It is World Environment Day today. This world we hold so carelessly, and take from without thought, will find a way to recover, but the human race will not.
There are still many singer songwriters out there in this current day. They are overlooked by the music industry at large as the industry mostly wants to cash in on pop culture, safest return of investment.
I grew up listening to the likes of Don McLean, Gordon Lightfoot, etc. And to think that humans have completely changed in one generation is simply showing laziness. You were young when these singers were young and it was easy to find new music. But as we get older we get less curious.
Mr. McLean is One of the better songs writer in our times. Haunting and truly strong in his lyrics as in his music, he is unique in his ways. I agreed with everyone who loves his good works.
i've never come across another artist who's songs are so cleverly crafted, his meaning are so deep, he is visionary, he doesnt write songs he constructs them and builds them so accuratly and with such precision, end result these beautiful songs, thank you Don
Don is one of the greatest song writers of all time songs like orphans of wealth are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago. This song actually inspired the creation of greenpeace (so it does have its bad points!!!!)
to never be able to say to the one person what should have been said....to the hand that will never be held, to the life you might have lived had you tried...
One in eight pupils speaks English as second language
One in eight primary school pupils now speaks English as a second language. There are now 419,000 primary pupils speaking other languages at home, a rise of 42,000 on last year, and 314,950 secondary pupils, an increase of 16,000, representing nearly one in 10. (29.9.06)
oh such moral turpitude. It was nature that made man, therefore nature is responsible for it's own demise. unconscious nature doesn't give a squat what happens to it. It is only man that cares because of a very young development in evolution, called consciousness. nature is not separate from the city. the city is a large human ant pile. it is as much a product of nature as a turtle shell. "biological nature" is red in tooth and claw. it had a beginning and it will have an end.
this ios one of the greatest songs of all time. don mclean is really a prophet. talking of ecology when it was not fashionable then. thanks a lot don... you really touched not only your generation.
this is really the greatest. talking of ecology when it was not fashionable then. don mclean is really a prophet. he is really of the most eloquent souls that has visited our small planet.
well this one " tapestry", because you know in your heart its true.... "Vincent" because the line "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you" because thats true too.... and the third is "those were the days of our lives" by Queen because it was the end of one of the greatest talents in the world and I didn't want it to end. Or maybe I'm just too soft!?!?
He is a true genius, where North America is concerned. Just listen to Bronco Bill's Lament, Orphans of Wealth, "Bushbash", Respectable, The Grave, or Masters of War(Bob Dylan tune), to see the pure wonder of Don's songwriting/singing/guitar playing skills.
I also adore Masters of War, & Dreidel (which was written after the explosion of popularity of American Pie had caused Don's head to start "spinning like a top").
Thanks for posting!I once thought that this was my favorite McLean song, but then I heard The Grave, Respectable, or Everybody Loves Me Baby - and I change my mind (constantly). This tune goes to the heart of what is happening to this paradise we live in(I live in Colima, MX).
The lyrics are weaved into a perfect tapestry. The song is just so wonderful to hear and listen with our ears, but even more beautiful when fully understood because it also touches one's heart and soul.
men like don and cat stevens are sorely missing from the music of my generation. maybe it's mainstream media that supresses these types of artist today, or maybe my generation is incapable of deeper thought and feeling, i can't say. i can say it is a beautiful thing to have the internet, that i may find artist such as these, who through their song and words place a hand on my shoulder and comforts my sore heart saying the world IS wonderful, but all those dirty people.
you're welcome and thank you. music is truly the medicine of the soul, and were it not for a greivous lack of practitioners, the illnesses of our hearts would not want for treatment.
Depends on genre. Rage Against The Machine are pretty heartfelt and extremely clever, but not to everyone's taste (especially people who grew up with mellow folk music)
Even they are hardly "this" generation's spokespeople - I'm 29 and not up with the play with current music so not qualified to say.
@darththc As Ive been told: "I just want to listen to good music and not have to think"... I never enderstood this. Im into death metal, and hard punk, but damn, who could ever listen to music that didnt have feeling? Its art, the whole purpose of art is to envoke deeper thought and emotion, to unearth what is buried. I never understood when people said otherwise
@darththc i believe its a lot of both cases. shame that this music has virtually vanished from us. these songs are superbly written. more than i can say for most modern music
@atfatw If you want a generation to grow up incapable of feelings and deep thoughts I suppose the way to do that is to tell them how wretched and stupid they are . If you're not a part of the solution you are part of the problem .
@atfatw People are not water . A person spirits can be crushed by unkind uncaring callous comments from from a person who clearly only sees the world from their own vantage point . It must be a lonely place where one looks out and is able to label an entire generation of people through insensitive ,unsympathetic , eyes . Cruel indifference has it's own bitter reward in that one usually finds themselves surrounded by the kind of person who is often too willing to agree. Misery loves company .
@darththc I am thankful for these true artists like Mclean, Stevens, Denver , Croce, Chapin and their contemporaries. This calibre of talent is almost extinct in the mainstream today. A lot to be said for someone who can sit on a stool with only a guitar and mesmerize an audience for a hour. Thank God for forums like YouTube that remind of us such great musical genuis's.
@darththc There are still artists out there from this generation attempting to do the same thing (I'm one of them). The media isn't interested anymore, they just want half naked teenage girls prancing around auto-tuned singing about clothes. It's just a money racket now.
@darththc I think the existence of people such as yourself is proof enough that our generation is capable of deeper thought and feeling. I believe that the media machine and technologically advanced past-times of our time have served to distract young and potentially powerful voices from delivering their message as well as to suppress the ones that are trying to speak out.
I am 13 and now at thos time i just thank my dad for raisng me with this music instead of what is in the industry now.

To destroy all we need.

Every thread of creation is held in position
by still other strands of things living.
In an earthly tapestry hung from the skyline
of smouldering cities so gray and so vulgar,
as not to be satisfied with their own negativity
but needing to touch all the living as well.
