Hi, vfx, I have the same sony hdr-xr500, but every time i try to upload a family video to Youtube looks horrible, max i can get is 480 @mpeg-2 or wmv, how can you keep this amazing quality in your videos, thanks!
I'm looking for a telephoto lens that will work with the Sony HDR-XR500, but I'm having the biggest amount of difficulty... I've been told that only High Grade lenses work on it and must be on a 30mm adapter ring, but I can't find any HG lenses on adapter rings... Is there any info you can give me on lenses for this model?
@vfxworld Excellent! I just found out that the people at Sony were wrong. It is a 37mm filter, not 30... I tell ya, I love this camera and their products are SUPER slick, but their customer service is awful. So I will be going with that one. Thanks for your help!
@vfxworld oh, i didnt think you recorded in 25 fps, i know this is the standard in europe im here too ;P but usually the new cameras record at 60 fps so i assumed this was the case. (btw if you have this option then it will look a lot better and youll be able to make some slow mo too). and yeah, i think uploading @ 30 looks better, and using the PAL framerate is for oldies XD.
@vdostream you can navigate to the menu using the remote. Than you can control the focus. With some practice you get a feel for how far to set the slider for a good DoF.
Very nice video, I have the exact same camera. how do you focus so fast to show depth of field though? I use the little manual nob in the front, but it takes quite a few turns to get things to focus infront of behind the object.
You may convert it before using it in After Effects since AE works with uncompressed footage in the background and while handling with high compressed footage like AVCHD, AE may miss some of the interframe data. That means a lagging video.
Hi, really nice video. I just purchased the 200ve version of this camera, i think from doing my research the only difference between the 500 and 200 is the ammount of built in disk space and megapixel of the still shots etc. So im fairly sure the 200ve should be able to do this. Just out of interest though, how do you adjust the DOF on the camera as you film? i understand you need to use certain techniques to make it look better, but still is there a DOF setting? ive not checked with mine yet.
well, to understand dof you need to look at the lens and understand how everything works.
But yes, the 500v has a focus controller. You can bind it on the small adjustwheel or you can go into the menu while filming and adjusting it there - or use the remote control.
Thank you so much for the Video, you did a great job (Five Stars) ! I also appreciate you sharing your knowledge with others and technique, between the video and your kind spirit, it really shows who you are as a human being, which is a very rare one indeed. Thanks and have a wonderful day !
are all sony cameras compatible with adobe software. because i was reading up on the canon hg10 and it said that the file format has to be converted and the quality degrades with it.
well, I don'T know about every Sony Cam. But the newest HDD camcorders from sony (as the HDR-xx xx series) record to AVCHD, in the *.m2ts mpeg2 format. This format is compatible with the adobe products.
Because the cam records directly in *.m2ts, there is no decreasing quality as I am able to tell you (you may get other thoughts when asking other people). And since the Canon HG 10 records to the same format you'll be able to work with ur footage in the Adobe products if you use that cam.
ahhh. 35mm is a big misunderstanding in most cases when people ask.
No, I didn't. 35mm is used to get good DoF, but that's better used in tape cams, recording on 35mm tape (cinema cameras, costs abour 10000$.). A 35mm adapter trys to decrease DoF (on tape cams).
Yer, i thought about showing you my production workflow in Adober Produciton Premium CS4.
This topic of filming is pretty complex. To make it short:
zooming in means compressing Space (I won'T say why, that's a little difficult...). In Space compression, the DoF is not that much and good (most time you zoom in if you want to 1.: Decrease DoF or 2.: Compress space=internal relationship between characters when talking,.....). I achieve DoF when moving close to the objects and than adjusting the DoF. DoF is [based] on the Lightrays passing through cameras Lens.
ok thanks im thinking about getting one and i didnt want to get a camera that always lags. but it doesnt do that at all when you watch it on your computer?
I just purchased the camera this past weekend and going to take it out of the box tonight. What software do you recommend to edit adding text and sound? I don't have a Mac a Pc :(

@Skadalilama what about the VCL-HG1737C?
It was made for this camera.
Yes, if you want to apply another lens not made for this camcorder, you need an adapter ring.

the image is crisp and very nice and all but the frame rate is messed up. is the original as laggy ad this? or did you render it with low fps?
kakisback 1 year ago
@kakisback rendered to .f4v and low bitrate. The framerate is 25 fps.
vfxworld 1 year ago
@vfxworld looks bad. i mean the bumpyness. you said you were using steadycam... doesnt show... try rendering to wmv or avi or something, with 30 fps
kakisback 1 year ago
@kakisback this was not recorded with steadycam!
I'm european. I can't render to 30 fps cause I record to 25 ;)
And why should i render to .avi or .wmv for WEB EXPORT?! Doesn't make sense.

kakisback 1 year ago
@kakisback I know my camera pretty well.
It's a HDR-XR500 so I'm stuck with 25 fps. No way to shoot any other framerate.
The laggy kinda stuff is cause of the converting to web formats like .f4v.

I can't seem to control the slider with the remote but I find using the Spot Focus via the touch screen pretty effective for DOF
vdostream 1 year ago
@vdostream it is, but when you are working with a steadycam system like I have one, you can't do that. Remote control is better.
vfxworld 1 year ago
@vfxworld How do you "bind" the focus dial to the remote commander?
vdostream 1 year ago
@vdostream you can navigate to the menu using the remote. Than you can control the focus. With some practice you get a feel for how far to set the slider for a good DoF.

how to did you boost the colors so well? (you can be specific, i'll understand)
reebanoomba 1 year ago
@reebanoomba this is a little longer time ago. But I think I used normal Levels and Curve controls.
Nowdays I like using blending bethods, they are a lot easier and better to control. Try out composite overlay your level controls.
I got a rough tutorial for a simular color on my channel, check it out.

Why you do not use ActiveStab ? This video is very very shaked on macro.
djonlinemoscow 2 years ago
The optical stabilisation option is turned on.
I just didn't use the remote control for focusing, I used the wheel.
Also I zoomed in to compress space, so it's nearly impossible to not shake the camera, even with the stabilisation option turned on.

How did you achieve a shallow DOF? Did you zoom in and stand back? Or?
