Jeff is there some guide to making these for practice. Like what to use and what distances to space them at?

The official guide for international comps is the FAI's sporting regulations section 10. In the U.S., it's on USPPA.org under competition. The basics for the japanese slalom are 3 sticks in a row (1-2-3), 50 meters apart. Stick 4 is 50 meters away from stick 2 and perpendicular to the 1-2-3 line. Good luck!
