Yep. You said it. For those kind of targets, and at those ranges, a .308 would be the ticket, with a .338 Lapua being the biggest cartridge I would think any professional sniper would go for.

However, it doesn't look as cool as a .50 Barrett, does it? That is the only reason that weapon is used in this movie..same reason you see it in video games. Besides,it blows a much bigger hole in people, and that is really, really cool to couch commandos that have never seen a battlefield.

More than anything, the lowest bidder usually gets the contract. Barrett can provide the military with a decent high caliber platform for less cost than other folks, even though some of those other folks make better weapons.

The other major thing is that the M82 is chambered in .50 BMG, on like some other big bore platforms. This means that ammo is widely available for it in a number of different configurations (such as MK 211 and API rounds).That's a big selling point.

Well, in short, one advantage to adopting the M82 is that it uses a type of ammo that is already in wide circulation: the .50 BMG round. Literally millions of rounds of this ammo are already stockpiled in US arsenals for use in the M2 heavy machine gun. So, rather than having to purchase enourmous amounts of new production ammo, M82 sniper teams can simply utilize existing supplies.

Well, certainly many specialized weapons are used by different sniper teams around the world. However, as always, "the missions defines the gear;" the Barrett M82 is largely an anti-material weapon. It's meant to knock out vehicles, parked aircraft, valuable equipment, etc...it may be used on human targets when the opportunity presents, but that's not the role it was designed for. The .50 BMG round ensures a real overkill scenario in such engagements..

The point I'm making here is that a well trained "black ops" sniper wouldn't be likely to choose the Barrett if his primary targets on the mission were human (i.e. camp guards). It is too big, too heavy, too hard to move, and, again, overkill for engaging enemy soldiers. In addition to the weight of the rifle, the ammo is also heavy enough that only a very limited number of rounds could be carried.

A rifle chambered in good old 7.62 NATO would work more than well enough.
