the race selection is also far better in wow, however the race/class restrictions can be a huge pain if the class you want to play as isnt available to your favorite race. for example, i cant make a draenei rogue. FFXI definitely has the better class system with its ability to use a sub class, and the wider range of classes available
i currently have a subscription to both games. still a wee bit new (i started this summer and have 1 lv 85 in wow w/ an avg ilv of 355, and 4 classes at lv 60 in FFXI) but thats plenty to make a comparison. being able to solo is a godsend and i really think the party-play should stick to dungeons or end game content like with wow. i dont like having to be CONSTANTLY in a party in FF, just to do things like get a mount or earn a new class, or level.
I played wow for like 6 months was so fcking gay. Their crafting,auction house,lvling system was terrible. Been on fxi 8 years and everything is a challenge but fun and it never gets old!!!!

Played both, played FFXI for 6 years & WoW for 4 and I have to say when I quit FFXI i was WAY more upset than when I quit WoW. FFXI's best items are NOT on the AH. The PvP isn't as good as WoW but it's not really a focus point of the game. FFXI is more about TEAM WORK as apposed to being able to solo most everything in WoW. Leveling in FFXI takes time and skill, any n00b could level their character to max in WoW. If you suck in FFXI, it gets around and you do not get party invites. FFXI>WoW.
You don't need skills to play FFXI. You just need to permanently have ppl with you and waste a lot of time. But sorry I wanna play and have fun... FFXI is just slow and bland. I played for 4 years and I realised how much money I wasted for this. Quests are so boring, the endgame is overrated, the most abilities you can have with a job is like 5 and usually 3 of them are almost useless with high cooldown, area and mobs are recycled. Maybe WoW is easy, but at least its more appealing and quick.
I just think WOW has a bigger fan base is because it's easy to play. Easy to lvlYou get far in the game so fast. But unlike FFXI, because of the quickness that exists, WOW players end up bored out of their mind. Hence the MASSIVE expansion release that Blizzard has done over the years.They abused that,and it's because of the quickness you can get to end game. You can't do that in FFXI, each expansion takes time, plenty of time and skill. Tho SE has fixed that and skill is less required anymore.
Wow just lacks that SKILL NEEDED TO PLAY. Like posted before, a guy could get level 60 in 3 days. When I first started playing, getting lvl 75 was an accomplishment in FFXI. You spent days in Valkrum Dunes, and ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS IN FFXI spent that time in the dunes getting owned to learn the game. It's the players that put in that time, that are still around, who did it the hard way, that are the ELITE players of FFXI Before they made leveling easy....me and my friends are products of that

FFXI takes skill, timing, focus. Ever see a ninja try to tank with absolutely NO SKILL, NO TIMING? Or a PLD even with neither of them skills? They can't play.
WOW is all button mashing skills over and over and over and over. You have to THINK about when you are gonna cast your NI > Ichi Shadows so you don't get hit, interrupted.
Wow fails in my eyes because of the complete simplicity of it all. It takes true skill and team work to achieve some of the greatest things in FFXI.

WoW was easy...3 days I could get to lv 60 back in the day...I toubt things have changed or gotten harder. Also, they have this buddy program where if you sign up a friend and level with them, you get free level's every certain amount of levels they get. And you get to apply them to what ever you want to apply them to. FFXI DOES deal more with pulling in the person who likes to be put into the story. WoW never did that for me...

I played FFXI for 3 years of my life, and I'll never forget it. It's a team effort and takes years to master. I made friends all over the world, and I ended up going to Japan to see them.
WoW is more fun and easy to accomplish things, but there will never be a game quite like FFXI. And no game, NO game, has ever beaten the incredible depth of the storyline of FFXI. That world's politics was more interesting than the one we live in, and THAT is saying something.
Ffxi has my heart, good community and great graphics. I just wish Gamestop and the other game sellers didn't D-list it, or I'd go buy the pc copy and keep playin. I played WoW all the way to level 62, and I felt like I didn't accomplish anything. In ffxi I felt accomplised for hitting lvl 18...

WoW has 11 million subscribers because it's designed for 4 year olds to beat it and uses 8 bit nintendo graphics. WoW's success rate is just the natural result when you put computers in the hands of completely tech illiterate people. They don't know there is anything else out there other than WoW, so they're stuck playing an inferior product. I even like Blizzard and have bought the collector's edition of every Blizzard product, and WoW is bar none their worst game they've ever put out.

I played wow for 1 year and FFXI for 3 years the main difference between the 2 games are the similaritys I FFXI to reach end game you NEED friends or a good LS so you can reach end game same with wow. But except in wow you dont need anyone to help you get to final lvl and good gear come to those who work hard. FFXI is all about team play a group of ppl working as a single unit not unlike wow. Wows just not as deadicated
HUH? to do endgame specifically the heriocs you must have a extremely good guild you are in and the heroic dungeons are 10X harder than any in FFXI and require alot more skill did you even play the endgame in WOW? and if you did were you good enough to play any endgame heroic raids
@Marsonis the answer is no i didnt do end game as you say it. i didnt have a good guild it was average we lost as many as we won and I didnt have a good LS either not for a lack of trying. but if i recall befor i left the game there was an unbeaten super boss that took 18 hours or more to beat never seen just heard saw a few clips and was like thats above me.

the thing that takes WoW higher then all games is the never ending content once you finish most it the next exspansion is comming out. FF is no where near a top games or even close. and pvp in WoW is much different is probably what they ment more aggressive. but in FF defence they did very well with some content and very well on the storyline. in FF you can get most your items can be bought or built. so there is a cross over between the 2. but WoW only wins due to never ending content.

And no PVP is much different the only difference is in WoW you can do it on the spot in XI you there are 2 versions one is ballista and other is brenner i havent done ballista yet but brenner is a pretty fun organised team based but not required to be in a team pvp and you can fully let loose on there too

I played WoW for a couple of months. got to level 54 i believe... by myself. the game itself is ok. but the community is completely trashed. My friend has played since launch ( and thats how I started to play) and was a blizzard fan boy until this weekend when they permenantly banned him and accused him of selling gold for real world currency. he has spent at least 1152 dollars in subscription fees alone playing that game. there community in terrible and now their policy AND support is terrible.

WOW doesn't have 11 million people, there are 11 million accounts registered. People have multiple accounts and mule accounts all the time. AND on top of this, currently WOW has topped out, and since that claim of 11 million was staked, they've not gained any more, while FFXI has broken even on revenue and is actually nearing 300,000 players. As in, not multiple accounts.
The best items are not in FFXI auction house. In fact, 9/10 items in the auction house for "endgame" (that's level 75) are subpar and there's almost ALWAYS a better item available through either Missions or Rare Monsters.
Relic weapons in FFXI take 1-2 RL years to obtain. I hardly consider that easy to obtain or purchasable from AH. A lot of items also take months and months to get your hands on.
FFXI is challenging to the point of at times it's almost punishing.

Anyways, i played WoW for the free week trial... i did not enjoy it. Thought the swimming part of it was fun, but the Battles in FFXI require a lot more strategy on the fact that they are a lot longer to take one monster down. WoW i dunno, felt to colorful... pink and purple don't make good skin tones.... or scenery. To whom their own though. It is all a matter of like or dislike, deal with it i say. :3

Im guessing most of you completely missed the debate here. WoW imo has much more options and is more challenging than FFXI. Yeah, the races are played exactly the same such as rogues and thieves, white mages and priests, etc but in FFXI its too easy to obtain the best gear for each class as in WoW you have to do multiple instances to gather the best of gear and most of the best stuff in those instances have anywhere from 0-12% drop chance between 10/25 people going for that item. WoW[X] FFXI[ ]
@Megazerox336 That is extremely true. As much as I loved the game, I spent the majority of my time doing quests for gear, completing prerequisite quests gear, running about trying to obtain items for gear, doing things to get gil for gear, or doing things that allow me to gain gil for gear faster.
Sure, physically using the AH is easy, and looking up quests is easy, but in practice it takes a LOT work, and I imagine a lot more work and a lot more challenging work than WoW will ever dare offer.
idk wat ur smoking but ffxi is one of the hardest games ive ever played and i love it for that. any blizzard game ive ever played i was a fuckin pro within a month, diablo 2, starcraft, even WoW.... but uh ffxi has alot more shit to do and alot more content than WoW. ask any ffxi player if they r done everything in the game and r waiting for the next expansion or patch there is no one. ask anyone in WoW the same thing and it will prolly be anyone with a lvl 80 char

I think you need to relook at your facts. Just because you can get a party easier in WOW doesnt make it better and because WOW has more people doesnt mean its better either. In FFXI it takes so long to get a party because that game is based off making friends. And as far as PvP is concerned. To me its over rated. FFXI is much much better then WOW. There is always something to do, always. And gear isnt everything. Besides at least the ppl that play FFXI have the time to help low lvls.

about half as many ppl play now as in 04 but theres still between 1.5k-2k people on each server at any given time but usually peaks out when the japanese players log on.

I don't play WoW, but have nothing against it, but comparing the two is like comparing 4x4 trucks vs. sports cars in different environments. The car will get nowhere in the mud while the truck will be slower on pavement, (Just an analogy, I don't need replies stating how it could differ in certain circumstances.) A casual gamer may prefer WoW due to not needing a group, not waiting means faster progress. WoW has a huge aim at PvP, where FFXI is more about co-op; it's about what YOU want from it.
to figure out the way to make it work for you. It doesn't take a lot of effort, just a bit of research. He must have been terrible at the game if he believes that all the best gear can be bought, because that's far from true. If after that long he still hadn't passed lvl 70, he hadn't actually done any of the 'real' game content. It sounds to me more like he had a grudge against the game than a solid opinion. Your opinions were actually explained which gives them a lot more merit. wow only has more players because its new and blizzard pays a lot of money for advertising. ffxi is like 8 years old and square does NO advertising at all.
Played both games for long enough to say my thoughts on both FFXI: BLM 75 RDM 75, WoW:80 Rogue, 80 Mage, 80 Shaman. Both games have things I like better than the other but I definite liked FFXI better for preforming anything that required a group, it just went a lot smoother.
Biggest things I didn't like was deleveling, not being able to do much solo, much harder to acquire money in game which never much interested me that much, I just farmed it for gear.
Wow seems fun and fine and all. But I grew up playing MMO's like UO and EQ. Those MMO's were hardcore RPG's. Earing everything and building a community were key to everything.
FFXI feels more like an MMO should to me. Not saying WOW is bad, but its just too casual for real gamers, that's all. Not enough challenge or variety.
i soloed my way to lvl 70 Red mage subbing ninja or dancer as well as having my own AI partner with me as well
on rare occasions i subbed Bstmaster with an AI partner look at that a 3-man party i took out "Tough" to "VT" mobs often like that and helped me cap my skills

the race selection is also far better in wow, however the race/class restrictions can be a huge pain if the class you want to play as isnt available to your favorite race. for example, i cant make a draenei rogue. FFXI definitely has the better class system with its ability to use a sub class, and the wider range of classes available

i currently have a subscription to both games. still a wee bit new (i started this summer and have 1 lv 85 in wow w/ an avg ilv of 355, and 4 classes at lv 60 in FFXI) but thats plenty to make a comparison. being able to solo is a godsend and i really think the party-play should stick to dungeons or end game content like with wow. i dont like having to be CONSTANTLY in a party in FF, just to do things like get a mount or earn a new class, or level.

Played both, played FFXI for 6 years & WoW for 4 and I have to say when I quit FFXI i was WAY more upset than when I quit WoW. FFXI's best items are NOT on the AH. The PvP isn't as good as WoW but it's not really a focus point of the game. FFXI is more about TEAM WORK as apposed to being able to solo most everything in WoW. Leveling in FFXI takes time and skill, any n00b could level their character to max in WoW. If you suck in FFXI, it gets around and you do not get party invites. FFXI>WoW.

You don't need skills to play FFXI. You just need to permanently have ppl with you and waste a lot of time. But sorry I wanna play and have fun... FFXI is just slow and bland. I played for 4 years and I realised how much money I wasted for this. Quests are so boring, the endgame is overrated, the most abilities you can have with a job is like 5 and usually 3 of them are almost useless with high cooldown, area and mobs are recycled. Maybe WoW is easy, but at least its more appealing and quick.

I just think WOW has a bigger fan base is because it's easy to play. Easy to lvlYou get far in the game so fast. But unlike FFXI, because of the quickness that exists, WOW players end up bored out of their mind. Hence the MASSIVE expansion release that Blizzard has done over the years.They abused that,and it's because of the quickness you can get to end game. You can't do that in FFXI, each expansion takes time, plenty of time and skill. Tho SE has fixed that and skill is less required anymore.

Wow just lacks that SKILL NEEDED TO PLAY. Like posted before, a guy could get level 60 in 3 days. When I first started playing, getting lvl 75 was an accomplishment in FFXI. You spent days in Valkrum Dunes, and ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS IN FFXI spent that time in the dunes getting owned to learn the game. It's the players that put in that time, that are still around, who did it the hard way, that are the ELITE players of FFXI Before they made leveling easy....me and my friends are products of that

FFXI takes skill, timing, focus. Ever see a ninja try to tank with absolutely NO SKILL, NO TIMING? Or a PLD even with neither of them skills? They can't play.
WOW is all button mashing skills over and over and over and over. You have to THINK about when you are gonna cast your NI > Ichi Shadows so you don't get hit, interrupted.
Wow fails in my eyes because of the complete simplicity of it all. It takes true skill and team work to achieve some of the greatest things in FFXI.

They shoot poison blast, breath fire, fly in the air, you can sometimes jump into tanks and attack with them. What about FFXI? WoW was easy...3 days I could get to lv 60 back in the day...I toubt things have changed or gotten harder. Also, they have this buddy program where if you sign up a friend and level with them, you get free level's every certain amount of levels they get. And you get to apply them to what ever you want to apply them to. FFXI DOES deal more with pulling in the person who likes to be put into the story. WoW never did that for me...

I played FFXI for 3 years of my life, and I'll never forget it. It's a team effort and takes years to master. I made friends all over the world, and I ended up going to Japan to see them.
WoW is more fun and easy to accomplish things, but there will never be a game quite like FFXI. And no game, NO game, has ever beaten the incredible depth of the storyline of FFXI. That world's politics was more interesting than the one we live in, and THAT is saying something.

WoW has 11 million subscribers because it's designed for 4 year olds to beat it and uses 8 bit nintendo graphics. WoW's success rate is just the natural result when you put computers in the hands of completely tech illiterate people. They don't know there is anything else out there other than WoW, so they're stuck playing an inferior product. I even like Blizzard and have bought the collector's edition of every Blizzard product, and WoW is bar none their worst game they've ever put out.

I played wow for 1 year and FFXI for 3 years the main difference between the 2 games are the similaritys I FFXI to reach end game you NEED friends or a good LS so you can reach end game same with wow. But except in wow you dont need anyone to help you get to final lvl and good gear come to those who work hard. FFXI is all about team play a group of ppl working as a single unit not unlike wow. @Marsonis the answer is no i didnt do end game as you say it. i didnt have a good guild it was average we lost as many as we won and I didnt have a good LS either not for a lack of trying. but if i recall befor i left the game there was an unbeaten super boss that took 18 hours or more to beat never seen just heard saw a few clips and was like thats above me.

the thing that takes WoW higher then all games is the never ending content once you finish most it the next exspansion is comming out. FF is no where near a top games or even close. and pvp in WoW is much different is probably what they ment more aggressive. but in FF defence they did very well with some content and very well on the storyline. in FF you can get most your items can be bought or built. so there is a cross over between the 2. but WoW only wins due to never ending content.

I played WoW for a couple of months. got to level 54 i believe... by myself. the game itself is ok. but the community is completely trashed. My friend has played since launch ( and thats how I started to play) and was a blizzard fan boy until this weekend when they permenantly banned him and accused him of selling gold for real world currency. he has spent at least 1152 dollars in subscription fees alone playing that game. there community in terrible and now their policy AND support is terrible.

WOW doesn't have 11 million people, there are 11 million accounts registered. People have multiple accounts and mule accounts all the time. AND on top of this, currently WOW has topped out, and since that claim of 11 million was staked, they've not gained any more, while FFXI has broken even on revenue and is actually nearing 300,000 players. As in, not multiple accounts.

The best items are not in FFXI auction house. In fact, 9/10 items in the auction house for "endgame" (that's level 75) are subpar and there's almost ALWAYS a better item available through either Missions or Rare Monsters.
Relic weapons in FFXI take 1-2 RL years to obtain. I hardly consider that easy to obtain or purchasable from AH. A lot of items also take months and months to get your hands on.
FFXI is challenging to the point of at times it's almost punishing.

People who think FFXI is less challenging are blinded. it was bloody hard but when you done the lvling and quest it was awesome. felt great and people can see that you have done these things with titles and EX gear.
i wasnt a hardcore player and the best item i got was the bard top from assults. worth the time

I like challenging game to have fun and you like quick and easy require little patient to have fun. hey, im a ffxi player and i did play wow too, and one thing people forget is HOW hard FFXI compared to WoW and i reckon thats better and proper strats needed and the whole subjob thing is much better, coz it changed it all u, and PvP is FFXI doesnt play as big part in it then WoW, and also if you take away stats FFXI job will pwn WoW chars and if you debate that pm me and i will explain, all i have to say to that is RDM/nin but yeah i did say if you DONT account stats,

Anyways, i played WoW for the free week trial... i did not enjoy it. Thought the swimming part of it was fun, but the Battles in FFXI require a lot more strategy on the fact that they are a lot longer to take one monster down. WoW i dunno, felt to colorful... pink and purple don't make good skin tones.... or scenery. To whom their own though. It is all a matter of like or dislike, deal with it i say. :3

Im guessing most of you completely missed the debate here. WoW imo has much more options and is more challenging than FFXI. Yeah, the races are played exactly the same such as rogues and thieves, white mages and priests, etc but in FFXI its too easy to obtain the best gear for each class as in WoW you have to do multiple instances to gather the best of gear and most of the best stuff in those instances have anywhere from 0-12% drop chance between 10/25 people going for that item. @Megazerox336 That is extremely true. As much as I loved the game, I spent the majority of my time doing quests for gear, completing prerequisite quests gear, running about trying to obtain items for gear, doing things to get gil for gear, or doing things that allow me to gain gil for gear faster.
Sure, physically using the AH is easy, and looking up quests is easy, but in practice it takes a LOT work, and I imagine a lot more work and a lot more challenging work than WoW will ever dare offer.

idk wat ur smoking but ffxi is one of the hardest games ive ever played and i love it for that. any blizzard game ive ever played i was a fuckin pro within a month, diablo 2, starcraft, even WoW.... but uh ffxi has alot more shit to do and alot more content than WoW. ask any ffxi player if they r done everything in the game and r waiting for the next expansion or patch there is no one. ask anyone in WoW the same thing and it will prolly be anyone with a lvl 80 char

And another thing just cuz you seem to have a big mouth. You havent given a valid reason either as to why WOW is better. Now i have a lv. 73 lock and a lv 72 deathknight on WOW. And i have a lv 20 character on FFXI. So i know what im talking about. And as far as there being more ppl on WOW its becuz its easier access and an easy play. WOW costs more. I think you need to relook at your facts. Just because you can get a party easier in WOW doesnt make it better and because WOW has more people doesnt mean its better either. In FFXI it takes so long to get a party because that game is based off making friends. And as far as PvP is concerned. To me its over rated. FFXI is much much better then WOW. There is always something to do, always. And gear isnt everything. Besides at least the ppl that play FFXI have the time to help low lvls.

about half as many ppl play now as in 04 but theres still between 1.5k-2k people on each server at any given time but usually peaks out when the japanese players log on.

I don't play WoW, but have nothing against it, but comparing the two is like comparing 4x4 trucks vs. sports cars in different environments. The car will get nowhere in the mud while the truck will be slower on pavement, (Just an analogy, I don't need replies stating how it could differ in certain circumstances.) A casual gamer may prefer WoW due to not needing a group, not waiting means faster progress. WoW has a huge aim at PvP, where FFXI is more about co-op; it's about what YOU want from it.

to figure out the way to make it work for you. It doesn't take a lot of effort, just a bit of research. He must have been terrible at the game if he believes that all the best gear can be bought, because that's far from true. If after that long he still hadn't passed lvl 70, he hadn't actually done any of the 'real' game content. It sounds to me more like he had a grudge against the game than a solid opinion. I suspect he couldn't beat Maat as RDM and quit...wouldn't be the first.

Your opinions were actually explained which gives them a lot more merit. FF has always been designed with co-op in mind, and moving to a MMO was an opportunity for them to put that in a new perspective which I think was done well. You said 'sit around waiting' which I disagree with. You can a) find things to do while you wait. b) take the initiative to put together the group yourself. The economy on it works like a real one, supply and demand, there's lots of ways to make money, you just have...

Played both games for long enough to say my thoughts on both FFXI: BLM 75 RDM 75, WoW:80 Rogue, 80 Mage, 80 Shaman. Both games have things I like better than the other but I definite liked FFXI better for preforming anything that required a group, it just went a lot smoother.
Biggest things I didn't like was deleveling, not being able to do much solo, much harder to acquire money in game which never much interested me that much, I just farmed it for gear.

Wow seems fun and fine and all. But I grew up playing MMO's like UO and EQ. Those MMO's were hardcore RPG's. Earing everything and building a community were key to everything.
FFXI feels more like an MMO should to me. Not saying WOW is bad, but its just too casual for real gamers, that's all. Not enough challenge or variety.

i soloed my way to lvl 70 Red mage subbing ninja or dancer as well as having my own AI partner with me as well
on rare occasions i subbed Bstmaster with an AI partner look at that a 3-man party i took out "Tough" to "VT" mobs often like that and helped me cap my skills

Here is the bottom line; WoW is very easy to play, thus 12million ppl can handle it, FFXI is true RPG. Old school rpg made you earn stuff. You have to work for the stuff u get.
