Thank you for posting this interview. Whether we agree or not with Jung or Freud's theories, no reasonable person can deny the immense impact they had on the history of psychology
You fool emotion is a part of rationalitly your u cannot have one wihout the other imagine a person that didnt feel emotion they wouldnt consider other peoples situation, only the best outcome and would be considered a madman they basically would be a biological robot with no emotion
man is a rational creature... this statement is wrong. He is only partially rational, while the rest of him is not Unconscious is not rational, emotions are not rational, instinct is not rational: at least, we can say they have their own logic).
Due to the neurophysiology of the mind & the overwhelming strength of the subconscious over cognitive reason, for better or worse, man is NOT a rational creature!
In short, the 18th Century relational model of man is INCORRECT
(reference cognitive linguist George Lakoff - The Political Mind)
I disagree. Man is a rational creature, it's just that the level at which his rational instinctive programming works is far beyond our current ability to understand.
Example: Reproductive instincts. There's a reason we have such peculiar habits of chasing "bad boys", teasing each other and so on. They serve a great purpose to our genes, but most people don't get it.
Man is "controlled" by his inner subconscious Fears & Desires
Others like Edward Barney's, Freuds Nephew, made a living on exploiting this human weakness to sell commercial goods & elect politicians
By these observations, & many studies by experts of cognitive & neurological fields of expertise have demonstrated that man can easily be manipulated by his irrational fears & desires - And that man is unable to overcome this powerful innate frailty
No, rational doesn't include empathy, self-reflection or connection or needing to live a full love.
Go to google and put in "define rational." Rational means using reason. Period.
There is a reasoned basis for our minds: the furthering of our genes. When we consider our behavior and how it could accomplish that purpose, you'll find that man is a rational creature.
Your philosophical discourse comes only from a confusion of words. Wittgenstein is right again.
@EGarrett01 Man cannot be fully rational because of his emotional center he is born with. Because this is true then it follows that there will exist a part in him that is always is irrational. Saying that man is rational is like saying man is born without emotions. It is only through acquirng that man can attain reason and not be born with it.
@EGarrett01 Explain the claim that 'furthering of genes' claim is relevant to your topic. If it is relating to the propagation of species that it has no relevance to reason. That belongs in evolutionary psychology. That is biological traits we find desirable and are attracted to. I believe you have confused your own words. Wittgenstein was right, but with you. Look up 'Helen Fischer', she does a good bit on traits and encompasses desirable phenotypes we search for.
Perhaps because they don't realize how to achieve it. Most people are simply not educated on it, and thus have no desire to seek out that which they cannot even comprehend.
It didn't take long after the toxic treaty of Versailles for anybody & everybody to KNOW that Germany HAD to go to war again, (eg, the ridiculous war reparation debts & collective economic embargo's against it - eg Macy's couldn't sell anything made in Germany or else face massive picketing & protest)
The collective German psyche did NOT cause the 2nd world war - Rather the Balfour Declaration, Treaty of Versailles & economic embargo's assured the coming of WW2
But, at the same time, society cannot properly serve all individuals unless we all work together to make a society, and not simply assume that the society will work for us. We cannot all go our own ways, and assume that the safety net will simply enlarge to accommodate our diverse activities - we must first work to enlarge the net ourselves.

EG
George Lakoff: The Political Mind
Along with countless others have proven man is NOT "enlightened" nor rational
The reason: Because like all creatures, he is over powered by the brute force of his subconscious
However, with great discipline, man CAN become enlightened, (though this is something few humans endure)

Define "rational" and "enlightened" as you're using the terms.

The immune system, the hypothalamus, the ventro-medial frontal cortices, and the Bill of Rights have the same root cause
The public's mind is mostly unconscious, physically affected by stress, and has been shaped by past experience (framing)
Once a man has framed his perception it can't be changed - The smallest inconsistency would cause a system crash
Rational: cultivating empathy, responsibility, self-reflection, and a sense of connection, together with a full life based on them

Precisely
Man is not a rational thinker
His "subconscious" fears & desires are much more powerful than his ability to consciously rationalize!
sugarpuddin88 2 years ago
But his subconscious fears and desires have a logical purpose of their own.

Fears & Desires were of use long ago for ancient man
But today they are exploited by sophisticates without morality
