I would have to agree with KrfNYC2: the state of music in genral is sad considering where we came from. There are very few quality singers and they all seek to sound the same...No individuality. They do what sells..which all to often is TRASH!
@KrfNYC2: Man you had me feeling your comment until you put Hip Hop in the mix. I can't stand Hip Hop....i think it is responsible for this weak music that is being produced today in the Black Community. Hip Hop has poisoned the music scene across the board.
Yes Black people sing with their bare souls, what else could be truer? They are equal to few, I heard it said that if you oppress people they sing better, because they are telling their story using their very souls, and none can take that away from US!
This song is a smokerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......i love how it starts off slow and then gets you moving. Back in the day the radio stations used to play it on the hour.....made us feel good too. If i died tonight and GOD said to me...."hey i am gonna let you go back to earth...which era do you wanna go back to" without a second thought it would be the 70s. Hands down the 70s was just a time of fun and happiness for me. I wish some of these young people could go on a journey to that era and see.
There wasn't much of the 70s that I did not like except for the mere fact that they had to end. Thanks to all Youtube music lovers who help keep these songs alive and kickin'. Wednesdays, Friday and Saturdays...DANCE DANCE DANCE!!!!
I lived in Southwest Philly, went to school and worked in Northeast Philly. Up at 4:30, in bed by midnight all week. When this song came out, 'crosstown' 'cross the bridges' and 'fall fast asleep' and the fact that it was TSOP made it MY song even though I was only 15 years old! Love those O'Jays.
I saw these guys in the mid seventies at what was Hammersmith Odeon so a nice trip down memory lane. I saw your Berlin Della Miles in Cesme in Turkey and she was great. I always felt that the Ojays and the detroit spinners never got therecognition they deserved
I am not trying to be racial....but i must say that blk ppl style of music is the most memorable music on earth. The depth to it is unmatched. @johndelve: I think alot of white radio stations didn't want to play blk music because they feared it would dominate what they call Rock....because if they tell the truth we gave the world Rock too. I been all over the world literally and i must say that this soul music is known all over the world. Somebody told me that they mess with the number of views.
@READY4REVELATION Soul, R&B, Funk...that whole scene is definitely where it's at to me. And, as we can see, 99.999% of it's big faces are black. I mean, I love The Beatles, Billy Joel and a handful of other white musicians. But c'mon...Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, D'Angelo, Earth Wind & Fire, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, The O'Jays, Curtis Mayfield, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, Sly & the Family Stone, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Prince, Parliament, The Temptations, and then all of hip-hop.
Mark, are you being corrected by The Holy Spirit of Christ The Lord Jesus? Are you resenting or taking lightly his judgment of you? Have you forgotten that The Holy Ghost reveals the call of God's promise made by Christ The Lord Jesus about The Lord's judgment? He says...
"When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world" (I Corinthians 11:32 of The Holy Bible).

They concentrated on making great music and exhilirating live performances, but didn't have the type of promotion it takes to become massive superstars. In Los Angels during the mid 70's to the late 80's the weekends were about partying-from Del Amo to West L.A. from Pasadena to Hawthorne. What a great time to be in college and a young professional.
Why do haters sign onto songs just to vote them down? Are their lives so small and pitiful that they just have to hate on people who have achieved things they can't even dream of achieving? I'm just wondering because their bitchassness has me so super confused!

Today's music has been taken over by demonic forces and that is why we can't feel it like this old school music. These artist today are under satanic influences and not able to freely express themselves. Notice how most ppl keep asking the same question,"what has happened to the music". You can always tell when music is real because it makes you feel a certain way,but most of today's music repulses the vast majority of the ppl.
@DaStr8Truth thats too true, if you wanna make it in the mainstream music industry you have to sell your soul for fame, and boy are people eager to make that money. Fucking pawns
U know what? This was the jam back in 1976. The Family Reunion album was the bomb. I still have this album in my possesson and man does this song bring back memories. DANG....the fun we use to have, especially with "Stairway to Heaven." Songs like this couldn't get any better. Thank u for posting.
now this is cool!! what ever happen to cool???? im from the old school my father, my moms, they played the hell out of this wow this bring back the good times.
In my heyday at Tri-State University 1975-1979 this was my signature cut. I would play it in my dorm after my last class on Friday and again Sunday evening after recovering from Livin' For The Weekend...well, well, l > well, well, I (sorry I've got to get back and study) :)
Looking forward to seeing my HFHS '86 Fam Saturday evening for our bowling event. Be there or B-square! If you are not you will not be able to share ... all the fun ... all strikes and no spares! Corny but true!
I happen to personally consider the O'Jays musical "superheroes". It's difficult to conceive of any artists being SO good, for SO long! These gentlemen were entertaining audiences when I was a young child..........and I happen to currently be a grandfather at the age of 53. Do the math folks......sustained GREATNESS is a joy to behold; and a blessing from God!
@aliquippawill The O'Jays were and to me still one of the greatest groups, besides the Temptations that graced the air waves. And I became a grandfather at 45. Now I'm 55 and a grandfather 4 times over. Lets just keep enjoying our work week, and KEEP ON LIVING FOR THE WEEKEND!!!
@wanttoseeit2 I'm 49 I remember this 1975 Philadelphia International Records O'Jays hit(I was 14 at the time)recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, Pa
This use to be my get off Friday & get ready to go to the club song. I was pumped by time I heard this about 5 times back to back. Dancing around the house liek a damn fool. My kids had to know when this came on it was going to the babysitter night. LOL!!!
You are damn right on the quality soul music that Motown and Philly Sound produced, but (I guess by mistake in light of the depth and breadth of your knowledge of soul music), you forgot to mention the mighty STAX RECORDS that recorded for Rufus Thomas, Green Onions, Otis Redding, Bar-Kays, The Staple Singers and the timeless Elvis Presley.
dijimpelr, you don't understand the theme of the song which is why you commented as you did. The point was to sound churchy because at the slowing of the song, he's talking about Sunday morning in church after partying Friday and Saturday night! Listen to more old school instead of the crap on the radio now that isn't talking about anything at all! Krazy3912 is on point!
I was listening to this classic jam (along with some of the other old school music) with my dad, my 16 year old son and my two 5 year old son and daughter on our late Sunday night drive on the quiet highways.
From about 1972 to 1976 the O' Jays were the best group in the world. But because they were a soul act rather than a rock one, they never got the massive acclaim to which they were entitled. This is just one of an almost endless stream of truly brilliant records they put out.
@johndelve --actually along with the O'Jays,Gladys & The Pips,Bobby Womack,Stevie Wonder,Barry White,Curtis Mayfield,Eddie Kendricks,Earth,Wind & Fire,The Isley Brothers,The Jackson 5/Jacksons,The Stylistics,The Spinners,Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes,Isaac Hayes,Marvin Gaye ,Roberta Flack ALL RELEASED multible albums FULL OF HITS !!
1970s===BEST DECADE FOR MUSIC EVER sandwiched by the great '60s and the last of the bands era '80s !
@johndelve Have you seen the recent O'Jays Unsung episode on TV One (or its website)? Your analysis is, in my opinion, why the O'Jays were on Unsung. Well put.
I can remember my mother playing this song. She loved this song, especially on a Saturday afternoon, at the cookout in the backyard. What fun a fun time to remember, with Grandkids and Parents dancing. Thank-you Mama for those memories, nad O'jays for the music...
Back in the day, they used to put on a show! With their live band behind them and they would be up there singing and dancing. It was feel good, sound of philly music! You would be out of your seat too!
I remember when we use to JAM off of this song. The very first time I heard it I had to give the Philly sound its props for the band and the Ojays WORKED this song. My family and relatives in NY use to party off this song and especially "Stairway to Heaven." Now I gotta find this album in my collection. Thanks for posting.
Did MFSB serve as the backing band for most of Gamble and Huff albums? I didn't know they played on anyone else's stuff, just thought they released their own albums and that was it.
i agree with you 100% or like the old folk used to say "You ain't never lying" lol some times i hear a clip of this song on joe madison's morning show and i wish they would play it all. and i do feel that i was born 20 years earlier.

dijimpelr, you don't understand the theme of the song which is why you commented as you did. The point was to sound churchy because at the slowing of the song, he's talking about Sunday morning in church after partying Friday and Saturday night! Listen to more old school instead of the crap on the radio now that isn't talking about anything at all! Krazy3912 is on point!

Slow part reminds me of the ole Male Chorus (deacons, ushers singing) at church

I was listening to this classic jam (along with some of the other old school music) with my dad, my 16 year old son and my two 5 year old son and daughter on our late Sunday night drive on the quiet highways.

From about 1972 to 1976 the O' Jays were the best group in the world. But because they were a soul act rather than a rock one, they never got the massive acclaim to which they were entitled. This is just one of an almost endless stream of truly brilliant records they put out.

I love how it starts out slow than picks up speed.Cause thats when "I" party down!!!

I figured out the slow parts and the fast parts of the song.
The first slow part is coming home from work on a Friday afternoon.
The fast part of the song is simply living and partying from Friday throughout Saturday night.
The second slow part of the song is Sunday. Weekend is winding down....but you look forward to NEXT WEEKEND. :-) :-)

MFSB was the rhythm section. Excellent!!! I grew up on this stuff.
rwyatt26 1 year ago
@rwyatt26
Did MFSB serve as the backing band for most of Gamble and Huff albums? I didn't know they played on anyone else's stuff, just thought they released their own albums and that was it.
