so your setting one cyl at a time when you do a valve set? its way faster just to find 1 or 6 tdc. when you find 1 tdc you can set 1 intake exhaust 2 intake 3 exhaust 4 intake and 5 exhaust. rotate engine to 6 tdc then set the rest of the valves. works on almost all i6 diesels
@81ramcharger You are right. I guess it depends on your memory, I can't remember that thing for the life of me, but the method in the video works on anything and is easy to remember. Ideally you could just write what you said under the hood or something. One thing most people don't realize is how far off of TDC they can be and still be good to go at setting valves. That applies to your method and mine. Watching valve overlap to find TDC is plenty accurate for setting valves.
@890buba Yeah everything is based on #1, but remember that there are 2 phases of #1 so it could be on compression/power or exhaust/intake. If the valves are tight when you wiggle them then it is on compression/power, if they are loose then exhaust/instake. #6 is paired with #1 so it will be on the opposite phase, as in, when #1 is on C/P, #6 is on E/I.
Dam this saves a lot of time. I was wondering in your demo. Would you stop the moment the intake starts to move. And would counter turning back , then turning untill the intake just starts would be ok. I notice you didn't do this and said the adjustment can be made or dose it matter after the intake move's, so long as you don't go to far. Just need clearification.
@TheWaterman1000 Axidaias is right this is by far the easiest way for beginners to adjust valves. Just remember 15 is to young 36 is too old and 24 is just right. if you stack the firing order it looks like this.

1and6 are companions, 5and2 are companions and 3and4 are companions
Companions are two pistons that are at top dead center at the same time but one is on the compression stroke and the other one is in overlap.
@TheWaterman1000 Overlap is the point in time when both valves are open at the same time to purge out the cylinder of spent gasses before the intake cycle. You only want to adjust the valves that are on the compression stroke.

Thank make sence.

so if the timing mark is at TDC that means cylinder #1?

@TheWaterman1000 As long as the exhaust is closing and the intake is opening, your fine. This method provides a TON of leeway.

This is great! Sure would be nice to have this process spelled out in a step-by-step tutorial from start to finish for us newbies.

does it work on V engines
tractormanAllis 1 year ago
@tractormanAllis Yes just cut the firing order in half and stack them, always works.
