like crazy!!!!!! but as long as you are careful and observant, it should rarely if at all happen.

  • need the values on the schematic :(

  • @legolord14

soldering does hurt, if you touch the iron or the liquid solder with your bare hands. if you are scared, use gloves, if you get frustrated because you can't feel what you are doing like i do, try to train your fine motorskills so you can make shorter movements easier. staying away from solder is another option :P

  • My SMD Therimin made from the Jameco SMD expemertors kit is succesfully complete hehe

  • Yay! 50 collins, one cup!

  • dear collin,

do not use handy tack for holding component in place but use kapton tape.

if you use handy tack you have a chance that your component is elevated from the board and than you have a chance that dirt is going under your component.

  • how does that putty do under the heat? XD

  • @legolord14 it happens very rarely - about as much as accidental cuts w/ an xacto blade

  • @legolord14 you get used to it

  • 1206, 0805, 0603,0402,0201,,,,,,01005 actually the smallest ?

  • @legolord14 like a fucking bastard, but you have to be a complete fucking retard, or very clumsy to do it

  • could you add it to the guitar effect pedal? that would be cool, to put it in the guitar

  • @legolord14

yes it does hurt but if your carefull you will rarely ever/never burn yourself. Dont let this little thing stop you from entering the world of electronics.

  • Pretty badass.

  • @legolord14 800 degrees would give you severed burns, so if you want wear gloves

  • @legolord14 haha had electronics in school for two years (on my third now)

and i did burn my self alot the first year.

yes it hurts and its annoying but keeping the burn under water (as booring as it is) help. its over at evening or next day

  • @legolord14 YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 3:23 if you need some help try it on me :D

i dont hate you i just thought this was a funny moment (look up smd in urban dictionary)

  • freaking good video, thank you so much, look forward to seeing more in the future.

  • @legolord14

lol you're welcome. have fun soldering

  • umm.... ur cell phone is broken. :/

  • @legolord14

I've burned myself eight times in one project. it doesn't leave a mark and your reflexes will cause you to pull away almost instantly. after a second or two you don't even feel it anymore. plus I'm really clumsy so you'll probably be fine. and I don't burn myself anymore so.... go for it

  • I like your vids is there anyway i can just subscribe to your stuff ?

  • Dude, love your music.

  • @legolord14 Dur, dude. It's hot enough to melt solder.

  • I did get the kit mentioned in this video. However the kit does not have the circuit diagram for the project shown in this video. Can you please point me to the circuit diagram?

  • Hey, I was wondering what I should look for when purchasing surface mount components. Are there things to avoid?

  • This is impressive. Good work sir

  • This dude still has the make-stuff spirit. Screw Kipkay, that bastard doing everything but anything useful.

  • use 3 3v coin cells

  • i wouold advise putting flux on the joints and then touching them with a lightly tinned soldering tip

  • solder wick rocks !!!!!!

  • Damn that's tiny!!!!! I need to learn to solder these bitches.

  • your videos are so cool :]

  • SMD actually refers to:

    Schwer Montierbare Dinger

    Diffcult to Mount Things

  • SMD is hard as hell.

  • works great on blind vampires...

  • you got a good solder gun can you tell me where to get one like that because mine isnt neary that good

  • You're not meant to push the solder around to make it go where you want it to go

This is the trademark of not knowing what you are doing

  • what about the flux

  • Sport coat with tie-tye shirt? That is so pre-2K.

  • A cleaner way to solder SMD devices is to tin each pad, then put the SMD down and press each lead down with the soldering iron. This will minimize the amount of solder used (for a cleaner connection) and make it easier to solder, as you only have to apply the soldering iron to each lead, not the soldering iron + the solder.
