Dad was a marine with the 11th Gun Battalion. He left us a diary.

Oct 25 Jap fleet approaching Leyte Island so Bn. is moved into seacoast position on beach at San Jose. That night several more planes shot down. Also able to hear firing of U.S. Fleet in action against Jap vessels.

Oct 26 Still in seacoast position. Lt. Hartwell is killed by stabbing while on liason with other arty. Bn. The loss of a good officer and friend who has been with me since bootcamp.
