Hey Josh I recently purchased a Sony dcr vx1000, it uses sony dvc tapes, not so sure if that is the same as dv if so can you please clarify that. Also I'm not as sure if you can just connect the the firewire to the computer, there is something about a capture camera I've been hearing about, do you know anything about that ? Another thing I wanted to ask was can this only work in wmm? because I edit with Sony Vegas ? Last question when you play back on the computer does it wreck your tape heads?
@alexbrysonmiley DVC tapes are DV tapes. If your camera has a firewire input then it can connect directly to the computer. Sony Vegas can capture probably better using your Sony Camera than wmm. Playback on the computer never did any damage to the play heads on my cameras. Hope this helps.
Hey josh, i have a Canon GL1. i want to be able to do this but im not sure my computers have a firewire port... is there anything i can get or do to be able to transfer from cam to pc?
hey, thanks for the video, i have tried everything but, i went out and bought the new firewire ports, and have have my camera conected and the computer regonises it, but everytime i try to capture video in every program it doesnt work and just shows messages saying that it cant transfer them, really starting to do my head in!
Hey josh i have a Carl zeiss vario tessar but when I connect it with my Comp it says invalid cant connect with pc when in handycam mode or something what do i do
@manniac5150 Any firewire connector should work fine as long as you get the right size. I'm assuming your camera has a 4 pin connection, so be sure to get a cable with a 4 pin connector on one side.
when i connect my firewire device (panasonic pv gs 120) to my computer, NOTHING happens. no beeping, nothing. When I go into device manager, I can see that there is
"IEEE 1394 OHCI Compliant Bus Host Controllers" so there is a firewire card..

I get a option on the video camera that says "stream" when i connect it to the computer , but it won't recongnize my heardware. I've tried to find drivers for vista but it just hasn't worked, any sugestion any diffrent program i can use that may recognice my Sony handycam and catch the stream from my camera
I don't have a firewire port on my computer, so i got a firewire to usb adapter and it still wont work, it wont recognize the device! is there anyway to do this if it doesnt have a firewire port on the computer?
Great video, very easily understood. I can't wait to try this out. I have to buy a firewire. Thank you so much I am know going to watch the vhs video.
Hi, I have a really urgent question. I need a cable to connect my camcorder to my laptop and I wanted to know if I should use a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable. The end that plugs into my camcorder is the same size as the one that plugs into my laptop, but I'm unsure if it's the right one since the plug ends in this video are not totally the same shape.
@DavidsVideos505 well go in to your video editer and go to capture video via firewire and then put your canon gl1 in to playback and then on the monitor press play and then capture
@MarioRiccardi924 or you could buy a captur card and then do it like that.all a captur card does is record whats on the tv so plug your sony vx1000 in to the tv via av then capture it like that, thats the cheapest
Somebody please help. I have this kind of problem (and i have tried allmost everything): When i put firewire cable to computer and switch that "play" mode on on my camera, nothing happens. So i can't get my videos onto computer. I have 2 different cables and same problem whit them. Also the problem remains if i use some else editor than Movie Maker. pls help me
Very good learning video Josh! I have just come across your "LearnThisThing" videos as I was looking on YouTube to find out how to maximize the potential of my Sony DCR-HC62 Handycam which has Mini-DV tapes. @SuddenlySmile In most cases you can't transfer video from the camera to the computer using USB, I'm very sorry to say. If you don't want to spend the money on firewire, maybe you can find a friend that has a firewire port on their computer. You could capture the video onto their computer and then transfer it onto yours.

Once you cancel out of the error can you use your camera to capture in another program like Windows Movie Maker?
Did you use the uninstall wizard to remove the Nero Vision program? Perhaps there are some elements still on your computer that are causing it to try and link with your camera.
"Well Ok, I Have The JVC GR-D750U. It Has The DV Port On The Side Of The Camera Obviously. I Bought The Newest Compaq Tower With Vista On It From Early In The Middle Of 2009. Well Anyway I Tried A Firewire Cable Out, Plugged It Into My Camera And When I Went To Plug The Other Side Into My Computer, I Noticed My Tower Doesn't Have A Firewire Port On It. Do They Sell Adapters, Or Anything Of The Sort. Please Write Back, It Would be Appreciated. Thanks."
yea dude $50 a best buy tell them your PC doesnt have a firewire port, tell them your computer system and they'll select a firewire port thats ok for your PC, its SO easy to install
i have a JVC everio HDD camera. and in my vid production class we have a firewire but.... my camera doesnt have one it only have the little usb port like everything else. now in my video production class we have to turn off the computer and then put it in so we dont blow it. so do i have to do the same thing?
i confused. i found the 4 pin firewall area to plug into. however, i have a windows xp and also the back of my computer doesn't have a place to plug in the 6 pin. would i be able to find it on my system unit or is it just only ever on the back of the computer??
Here's my problem. Im using an HDR-FX7 camcorder which needs an i.Link cable to capture footage. The i.Link cable, however, does not use a port available on my 13' macbook pro. Is there an adaptor I can use to connect my macbook to the camera to capture? Please reply, I need to know.
You should be able to go from a 4 pin (small) "iLink" cord to a 6 pin firewire cable end. I have seen these types of cables. If you macbook has a 6 pin end then just find a 4 to 6 pin cable.
Is there any possible way to do this but with USB? cuz my DV cam has both USB and firewire connections, and it came with a USB witch seems wierdcuz it doesen't work. I Might get a firewire cable but i'am still woundering. Can you do this with USB instead? pleas reply, i must know.
As far as I know, no you can't use the USB to get your videos off your camera to your computer. At least not if it is a DV camera that has firewire on it. My camera has a USB port as well but it only works with the memory card.
Okay heres my problem dude. I got a 4pin-4pin firewall cable as my laptop has a 4pin firewall slot, so i plug the camera in and... nothing happens, no windows pop up saying new device installed. The camera is on Play (VCR). so i dont see the problem, any advice?
Here are my thoughts. Firewire devices sometimes act differently than USB peripherals. When you plug in a USB device the computer does a little bong and says, hay I see this device. Firewire devices can sometimes slip in the back door so to speak. Just because you have the camera plugged in doesn't mean it is going to mount on the desktop. You need to use a program like Movie Maker, to talk to the camera and play back and capture the footage. LMK if that helps if not we'll keep looking.
I afraid what you need is a firewire cable and port. Your computer is looking for a video device on the firewire bus but not on the USB bus. What that means is it won't find your camera connected to the USB port, but it will if you connect it through a firewire port.
If your computer has a firewire port, and your camera has a firewire port and you connect them correctly, then your computer should recognize the camera. That is how it works for me and so many others.
You have a couple of choices. You can put a firewire card in your PC or have some one do it for you. Or you could get an analogue to digital converter that connects to your computer through a USB slot. I suggest you get the card, it costs about the same but the video quality is better when you capture. You can get a card for around $39 and put it in yourself or take it to a computer store and have them install one for around $79.
i really want a vx1000 but its useless if i cant use it. im not going to buy i mac so forget it. is there any other way i can get it on my laptop or desk???
Generally the answer is no. I can't explain all the intricacies of why this is but you need to have a firewire cable and a firewire port on your computer in order to transfer DV footage from most camcorders.
I have a Panasonic dv100d, and I'm using a 4 to 4 pin firewire cable. My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000) isn't recognizing the device. I've tried many times to turn the camcorder on playback mode and then plugging it in, plugging it in and then turning on playback mode, etc.
Great presentation! Thanks...

Hi, when I plugin my Canon XM1, windows for some reason searches after Nero Vision and comes up with an error that it can't find it. Can you help me?
Gamingboy69 2 years ago
Do you have Nero Vision on your computer?
LearnThisThing 2 years ago
Not anymore. I removed it two or three days ago.
Gamingboy69 2 years ago
Once you cancel out of the error can you use your camera to capture in another program like Windows Movie Maker?
Did you use the uninstall wizard to remove the Nero Vision program? Perhaps there are some elements still on your computer that are causing it to try and link with your camera.
LearnThisThing 2 years ago
No, even after I have installed Windows Movie Maker it still comes up with the error.

Thanks."

Frustrating. Did you try starting up the computer with the camera already connected and turned on in VCR mode?
LearnThisThing 2 years ago
You may have to download a driver from your camcorder's website.

Here's my problem. Im using an HDR-FX7 camcorder which needs an i.Link cable to capture footage. The i.Link cable, however, does not use a port available on my 13' macbook pro. Is there an adaptor I can use to connect my macbook to the camera to capture? Please reply, I need to know.
nixpix66 2 years ago
You should be able to go from a 4 pin (small) "iLink" cord to a 6 pin firewire cable end. I have seen these types of cables. If you macbook has a 6 pin end then just find a 4 to 6 pin cable.

Is there any possible way to do this but with USB? cuz my DV cam has both USB and firewire connections, and it came with a USB witch seems wierdcuz it doesen't work. I Might get a firewire cable but i'am still woundering. Can you do this with USB instead? pleas reply, i must know.
AcDmovie 2 years ago
As far as I know, no you can't use the USB to get your videos off your camera to your computer. At least not if it is a DV camera that has firewire on it. My camera has a USB port as well but it only works with the memory card.

When it comes to siblings, we are never really happy, when we don't have a sib, we want one, if we do, we are annoyed.

Okay heres my problem dude. I got a 4pin-4pin firewall cable as my laptop has a 4pin firewall slot, so i plug the camera in and... nothing happens, no windows pop up saying new device installed. The camera is on Play (VCR). so i dont see the problem, any advice?
HariboTHEREDPAK 2 years ago
Here are my thoughts. Firewire devices sometimes act differently than USB peripherals. When you plug in a USB device the computer does a little bong and says, hay I see this device. Firewire devices can sometimes slip in the back door so to speak. Just because you have the camera plugged in doesn't mean it is going to mount on the desktop. You need to use a program like Movie Maker, to talk to the camera and play back and capture the footage. LMK if that helps if not we'll keep looking.

My laptop doesn't have a firewire port or a card slot to install a firewire card. Guess I am out of luck then.

i dont have a firewire, but i have a usb, and my pc is vista. but when i connect it nothing comes up. do i need an installation cd or sunthing/
SamirIslam95 2 years ago
I afraid what you need is a firewire cable and port. Your computer is looking for a video device on the firewire bus but not on the USB bus. What that means is it won't find your camera connected to the USB port, but it will if you connect it through a firewire port.
LearnThisThing 2 years ago
so if i get a firewire and connect my camcorder to my vista pc, will it automatically come up saying it recognizes it
SamirIslam95 2 years ago
If your computer has a firewire port, and your camera has a firewire port and you connect them correctly, then your computer should recognize the camera. That is how it works for me and so many others.
LearnThisThing 2 years ago
my camcorder has a firewire port, but my pc doesnt.
is there any alternative.
SamirIslam95 2 years ago
You have a couple of choices. You can put a firewire card in your PC or have some one do it for you. Or you could get an analogue to digital converter that connects to your computer through a USB slot. I suggest you get the card, it costs about the same but the video quality is better when you capture. You can get a card for around $39 and put it in yourself or take it to a computer store and have them install one for around $79.

can we transfer movies from dv camera to computer with USB cable ?
MRoo47 2 years ago
Generally the answer is no. I can't explain all the intricacies of why this is but you need to have a firewire cable and a firewire port on your computer in order to transfer DV footage from most camcorders.

I have a Panasonic dv100d, and I'm using a 4 to 4 pin firewire cable. My laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000) isn't recognizing the device. I've tried many times to turn the camcorder on playback mode and then plugging it in, plugging it in and then turning on playback mode, etc.
Please help :)
