Agreed. The problem is AIGLX is not supported on my ATI mobility card (AFAIK), so I have to live with XGL on my laptop.

Ubuntu Xgl with Emerald (or what it was called) seems much slower then this.

It depends on your machine, I have now Ubuntu Edgy Eft + XGL + Beryl (Emerald is Beryl's theme manager) on a Dual Core 2GHz, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility X1600 and the performance is very smooth and pleasant
