Has to be one of the top 5 classic Canadian films ever made... but more than that it belongs in the international catalog, not just Canada or north America.
Wish I could see this again. Saw it in the theater when it first came out and never since. It's been a long time but I can still see many of the scenes clearly in my mind's eye. When he brought the apple peeling/coring/slicing machine home to his sister and the reaction that her husband had to it still makes me feel sad. This film is full of heart and soul and a treat to watch.
Someone please get it out on DVD. What is the reason for it's not being available? I'd love to purchase it.
Why oh why isn't this great film available on DVD? I was hoping there'd be a 25th anniversary edition in 2007, but no such luck. My recording made on VHS when it aired on CBC years ago is wearing out. Criterion, are you listening?
The Grey Fox was made in 1981 and released in 1982 but it's a timeless movie. It feels like a much older movie than it actually is. A true cinema classic.
A very lovely & kind man, & a dear friend. I'm just glad people can see him in the all too few films he made. I'm just sorry that he came to work in front of the camera so late in his life.
I never heard him say anything unkind about anybody except for one man, another stuntman who was much too full of himself.
This scene is SOOOO cool; savoring sips of the worlds' finest rotgut likker, relaxing with a stogie or hand-rolled cigarette, the sound of a steam locomotives' whistle in the distance.....and "Grandpa" smashing a bottle against some smart-mouthed punks' face hahaha!
@pikeymutt I'm an atheist and a liberal and I don't see your point. He shot himself cause he had terminal bone cancer with nothing but intolerable pain and slow death to look forward to. That's euthanasia. I probably would do the same thing. He didn't shot himself because he was depressed. That's suicide. The motivation is the difference.
does anyone know where i can find this movie online?

newbeat128 You got that right. Anything Richard Farnsworth is in I watch.
Got this DVD soon after it came out. Quite a man and quite an actor.
How about Wilfred Brimley and this man in The Natural. Like ham and eggs.

Farnsworth committed euthanasia... on himself... not suicide. Big difference.

@fauxtoehead lol. Suicide. He killed himself. Quit trying to church things up, you sound like a Liberal.

This is such a classic film. Films today simply aren't made with these textures and feel. Farnsworth is a classic.
