Maybe he didn't raise enough to get the guy with a Jack to fold. This is what happens when you check to the river. Of course, you give somebody with 2 overcards a better chance to draw out on you knowing that nobody hit their flush draw and it was too cheap for them to hold on to the river. Quite often someone has something like pocket dueces and then they hit trips on the river and tear you up every time because you didn't raise to protect your hand.
