There is a story of he director showing the film and put his hands out to clap, he said before he could get his hands together, there was great booing from the audience.
I am huge Chandler fan and a huge Altman fan and I think this is a great film. It captures the spirit of Chandler's Marlowe character better than many of the more slavish adaptations.
There's another, much funnier trailer with bits like the announcer saying "Exotic locales" with Marlow onscreen merely at the local liquor store. I saw this trailer on film when my college film program played both the trailer and then a week later, the movie. Wish somebody would upload this trailer! I don't think its on any of the DVDs, though...

If you like Altman, you'll love this movie.
If you like the Marlowe novels by Chandler, you'll hate this movie.
Therefore, this movie sucks immensely.

I don't think they fucked it up, the book is the book and the film is the film and it's one of Robert Altman's greatest masterpieces.
And Elliott Gould rocks - back then, now and for always.
