@mdnoorfairouz True, but all he had to do to protect the pawn at G2 was to move forward one, save him trading a rook for a knight. Unless his move was better.
@johnmilo117 that move would be an instant loss. What follows is Nh3+, KF1 only move, and f4! ripping the g3 pawn and preparing rook and queen to come to the almost open g file. It would be a totally losing move.
@hthought and if you make a deeper calculation and go down some moves, you will see that the queen will have to move to d2 after f4, which is the only square to keep it in game really, allowing also tactics to the black queen on the white knight on c5, which is not protected now. White will either lose the queen after Rf2+ forking the king and queen or get mated if queen goes to c1, where it' totally passive. The loss would be some moves away.

Amazing that just before his death and looking very ill he sneaked out of hospital and gate-crashed a blitz gathering with kasparov crushing everybody as usual. Security at the door entrance stepped aside.(They tend to do that for ex-world champions!) Tal then asked gary for a game. Gary obliged and then tal produced an amazing sequence of moves in a mega sharp sicilian and beat him!! See this amazing short game AND the video of this incredible game here on youtube.
I've lost several games like Fischer did here, only at several levels of skiller lower. Tal brilliantly wears his opponent down and goes for the kill when he smells blood. Thanks for the commentary, great stuff.
One of those situations where white can get 3 pieces for the queen early & a good game with 11. e5. Then if 11...Bb7 12. exf6 Bxf3 13. fxe7 Qxe7 14. Rxf3.
KC, i see this video is a few years old now. Have you run some of these games through the newer Rybka software and clarified any analytical questions you may have had in the past?
Tal was a world champion "only" for a one year but as you can see he's beaten most former and future champions: Botwinnik, Fischer,Karpov, Kasparov etc. This is a proof that we can not speculate about best chesspalyer ever. Botvinnik proved that contemporary chess more depends on better preparation than extraordinary talent though this last is a must.
it must be sweet to beat bobby even in 1959, i bet when Tal played him he was already aware of his games and must have analyzed his opponent thoroughly.
No! If Nxe4 7. Qh5 g6 8. Qd5 Nc5 9. Qxf7+ wins for white. Incidentally in his book "How to beat Bobby Fischer" Edmar Mednis thinks that 10 0-0 is a mistake and 11. f5 is the losing mistkae by white
Very smooth, with a feeling of inevitability. No spectacular sacrifices, just smooth positional pressure that transitioned to brutal tactics when the time was right.
That's exactly it Geo. Just follow the rules of chess (position) and safely put your pieces on good squares, and you will be rewarded with a tactical masterpiece in the end.
at 2:43 when White played Bf2 it looks like black could just win a piece with Qa5 (knight has no retreat squares) but then a3! is probably what Fischer had in mind. Thought this was worth mentioning.
It's a real shame that Tal's health prevented a proper showdown between he two sometime in the mid to late 60's. Heck, a healty Tal might very well have been waiting for Fischer in Iceland. Spassky was a VERY solid player, but I think Tal or even Korch would have offered a more energetic fight in 72.
Excellent commentary. Foregoing the usually dry variant heavy specifics for a more general and entertaining concept-explaining approach. I thoroughly enjoyed this!
7:20 - why trade a rook for a knight?
johnmilo117 4 months ago
@johnmilo117 its like a decoy,to release pressure from the king side coz knight and bishop were aiming for the g2 square

@5.16, why didn't Fischer just move his pawn on the g file to chase away the knight? Great commentary by the way. Thank you.

at 4:28, why doesn't fisher take the h7 pawn with check, capturing another pawn and further exposing the black king?
ggaeta91 1 year ago
@ggaeta91 then fischer couldn't checked the king with its queen because of the knight on f4
4108194 1 year ago
@4108194 That doesn't matter, Fischer would be a pawn up, which can't be bad and the position of Tal's king would be simply very unreliable.
