Jim Kelly, a Dundee musician, was one of the Honeybus guitarists. As I was around at the time, I can assure you those guys weren't interested in politics, being intelligent. Lorriane Wilson's book "Take it to the Bridge" mentions Jim and all that was going on then. It's a good insight into what was going on then, and all the characters Jim Kelly was involved with. A great read. However sad, I also keep remembering the commercial. It's like equating Michael Fish with the storm he said wouldn't.
why do muppets keep bringing politics into music..but as its been done...with the sh*t going down with the eu we need a maggie back...she had more balls than any male politition has shown since...this lot of tossers we have now will sell us out without any thought of asking our opinion?...
Hows the old saying go, never has so much, been owed by so many, to so few, think someone had foresight here, i guess he was talking about modern banking under B LIAR & THATCHER. Great post m8 tnx for leting us hear this.
It's a good song. However, I think they have better IMO. I definitely think it's weird that they're thought of as a one hit wonder because of this song.
Thats what I love about youtube, you log on to listen to a golden oldie to escape for a little while the grim reality of life in Britain today, to reminisce about simpler perhaps for some of us, happier times and BANG you get dragged back to reality by the comments column.
I thought this song was more famous than people talking about some bread or a bird or fat girls. I'm really sad most of you remember this song by a commercial!
The bread was shocking ...tasteless chemicals bound into in a sponge of sewer weaved, lattice worked nonsense...Nimble? I think not!....But what a great song
nice song, but there's one Maggie I'd definately let go, none other than that spawn of Satan, Thatcher the Snatcher, who I wish had flied like a bird and kept on flying up into the hemisphere and then infinity and beyond, so much suffering would have been spared, oh if only tee hee hee
@insanityrulestheday Rubbish you mean Blair and Brown were saviours? They bankrupted the country. Laurel and Hardy could have done better. Never in history has there been such bad politicians. Complete wasters. Maggie would have elbowed them out of the way and we would not be suffering today. Bah humbug!!
@TheDavidjoy You mean the T/B (Thatcher/Blair) virus which I and many other decent hard working people suffered from for the past 30 years. These CHARLATANs are ONE and the SAME BREED, in other words BLAIR was a TORY dressed up as another DOCTRINE, pretending to be a LABOUR MAN. These SPAWNS OF SATAN between completely destroyed DECENT hard-working peoples LIFES via their incompetent devolved legislation. I hope they ROT in HELL for all ETERNITY
@sue2208 Thank you so much , to be honest i dont have a choice because my little girl constantly wants to listen to hers an grampas song haha its lovely to know she thinks of him xxx
Maggie was quite fat when they put her into the balloon. She was fed a diet of lame white bread and not allowed to come down until she had lost weight.
Almost pastoral in its beauty and simplicity. Not heard on oldies radio as often as it should be (and I listen to a lot of it. Lovely song. Thanks for posting it.
Honeybus ~ Top Of The Pops ~ April 1968. Blast the BBC for scrubbing the tapes!. The only footage of Honeybus on the net is of them messing around on a boat to this music.
i remember listening to this record while i was waiting in a cafe while my Velocette Thruxton was being made ready for me to ride away, still sounds good lots of memories
@hufschmidguitars1 Thats strange, i was listening to this record on the way from work last night and i thought how nice the oboe sounds. Say hello to your mum and tell her Mick from Derby thinks she is very talented. Great record!
I wa s alittle too young to have been a hippie but the world would be a better place if they had lasted, it must have been awesome to have been a part of that era, even now the singles of 68 have a very special place in my life and have probably made me the person that I am. Thank you.
Great record, sadly recorded on "dirty tape". If you listen with headphones to a cd track of this song you hear all kinds of sounds "leaking" from other tracks. No one ever bothered to "clean it up". What a shame for such a pretty song.
I love this song,, my gran used to sing it to me when she pushed me on the swings when i was little. Miss you gran and its not even been a month yet :( xx
What a neat song! Thanks to hrpman for sharing it! There were so many songs that we didn't get to enjoy back in the States and this is one of them! Thank you for posting this!
I don't remember seeing them on Crackerjack (although I grew up in England) , but I loved this song at the time - such a sweet melody, and that woodwind solo (clarinet or cor anglais?) - totally memorable song...
sorry is the other way around. i think equipe 84 made a cover of this song.. but i am not sure because usually everybody try to copy italians. the best in design, fashion and architecture.. even a messican singer called yuri copied all the italian artist... click yuri and you will see all the fighting between some timewasters.
@Marty1fatbstard Sheer marketing genius though. Sell half the bread for twice the price. Nobody dieting would ever think of just eating half the amount of bread they usually ate of course.
@Marty1fatbstard Yes, but great for using as toilet paper if you were running short, or for putting over a comb and buzzing out the latest tune of the day. And yes, the bird was fit !!
@Marty1fatbstard Agree with you Marty. Actually the "fit bird" in the ballon, crashed in that ballon leaving her paraylsed sadly. Although not on that take
Oh, that reminds me of a holiday in El Arenal (Mallorca) in 1969. I played that song again and again on a jukebox in a small bar. By the way I wonder how Mary from Scotland is doin' today...
Wonderful single, badly hit by the band's main man Dello quitting while it was still on the UK chart - and later sadly tainted by that bloody bread advert.
Great song...my cat's name is Maggie :o)

There is no known footage of the Honeybus performing this song in British & German archives however it may reside in Scandinavian archives.
The BBC of course destroyed over 95% of TOTP footage from the '60s including all the Honeybus appearances.
