My reality check is that I write REAL? on my the top of my hand and throughout the day as I see the word, I tap my palm 3 times. If I was in a dream, my finger would go through my palm!
I don't have a watch (I hate watches... >_>) I usually check my phone in RL. I once tried getting my phone from my pocket in a dream...but it was gone... and then I pulled out a totally different phone, and when I tried to touch it it was gone again... well, obviously it was a dream! But I can annoy myself so, so much when such things happen. Once I had to go to the toilet, but every time new pants appeared under my old ones >_> and even if I tried to pee trough them I couldn't! So frustrating!!
For my reality check, I hold my nose and try to breathe in. In my actual sleeping body, my nose isn't plugged and I can still breathe. I think... WTF. lol But I find it hard to do things like look at my hand or the time or something mostly because I either forget to, or when I do, I think that everything checks out ok. Like, yea, I remember having an octopus tentacle there!!! I think that the logic center of the brain shuts down when you dream. xD
@AvalosNation Yea indeed... in dreams everything seems so rational and normal... and you simply don't think of checking if its real or not... I once dreamt of rowing in a ventilation shaft, in a river of gold... (long story, long story :)) that cannot be called "normal" lol! But still it felt SO real! :O
how do i need to think in dreams? i mean.. seriously, when i'm dreaming, i can't think like, okay let's count some fingers or something? wtf huh? help;!
@Rybread34 LMAO i got the same problem, i always think in my dream why i run slower when i want to go faster. very weird. why can't i think in dreams how i think in real life..
the simplest of ways to check if you are dreaming is to pinch yourself. if it doesnt hurt then you are most likely dreaming. if this is the case, you can try to pinch your balls to really check. works for me.
@balluxen1 yeah but to effectively use reality checks you must do them when your not dreaming, and I'd rather not pinch my balls during the day. Or pinch myself at all. that just associates dream signs with pain and would probably discourage my dreaming self.
@balluxen1 Well I haven't had a lucid dream yet but I read that that rarely works. And it must not work for everyone cause for Steven Laberge, it just provides a satisfying sensation of a pinch.
nice technique. but i I always do something like that:
I go to some unknown guy, and I am asking him: "hi, is it my dream ? or is it the real world?" and it works everytime ;d and soryy for bad english :( ... ;p

This is a great series. One of my very good friends experienced lucid dreaming about his crazy experiences in college (he graduated on time, of course. lol lol).
Once I dreamt that I was in a strange city and my friends were with me but they didn't recognize me.. It was very frustrating and I just knew that it's a dream.. So I did a reality check.. I saw a digital clock on a wall somewhere and at first it was 7 o clock and after I watched it again it was 12 o clock.. I was very happy because I suddenly realized that it really was a dream.. but sadly I became way too excited about it and I lost the lucidity in the moment I realized that I'm dreaming. :S:D
i would use my hands for my reality check because in your dream you may not have your watch and make up a rational reason why you dont have your watch but with hands thre is no reason that one finger is cut or not there
@bestbeatdownever ya but the basis of the watch techniques effectively is the same reason the hand technique is unreliable (2 some, sometimes). Wat u expect 2 happen will happen in a dream. So the same way u expect the watch 2 display a new time, u expect yourself 2 have five fingers. Of course u are usually expecting the opposite when sceptical, but 4 some it doesnt work at all. The cool thing about the watch is u can use it symbolically. ie: im going somewhere and I need to know wat time it is
If doing the spinning test, and you do twice a 180 degree spin, and you don't come back to where the beginning point was, then, you're dreaming. Or maybe you experience something strange. For example, I once did it, and when I started spinning, I stoped still in the air for a moment, and after that, like if I was on some rusty axis, I started to spin slowly.
As for reality checks, I think, spinning on your heel is a good way. In Paul Tholey's and Kaleb Utecht's book, - the Schöpferische Träumen - it says, that do a 180 degree spin on your heel, but I think spinning continously is good too.
i wonder if we could use a 3D editor on our computers to design our perfect place and rite about it and look at it all day till we can lucid dream in it =D
so thats what its called, reality check, i thought i made that up, one my lucid dreams, i was washing my hands, and i looked at them, and i realize idk how but i was lucid dreaming, but i got so happy that i noticed i was sleeping i woke up :[. another one was i looked at a mirror, and some how i noticed. so i hope this can help people out to notice your dreaming and over all achieve lucidity.
I have had a bad expirience with mirrors when I had a lucid dream. I was in my room and I casually looked in my mirror, to find a horribly distorted monster face of my own looking back at me. It was sooo creepy. I woke with a start.
I once dreamt of a mirror too. What surprises me as that it mimicked my movements and eventually it became dark. It started having red eyes with a sinister laugh...

What happens if you ask a dream character if you are in a dream?......
The character in your dream grows long claws and rips your face off and proceeds to eat your entire head, you feel the pressure of its jaws slowly crush your skull and your vision turns red.....just before you wake up.
One time, I asked for the bathroom, and the character say "that way, but be sure you are not sleeping", at first I don't understand, but in the middle of the way, I understood, "better wake up and go home's bathroom" :P
Why to test reality if you already have feeling you're in a dream? If the test goes negative, you'll conclude you're not dreaming and fail to dream consciously [it happenned to me many times]. The method with a watch doesn't work for me sometimes, because my mind is contradictory and even if I'm telling myself there will be different hour, still some part of my mind "knows" that there is the same hour as before and forces it to appear. It works the same way for doors and what's behind them.
i always look at my right hand and count the fingers as a reality check, works every time. in my dreams, new fingers usually grow out of my hand when i reach the fifth one :)
imagine how scared he would be if while demonstrating he saw that his clock changed to 3 o clock?

@Miister00 Try counting to 100 in your head and then do reality checks to see if you are dreaming, then repeat this a few times.
It actually worked for on two occasions, and it's probably the simplest technique.

Umm, no. It depends how conscious you are in the dream. If not very, they will deny it, if fully, you won't even need to ask them.

Would it be possible for me to touch my hair as a reality check? I've got dreads :p
Also, dont you have to be able to become a little bit lucid to be able to do this reality check, or is it supposed to become on auto?
