  • wow i love this version its so melodic and heavy at parts

  • The Pixies version is better, the drumming and vocals compliment it better than Weezers. Still two of my favorite bands, unfortunately Weezer is shit now.

  • What I like about this cover is you can actually clearly hear the harmonies and backup vocals, which are some of the best parts of the songs.

  • love this! the sound they have here... they should have maintained this for all their albums

  • gah, damn you, rivers. your voice makes me melt.

  • awesome cover

  • I actually like this one better than the pixies one... I'm probably just as objective as you guys, though, because I love Weezer and I listened to this version before the Pixies own version. I don't think the drums in the Pixies version fit well with the feel.

  • @OlmoLane yeah, probably just as objective as a Mitt Romney election committee intern waxing Hilary Clinton

  • @shelbythomas Oops, I meant to write subjective.

  • More bigger than Goku and Vegetta Fussion. (Espero que se entienda)

  • oh man its cool to see ppl who love this as much as me. the two bands that influenced me to write music.

  • It's okay, but it just doesn't have the right mood to it.

  • @Humble......respect the Weez.....Love My Pixies but this is an awsome cover

  • Mikey Welsh's first recording with the band. RIP.

  • Oh sweet. I got top comment :)

  • This version sucks balls. These guys don't have the talent to cover a Pixies song. Shouldn't fuck with genius anyway.

  • I like both Pixies and Weezer and I just didn't like this cover, at all. Just my opinion.

  • weezer should just be a cover band because this is better than anything they have done lately

  • @ladyitradiator1 *Better than anything they've done in the last 10 years.

  • I think Weezer recognizes that their new stuff sucks. I saw them this summer and they only played 3 post Pinkerton songs.

  • This is my favorite Pixies song, and I love Weezer (especially Blue and Pinkerton), yet somehow this cover doesn't do it for me. Rivers doesn't sound committed enough to it in his singing, and the way they changed the drums around sounds clunky and off. It could have been so great.

  • @MegaCrasher3000 To explain the cover a bit: The band wasn't back together for too long before this was recorded, as this was after they went on hiatus from Pinkerton and long before The Green Album. Most of the songs recorded during this session were simple jam songs (two of which appear on Death To False Metal) and this cover. And Rivers sounds pretty decent here compared to what he would sound like on The Green Album.

  • Great cover of an even greater original!

  • This is Poo........

  • Its only fitting that Weezer covers this song, as its the reason for their existence as a band.

  • weezer should stop making original music and start being a cover band

  • The verses sound good. The rest is meh in my opinion. Obviously, I prefer the original.

  • When did they record this?

  • Everytime I hear this song pop up on my iPod(Pixies version), I just think to myself.. wow, this is the exact sound of Weezer in this song-Velouria is the sound that defines them.. Now they cover it here.. slower, they give it the Weezer post-2000 treatment.

  • @jayporks I thought the same thing even though this compilation was released in 1998. hahah

  • love it!

  • @blueroomexit what?! you're nuts! overplayed, maybe... overated, definitely not!

  • VELOURIAAAAAAAAAA

  • @jacknuts22

    Idiot

  • @betterthanbooks No seriously... Shit cover. Fuck Weezer.

  • Love both bands, but not keen on this. Too much valium for Rivers, perhaps.

  • well done weezer i no i will listen to this again

  • I agree that pixies are hard to cover but this version sucks imo. The orginal really has a driving feel to it, this feels like none of the band members are on the same page. Oh well. A for effort

  • i love weezer and the pixies w all my heart, but this cover is nothing like the original

  • .......zzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzz

  • Great cover!

  • prefer the pixies in general, but actually like this version more, verses have a cool breezy feel

  • where my mind is not a song bro (fede018)

  • hey look it's the last good song weezer ever recorded.

  • The pixies are so hard to cover. No one can do what they do. But i really like this version. Velouria is actually one of the names Im thinking of for my kid.

  • the pixies are one of the most disasterous bands to cover, any attempt leads to fail :O

  • its good just doesnt have that pixies enrgy to it

  • I Love Weezer.

  • Still a cover spineless however you look at it and however good it is! Stop being so pretentious!

  • Still a cover spineless however you look at it and however good it is!

  • It's more of Weezer's "interpretation" of this song. I hate when people call it a cover. When I think of a cover, I think of it as an exact replication of the song.

  • @Spineroony

    narp.

It's a cover. And if you think it's not a cover, you have a strong misinterpretation of the word "cover."

  • @Spineroony Clearly you have no idea what the word 'cover' refers to in the music world.

  • this is actually decent, can tell they love the original, but let's be honest: Not even close- these are big shoes to fill, let alone walk in.. bossanova was a fiery ball of pure momenum.. u can keep hurley

  • Look, I love Weezer (or. more accurately, Blue and Pinkerton), but this cover is just boring. The band chose to play it safe, and the result is a bland, mediocre cover that doesn't add anything to the original. If anything, it takes away from it. Rivers Cuomo sounds like he's asleep in comparison to Black Francis' electrifying vocal performance on the original, and I don't care for the backing vocals either. I don't expect covers to be better than the original. I do expect them to be enjoyable.

  • @SurferDoolittle567 i refuse to believe to believe weezer released anything after pinkerton

  • @spacecataz0 me too friend me too...sigh

  • @spacecataz0 It is a pleasant illusion, that is a reality in my head.

  • @spacecataz0 members of weezer are too stupid to realize Pinkerton was their best work as they shun it aside

  • @MilleniumKing13 Actually, Brian Bell's favorite Weezer album is Pinkerton, Pat Wilson thinks it was the last time we've heard actual Weezer and Scott Shriner (who didn't even record on the album) loves playing most of the tracks on it.

The only one who hates it is Rivers, who is, unfortunately, the guy who wrote the songs on the album. He's solely why music from it seems under appreciated.

  • @SurferDoolittle567 On the other hand, Weezer's version of Velouria was the first version I heard- before I ever heard of the Pixies. I'll always love Weezer's version best since I fell in love with the song at first listen: clean vocals with Rivers' classic singing style, and awesome guitar arrangement. Pixies version rocks too, but I'l always favor this one.

  • @IamLouder how very sad.

  • @IamLouder How dare you say something stupid like that. Calling my experience SAD? SHUT UP! I WOULD NEVER CALL YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH GOOD MUSIC SAD, NO MATTER HOW DIFFERENT FROM MINE IT IS.

Go enjoy your music, I'll enjoy mine. I was only trying to relay my story of discovery of a great song. KEEP YOUR DAMN NONSENSE WORDS TO YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i don't know, i feel like this version lost a lot of what i love the original for.

  • this is pretty kool, any other band would have butcherd it

  • This is great - not a straight cover, but really sympathetic to the style of the original, thought it was going to be terrible

  • I came in thinking was was going to be terrible, but it's actually pretty good. Of course, without Kim deal there's missing something. But still good.

  • I would have to cover this song weezer style if anything.

  • I like the arrangements in the drums better in this version. I named my kid Velouria.

  • @MrTomservo85 that is awesome!

  • @MrTomservo85 you stole my kid name idea, good work.

  • @MrTomservo85 oh really? im sorry to hear that

  • @MrTomservo85 , we did too!

  • @HumbleRupertMurdoch Karate Chop!

  • Comment removed

  • @HumbleRupertMurdoch I'd just like to say this has been the most humble day of my life.

  • They did a damn good job with this song.

  • i remember meeting Carnival Art at a Pixies show way back when in Ventura.

  • If one band has the right to cover the Pixies, it's Weezer.

  • I always thought, because of the vocal melody and other parts of the song, that I could see Weezer covering this song. I guess I was right!

  • some one remixed "Monkey gone to heaven" and it's also awesome.

I saw them live in Buenos Aires. GOD!! now I can die happy.

  • @klinokinokino

    Fue lo mejor!!

  • excellent!!!! Super

  • Best Pixies Cover Ever!!!

  • Its allright. The Pixies version is still better cause' of Kim's voice in the background.

  • malísimo!!

  • BALLS

  • I like the different rhythm. It's hypnotic, and the lyrics stand out in a soothing way. Maybe not as spacey, but just as loony. And it has that nostalgic 90's post punk, power pop Weezer sound. I rate it groovy.

  • sorry to all hardcore pixies fans but, weezer did this song better, they are both great, this version is just better, at least to my ears :)

  • @Brackus2 I know musical taste is completely subjective, but you are FRIGGIN' HIGH if you think that this is even close to the original.

  • sadly, this is the best cover on the record... props to every band that tried...

  • @bucktoofus is there a pixies tribute album or something?

  • @h879xx Yes, there are SEVERAL Pixies tribute albums: '98 ~ Death 2 The Pixies, '99 ~ Pixies Fuckin' Die!, '99 ~ Where is My Mind?: A Tribute 2 The Pixies, '00 ~ Tribute 2 The Pixies, '03 ~ Hey - A Tribute 2 The Pixies, '04~ La La Love U Pixies!, '07 ~ Dig 4 Fire - A Tribute to the Pixies. Those R just the 1's I kno about. I believe there R a few more, also.

  • @blondenemesis Cheers, I'll check ebay.

  • Es horrible.

  • @PeS1258 horrible usted compadre, este cover esta bien chido

  • this cover would be much better with a real lead guitar...

  • youy can never cover the pixies and make their songs better. google it. lol

  • I know I'm gonna get my head ripped off for saying this, but I honestly believe this is way better than the original pixies version. Its energetic and feels "finished", I always felt the pixies version was missing something, and Weezer filled in the blanks quite nicely. You may now rip my head off.

  • @wartravs22 I totally agree with you. It probably has to do with my manic Weezer love (Pinkerton!)

  • @wartravs22 Head Ripped ;)

  • @wartravs22 Nobody should rip you for what is a subjective thing, that is silly. I might quibble with the reasons you listed, but you are entitled to your opinion, and anybody who attacks you with perjoratives is a jerk.

  • rubbish compared to the original

  • i like it

  • Two of my favorite bands ever.

  • It is too earnest! Velouria is bored

  • if you close your eyes you can pretend your listening to old weezer

  • @berkeley206 this is pinkerton era weezer, the best weezer

  • @berkeley206 This was actually recorded in '98. It's the first recording with Mikey instead of Matt.

  • it's too... too far from the original style. i don't know.. I guess the drums are totally different, this rythm doesn't fit. If they played the drums just like pixies' drummer did, it would be a lot better.

  • LOL "wrong key" Frank Black aka God likes this cover and so do I.

  • total shit...no where near the original...doesn't even begin to capture the same feeling, emotion, energy, power, etc etc etc ^^

  • Wrong key, too plodding.

  • i agreed that. It's useless.

  • i agreed that. It's useless.

  • It's a really good cover.

  • Fuckin great and original coversong..!!

  • hey guys

    are u all becomeing dumb???????????

    this is original!!

  • @ttsseet what's original?

  • reminds me of pinkerton

  • The music is not bad, but just the way Cuomo sings it...eeeeh. Kinda monotonous, IMO, lacks the emotion.

  • Really good cover! When did Weezer record this? Sounds like it would have been recorded during the Pinkerton era.. Was Matt still with them?

  • I think this is actually a pretty badass cover. It is a cover after all.

  • Comment removed

  • Okay, so this keeps the spirit of the original, while taking on a new mind of it's own using the cover artists style, meshing both styles together to create a fantastic cover?

And you guys say it's a bad cover?

  • I think most of you don't understand the purpose of covering a song. When a band covers a song they usually put their own style of brand to it. If they just did it exactly the way the original was it would be boring.

  • not horrible. drummer starts out with a nice little twist, then in the chorus tries to strangle a cymbal for some reason.

  • sux, sorry but it does.

they should have kept it straight, instead of trying to prove their fluent dynamics, if that makes sense?

They could have pulled it off better than most, oh well..

  • finally a band that does a cover of a pixies song and is not Where My Mind!!

  • @fede018 No label would try to do a tribute cd with all the same song...

  • @jasondcoi what? i said that almost all of the bands covering the Pixies, they pick Where Is My Mind

  • @fede018 right.. this is off a pixies tribute album.. nvm..over your head. my bad

  • @fede018 Where Is My Mind? A Tribute To The Pixies .... never heard? there are more covers than u may know,

  • @fede018 agreed!!! its about time lol

  • This cover is freakin' awesome

  • Lacks the bounce and swing of the original. Blame the drummer. And I love Weezer--just not this one.

  • No me gusto por estar en tonos mas bajos...

  • @CrappnIdiotsPROD According to you. That cover sounds pretty unharmful to me. Like homework done by a good boy.

  • I very much enjoy this. I don't have good opinions on music, being a neanderthal and all.

  • it wont be as good as the original, but i think this is the best cover on this tribute album

  • This is a GREAT cover. When I first heard Weezer I dismissed them as Pixies wannabes. Turns out, I was wrong. Having said that, I love this cover. :)

  • hmmmm when Weezer was still legit.... :(

  • great cover, doesnt quite stand up to the original though

  • fucking beverly hills 90210 version...go francis!!

  • Good cover version!

A good cover should sound different to the original; a tribute not a carbon copy.

This is different enough but is also true to the original Pixies song.

  • not bad. the drum beat gives the song a different feel.

  • i like this better than the pixies version, it sounds more mellow. =)

  • I do too. ;)

  • ouch.....

  • yeah, I like the Pixies original better, but this is still cool.

  • WHAT'S VELOURIA ANYWAYS????

  • Havelina is a kind of painting. I bet Velouria is an art reference

  • Thanks my friend!

  • I think it's a play on the word Velour. the lyrics also mention velveteen, and Velour is a similar type of fabric.

  • @Lambrequin apparently its about a fuzzy woman... serious

  • this song is kewl! original is better, but this is cool 2! totes!

  • I love the Pixies but Rivers is pure magic with this song.

  • Pretty solid cover. Comes off a little to emo-ish. One of my favorite bands covering a song by my favorite band.

  • i like weezer, I can't do it better... but SUCKS.

    PIXIES FOR LIFE!!!!

  • i noticed that some people disliked what i said about this song about a month ago. and all i can say is that if Cuomo wanted to make a good cover he would've changed the structure of the song completely and just kept the lyrics. or at least added new parts to the song that weren't originally part of the song. as a musician i can say this version is just not good. and going back to listen to early weezer that people go fucking crazy for isn't good either. they're just a generic indie band

  • YEAH!

  • Pixies FTW, wrote it, win it.

  • I think they did a great job actually, they brought their own sound to it !

  • Both of these are great, but Pixies wins imo.

  • i think they did a pretty fucking awesome job

  • $h!t on a stick!

  • Adorei!

  • I like Weezer and all, and I'm sorry in advance to their fans, but this is a very uninspired and uninspiring cover. I'll stick with the Pixies' original.

  • The entire Pinkerton album has a very similar sound to this song, so it's no wonder the cover is straightforward. Weezer can't put their own spin on it, because "Velouria" sounds so much like a Weezer song to begin with (yes, this song predates Weezer, but you know what I mean). Weezer openly sites the Pixies as an influence, and it's obvious that this song in particular really shaped Rivers' ideas about the kind of sound he wanted Weezer to have.

  • not a bad attempt!!!

  • original still better!

  • yeah dude, upper deck rivers's toilet

  • Holy fuckin tits, a Weezer cover of a Pixies song?! This can't get any better

  • dude, you're a fucking idiot. fuck you i hope you die. i hope your family burns. i hope jesus himself desc
