dizzy replaced frankie newton in april 1937 - i am beginning to think there was some issue for frankie newton to leave the USA- he also had an offer for taking bill coleman's (bill was traveling to india with leon abbey's band) place in willie lewis' band in 1937 - jacques butler got the chair - BTW this is my favourite solo by dizzy - and great ones by dicky wells and the incredibly underrated bob carroll.
My favorite version of this jazz standard. Besides Diz's superlative solo work we also have super solos from t-bone Dickey Wells and the sadly forgotten tenor sax master, Bob Carroll...GREAT RECORD!
Dizzy Gillespie's 1st recorded solo - at the beginning with the intro & solo in the opening bars, 1937. Taking the trumpet chair for his idol, the then-recently departed Roy Eldridge.
