Its about Julian's drawing, but in an interview with Paul McCartney years later, he said that it was a fun one to include. He didn't rule out their use of the drug, and just kept saying that everyone was doing it then.
To those who think this song is about LSD, well it's NOT! The title wasn't even made up by any of The Beatles, it was by John Lennon's son Julian. Julian had a crush on his pre school friend named Lucy, Julian drew a picture of her floating in the sky with stars around her at school and showed it to his father John, Julian said ''It's Lucy, in the sky...with diamonds'' After hearing this, John thought that was a great lyric so he invited Paul afterwards to write the rest of the lyrics.
.................The song itself is somewhat inspired by Alice in Wonderland which is why the lyrics are a little on the ''weird'' side so to say.
The initials LSD in Lucy in the sky with diamonds is just a freaking COINCEDENCE!
The IDIOTS who think this song is about LSD are the same IDIOTS who believe in the ''Paul is Dead'' hoax which is also stupid. You people should get your facts straight.
the songs not about LSD, its actually about a drawing by julian when he was little. when john asked what it was, julian said its Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
1 of all wikipedia sucks never trust it and 2nd yea ur right it is bout the experience they had while on lsd it talks about in the new Beatles collection that recently came out
Not even a painting. it was a crayon drawing of Julian Lennon's classmate, Lucy, against a starry sky. It had the words "Lucy in the sky with diamonds on it. John was so inspired by the drawing that when Paul McCartney came over for a recording session, he was shown the drawing and the two started writing immediately.
acctulally this song is not about LSD...smart people! its about a picture that John's son drew at school and when John asked him what it was he said..."its lucy in the sky with diamonds!" thus came this song. it would be later found out that John's son had a crush on a girl named Lucy. think people!! not all songs are about drugs...sheesh!
Yes, this song is not about LSD, it was Julian's drawing mixed in John's head with some Alice In Wonderland -type imaginery. And John has told openly about other songs of his that actually ARE connected with drugs ("She Said She Said" on Revolver, for example), so why would he have denied it with this one?

Krug1424 is right. Everyone know this song is about LSD.
The Beatles wrote some ok songs but they weren't very good on their instruments and had studio musicians play the hard parts. That's why my band did a new and improved version of their song "Lucy In the Sky". Check out our video and you'll see why most folks say our version is better then the original.
number1covers, I don't agree with that "not very good on their instruments". I'm not a musical expert or anything, but I think at least Macca was (well, still is!) a very talented musician and could play many instruments really well. All of them were at least good enough, and John Paul and George were great songwriters. And they didn't get other musicians do the "hard parts", they got them to play the instruments they couldn't (It's hard to make a string orchestra out of four men, for example..)
Hey jizcreamstudios, I guess you might be right that they could their instruments. At least we can agree with my main point though - that my band is much better at arranging and live performance.
They didn't get others to play the "hard parts." That just sounds quite idiotic. It's kinda hard to sound like an orchestra of at least 7 cellos, violins, and stringed basses with four guys.
I dropped acid when this song came out. Lucy In The Sky brings out great imagery that was prevalent in the psychedelic era. The Beatles always had toungue in cheek humour.
tangerine trees, marmalade skies, girl with kaleidoscope eyes, cellophane flowers of yellow and green towering over your head, rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies, newspaper taxis, plasticine porters with looking glass ties...
that's why i personally believe that this song IS about LSD...
all those are sort of hallucinations, but feel free to believe what you want :)
Didn't you ever draw things like that as a child? I think it is coincidence really and they only noticed after. Maybe they even meant it as both? That's the thing about good music. :3 It's open to interpretation between individuals.
No doubt they took drugs, but now that there is more knowledge about their dangers I'm almost positive they would be against young people (or anyone probably) them. :-)
@TheCureObsessive the beatles said themselve that it wasnt. they said that everytime they tried to write a song while on lsd, it turned out complete shit. so they never did.
hey i wanna make something very clear: this song is not about lsd. it just simply isn't. one of th beatles' nephews was drawing a random picture with a lady in the sky (because he was a toddler and toddlers draw the most random things). So they made a song about it.
I'm not trying to defend them or anything. I know the Beatles took drugs. No duh. I'm just trying to make sure that eveyrone knows the truth and not that stupid myth that's always going around. The little kid was drawing a picture and they asked him what it was of, and he said "its lucy, this girl from school." and she was in the sky with stars. so they made a song about it, but its kinda poetic, dont you think?
Yeah, I heard that story to, Ringo Starr has the picture now. I think Julian's Ma gave it him. To be honest, so much rubbish is said about the 'real' meanings of Beatles songs, that I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure, but I believe the picture story for this one.
actually, it was john's sun, julian. he drew a picture at preschool, and when john asked him what it was,he replied, "it's lucy (one of julian's classmates) in the sky with diamonds."
@TheCureObsessive the song is about johns son Jude making a painting in school and he named it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds so john made a song about the painting!
exactly. they did experiment with LSD, but this song isn't about that. lennon said so himself in an interview. stupid people just made that up so they could have an excuse to correlate drugs into the beatles' songs.

The song was wrote about a julian drawn by Julian Lennon
When he was at school he drew a picture of a girl he liked and he said it was Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
Paul and John then decided to write a song from what they could see on the picture. He had zero to do with LSD,
NeededProof 1 year ago
The song isn't about drugs.
I read that it was inspired by a drawing his son did.
However, it really isn't that big of a deal.
