respect to you vegans :-) you leave to us meat-eaters more food, more delicious aromatic juicy mouthwatering KFC chicken and pressure-fried crispy chicken wings....
I just got done making the chickpea tuna..i didn't have vegan mayo ,so i used some earth balance lol I also added some lime..I love it! i was looking for something like this before i was vegan i use to eat tuna sandwiches all the time lol This is soo good thanks for the receipe :D
Excellent presentation. We all know the suits jumped on the health food bandwagon and created the 'certified organic' labeling game to send prices through the roof and control & limit access to market.Games they play w the concept of IP rights - i.e. copyright/trademark/patent on the names of ingredients in nature they co-opt into drugs etc. More geeks need to hit the net and expose the fraud and give away the recipes etc. like eco vegan gal does. FDA and such are greed gatekeepers!
Great post, so true! Love the suggestions, and you included some of my favorites. I added a response post showing a Chickpea (mock tuna) Salad and Quinoa veggies dish. Thanks for sharing the health and wellbeing.
I hate to be rude, but the stupidity in the comments is too much. The cost she is talking about is PER SERVING. Have you ever thought about the cost of 1 slice of bread, etc? She even says that a good coconut milk ice cream is about $4-6, serving size on one of those containers is about 4, there you go, about $1.50.
Thank goodness for this video... Just starting my vegan diet and was worried about the cost. I have a budget of about $100/mo for groceries, $120 tops. I rarely could afford grocery meat anyway, and used to get $3 McDonalds meals after class because I thought it was thrifty. After educating myself about the health benefits and watching some disturbing things about factory farming I decided to make the switch. I compiled a vegan shopping list to compare the price, and estimate it'll cost the same
I love your info. I am looking forward to learning more about becoming a vegan. I am excited about this. I have been trying for some years, but I haven't been able to keep up with the eating happen. So if you can guide me into it, Im willing to be a student.
In the beginning tell how you get the prices, this would be a good lesson for most people to read the labels for servings. Also I don't think you've seen "around the world" because most places don't have somethingt that compares to a Kroger let alone Trader Joe's or Whole Foods which don't exist in many places in the US. The specialty vegan products don't exist in most places. Great video just not well researched.
It looks like most of the commenters don't know how to take tips from someone that already looks great, and doesn't look worried about carbs and protein etc etc etc....
I am starting to become vegan I am a senior in high school so I live with my meat loving family. What are some meals I could make with things meat lovers buy.
@lauraetlicorice I brought this up with my children's pediatrician as they areey new to veg lifestyle. Just be sure most of what you get in is protien. This is easy, using tofu, faux meat, beans and nuts. Eat the same way you would if you were a meat eater, just replace the meat with high protein replacements. Peta's website has lots ofgreat recipes and advice. Hope I helped, good luck!
Sadly, I have recently read that earthbalance margarine, may be ecologically problematic as it uses palm oil. Palm oil plantations are the major source of deforestation in southeast asia!!!
I'm eating mostly vegan, cereal is kashi go lean crunch with silk soymilk, lunch is a smoothie made with fruit, whey protein and orange juice, snacks are raisins and almonds, but... yeah... i kinda need my tuna... sorry... ._. dinner is canned tuna because of it's high protein and i can't find any alternatives with high protein and low carbs...
I have a question, won't these meals combined ex. oatmeal, flour tortilla wrap, and quinoa. Isn't that a lot of carbs in a day? I am sorry if i am mistaken, i am fairly new to vegan lifestyle and i am "torn" between low-fat vegan lifestyle or low-carb. I don't want to gain weight :? Answers/tips are greatly appreciated n_n
Whitney, you're a lifesaver, doll! I am so glad that I came across your channel and website! I am still a newbie to the vegan community, and since I have a husband that is not vegan, it has been really difficult trying to find the balance both on the daily meal menus and the money. You've taken a world of stress off my shoulders, and after watching this video, I threw together my shopping list for tomorrow in less than a quarter of the time it usually takes me! Thanks & keep up the good work!
Hey everyone, i have a new Website about the Vegan Lifestyle. I'm establishing a new vegan community to share blogs, art work or anything else important to the vegan life style.
@CastinCouchnCatwalk My opinions are for the public if I choose so. I'll put them where I want. People were ment to eat meat and I intend to do so until I die. This is how I think about it. Would some animals eat you and not even think about it? Yes. I'm gonna do the same.
@mikefulcher03AUG2000 Great and that's your opinion. People on a video about VEGAN FOOD aren't necessarily going to agree with you. So it's obvious your intention to come here was based off starting shit so go find a forum for meat eaters or something. We don't want arguments here.
@CastinCouchnCatwalk I turned a vegetarian once. She thanked me the next time I saw her. Hamburgers are amazing. What was I "hoping to acheive"? I don't know, open your eyes and your stomachs alittle bit. You can still live a full and happy life with some meat in your diet. Don't think of eating meat as murder, it's not, think of it as population control.
@mellamosean Farms do take care of the population by breeding for slaughter. On another note. States give a number of hunting tags to hunters each year for the allowed numbers of those animals to be taken. If not, those animals populations could grow to large for the natural food around them to survive in winter seasons. That causes many animals to die of starvation because there are too many of them and they eat the food too fast.
And what percentage of meat consumption do animals hunted for the purpose of population control make up? Not enough to even talk about. Meat consumption is not about population control. It's about eating meat. Their aren't real arguments for meat consumption. But if meat eaters believe an animal's life is not worth its taste, only they can make that judgement for themselves.
@mellamosean In states with snowy winters it does make a big difference with the larger animals. Predatory animals in some states is on a decline because of the human population. In those areas the animals that they would prey on live longer and the herds grow larger. States keep track of these hunted animals and issue hunting tags accordingly. I didn't say eating meat is population control, it's human nature. We are omnivores.
"Don't think of eating meat as murder, it's not, think of it as population control."
That's actually exactly what you said. Maybe you did't mean it seriously. Fine. Human nature is meaningless we regularly transcend the nature paradigm. In fact, that's what makes us so unique---so as it turns out, that not a real defense. What would be a defense is if we would all become extremely malnourished on vegetarian diets. But in the 21st century west, that's not the case.
I've read often that Tofu is actually not very good for you. It's worth reading into.
I don't eat red meat (I don't like the thought of it nor the taste) and suffer from fatigue and iron deficiency even though I take supplements. I do use milk and butter (so not vegan). I want to know if you are as tired as your eyes look in this video or whether your diet sustains you with enough energy or if you too suffer health wise because of your diet.
@felicitates prices are averaged from Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and a Kroger store in San Francisco, which is a pretty expensive city. Mostly organic as well. Then I found out how many servings were in each container, plus how much was needed for each recipe, and average the price. : )
@EcoVeganGal great video..unfortunately most people do not go by or even check serving sizes in this supersize society! GF people can enjoy the burrito bowl by using corn tortillas. most (not all, check) corn tortillas are typically GF! :-)
I love how people keep saying this is unhealthy. I used to be totally anti-vegan and anti-vegetarian then I found research that I couldn't ignore and looked into it more. Turns out that meat and dairy products are actually responsible for the increase in cancer and heart disease. Research it yourselves and that means places that the dairy company isn't lining their pockets. A good place to start is a documentary called Forks Over Knives. Empower yourselves and learn about health!
See her 10 years later. She looks sick and even more tired than now. Epic Meal Time bust through the door. This one needs bacon strips stat! Muscles Glasses straps her to a bed and force feeds her Fast Food Sushi with extra bacon strips! Wash that shit down with a bottle of Jack, SMART! She is saved. EMT always to the rescue.
I'm from New Zealand and this is my third day being a vegan (yay). I had been thinking about it for maybe a month however and have been searching and searching for vegan cheese, but haven't found any! Is there any way I can make vegan cheese using like rice milk or something? Cheese in one of my favourite foods...
@TheNicoleAndrews congrats! Yes, so many ways to make vegan cheese alternative from practically any nut and even oats. Look for cashew cheese to begin with - that's easy to find and lots of ways to make it.
Make a tahini sauce out of tahini, lemon juice, water to thin it, himalayan salt, garlic powder or fresh garlic. Use as a salad dressing. or as a dip for collard green veggie wraps. You can make a sweet tahini dip with stevia and water. I use honey since im not vegan, add cinnamon or cardamom and dip apples or dates in it for a treat to combat dessert cravings.
You look naturally beautiful and healthy. Do not care about these haters. Why are you haters even watching this video? She is so sweet and helpful and deserves some credit for her creativity and enthusiasm. Thanks for the great tips. you have a lovely presence on camera.
Why do most vegans not eat honey? It has to be the healthiest, the most environmentally friendly, sustainable product in the world. It -as opposed to fruits and vegetables- does not require preservatives, it's produced locally almost everywhere so there is no shipment involved (which means that no fossil fuels are consumed), and its production actually requires preserving the environment and the bees. It's very nutritious and a natural antiseptic. I don't see how anyone can be against it.
@FoetalOuroboros If you got your honey in a grocery store, there is a good chance it came from just about anywhere. American beekeepers are unable to keep up with the demand, so it is imported from other countries. While I do not eat it, I d agree that it has many antixidants and can be very healthy when eaten in moderation. However, unless you are buying from a local beekeeper or organic, you should probably look at the label, some honeys have preservatives added.
Have a quick qestion, have a guy on our rig crew, he has stopped eating meat and all animal products. He has read up on it and has the camp kitchen sorting his food so he will still eat healthy. problem is two weeks into a twenty day shift and he has droped eight kilos. we tease him non stop but i think that he might be getting very sick. is there anything we can feed him to help him.
@shootphotosnotarabs I wrote a post on my website for you - can't put the link here, so visit ecovegangal and you should see it on the front page, or search for "How Vegan Men Can Maintain a Healthy Weight" : )
@EcoVeganGal Yeah i will check that link. he wasnt fat before at all just a big bloke. anyway he is off the rig now and has been diagnosed with anemia. he will be fine. they dont know what happened he ate the stuff he was told to and stuck to it. anyway see how he got on next shift i guess. ta for the link.
@shootphotosnotarabs Tell him to eat some fucking meat, just shove it down his throat, fuck these fucking vegan morons, at least they'll kill themselves off in no time, we won't have to worry about this much longer. A healthy diet consists of MEAT and VEGETABLES, these vegans are just plain shit for brains!
@ebo1338 most vegans I know look far from anorexic - I think that's just a bizarre stereotype. However, some vegans can lose a lot of weight if they don't eat properly or enough food, just like anyone on any type of diet. If you're saying I look anorexic, well, it must be the lighting and angle because I certainly don't in person - I gots lots of "meat" on my bones! : )
Also!: I'm glad someone else sees the yumminess of cayenne in mac and cheese :D sometimes I buy Amy's brand non-dairy mac and cheese and I always season with cayenne.
Sauce: Nut butter (depending on what I feel like, I use peanut, almond, pumpkin seeds), Apple cider vinegar, Tamari, lemon juice, Flax oil, 1/2 tbsp of sesame seeds. (mix it all together and there you go)
Lay down 2 lettuces leafs on the rice paper, put some of the carrot/green mix on top of the lettuce, sprinkle 1 tbsp of hemp seeds. Roll AND VOILA.
full of veggetables and protein! I make like 4 rolls (since you shouldn't over stuff them) for my lunch every day. Always rotate the greens so you dont get bored. And rice papers are so low in calories and cheap. Plus they are see through and so the greens give them that awesome color!
This is one of my favorite recipes that I've been preparing a lot more than I should (when I have a camera i'll record this but for now i just want to share it) it's super easy super fast super simple and you can take it for lunch with ease.
*drum rolls* VEGGIE WRAPS!!!
Ingredients: Carrots, Lettuce, Any leafy green, Rice paper (squares), hemp seeds.
Put the carrots and leafy green in a food processor,
@obrienkl3 the prices are per serving...is that still way off? That would be pretty expensive if so, esp given that these prices are based on San Francisco!
@FoetalOuroboros most bread and pasta does not contain eggs, but occasionally it does. If you're avoiding eggs/vegan, always check ingredients on everything. Bread can also contain honey, milk, or cheese. Pasta is generally safe unless it's made fresh or "egg pasta"
@EcoVeganGal I've found most organic pastas do not, but normal pastas, particularly non-whole grain, often sneak eggs and sometimes dairy ingredients in there :) Another bonus to organic products: with a shorter ingredient list, it's easier to spy a non-vegan ingredient!
I have an fast food eating-out tip, although I'm not sure it's cheap or organic :S but most of Subway's breads are now vegan, with the exception of flatbread and the cheesy bread (the honey oat and wheat have honey, however)
This is really awesome. I've been looking for healthy meals [I'm a Vegetarian transitioning to veganism] for my new diet and exercise routine =) THANK YOU!
Thank you so much! This is perfect for me. I am going to work my way through ALL of these FANTASTIC meals and snacks! :D Added this to my favourites and that book to my wish list! Thanks again.
I don't think Earth Balance is vegan and/or eco-friendly. There is palm oil in the butter and palm oil is distracted from orangutans. And to get to the orangutans, deforestation takes place in order to find them.
@vivalabeavaaa I totally hear you - I have the same concern and I've actually talked to E.B. about that directly. To be honest, I don't remember what they said because it's been a while, so I will re-address it. I personally don't use E.B. (also don't like the plastic) but I think it's a good option for those looking to make the shift and happy it's available - at least factory farms aren't involved, and palm oil is the next step.
@vivalabeavaaa I don't use E.B. simply because I don't like butter, but I completely hear you that the rainforest is being destroyed in some cases with people who are trying to cut out trans fat, which we are finding now that palm oil is worse than trans fat.
@vivalabeavaaa Palm oil is made from a plant, so it is vegan. Quote from E.B: At Earth Balance, we strive to ensure that our sourcing of palm FRUIT OIL is environmentally and socially responsible and not linked to the deforestation of rainforests, the displacement of indigenous peoples or harm to endangered species. We actively support the production of sustainable palm oil as well as organizations that bring attention to the associated environmental and social concerns.
Thanks for the easy meal ideas. You are a great inspiration for the vegan lifestyle not only because you are very beautiful and vibrant, but because you sound very down to earth and not flakey like many vegans come across as. I really liked your video of you going to the various vegan restuarants in Portland and it looked like you were having a blast. Take care and keep feeding that vegan body builder of yours.
@sam92teg thank you! I'm glad to hear I come across as down to earth. : ) Portland was a blast! Robert and I are no longer dating, but we remain great friends and do a ton of projects together.
...I'll no longer label myself, vegan, or aspiring vegan b coz the weight of the lifestyle, coupled w/ a limited budget doesn't pay 4 itself in a positive way. U have good tips/advice, so I'll continue 2 listen 2 your info, but I have 2 be real w/ myself on what I can & can't do. Thank u, Whitney 4 being a constant source of inspiration!
Looks like I picked a bad time 2 demote myself from vegan 2 vegetarian. While what u've said sounds reasonable, the fact is, 4 me it's still 2 costly. Mostly because
I'm hooked on the faux meats that helped me get in2 the vegetarian/vegan thing in the 1st place. The foods r flavorful, but the sodium is "killer" Ultimately I like what I like, but the cost of that indulgence is more than I can afford. Exspense wise, and health wise. When all is said n done, I'll continue 2 be vegan-centric, but...
@pmknight12 I have been experimenting between veg* diets...
after seeing Dr Michael Gregers videos on dairy and eggs, I really question the wisdom in consuming those foods... he looks at the latest nutrition science journals and research study results, very professional
check his site: nutritionfacts . org
or his youtube channel:
user/NutritionFactsOrg
or check my youtube channel page for a link to his channel :)
@pmknight12 I'm not sure about in the US, but in Canada veg-meats are cheaper than real meat...eggs & dairy are realy expensive also. so it's a lot cheaper to go vegan. Don't give up! yes some things may cost more, but overall you will save money. Check out an awesome website Vegancoach. com...they have a lot of WHOLE food recipes, (they really encourage veggie meats to be eaten only occassionally cuz they are so processed) but they have a lot of delish, cheap meals! Hang in there! :)
@terrillcase hmmm, well i guess then meat is also cheaper in the US along with dairy lol...not up here....unless if i remember correctly, you buy the cheaper cuts/quality on sale etc. I know we save a lot of money by not purchasing meat or dairy...cheese is a killer! 600g block is $10. I've heard something about some US groceries being subsidized to be made affordable...but i dont know details...but ya, in BC anyway, its definitely NOT more expensive to eat whole/healthy/veg. :)

@mikefulcher03AUG2000

@Mumsplaymoney Tofu is made of soy and soy is healthy for you. So push off.

Where are you getting these prices? When I buy Rice Milk, its $4.29.
felicitates 3 months ago 13

I'm from New Zealand and this is my third day being a vegan (yay). I had been thinking about it for maybe a month however and have been searching and searching for vegan cheese, but haven't found any! Is there any way I can make vegan cheese using like rice milk or something? Cheese in one of my favourite foods...
TheNicoleAndrews 4 months ago

FoetalOuroboros 5 months ago
@FoetalOuroboros If you got your honey in a grocery store, there is a good chance it came from just about anywhere. American beekeepers are unable to keep up with the demand, so it is imported from other countries. While I do not eat it, I d agree that it has many antixidants and can be very healthy when eaten in moderation. However, unless you are buying from a local beekeeper or organic, you should probably look at the label, some honeys have preservatives added.

Why do vegans look anorexic?
ebo1338 5 months ago
@ebo1338 most vegans I know look far from anorexic - I think that's just a bizarre stereotype. However, some vegans can lose a lot of weight if they don't eat properly or enough food, just like anyone on any type of diet. If you're saying I look anorexic, well, it must be the lighting and angle because I certainly don't in person - I gots lots of "meat" on my bones! : )

There are eggs in bread and in pasta.
FoetalOuroboros 5 months ago
@FoetalOuroboros most bread and pasta does not contain eggs, but occasionally it does. If you're avoiding eggs/vegan, always check ingredients on everything. Bread can also contain honey, milk, or cheese. Pasta is generally safe unless it's made fresh or "egg pasta"
EcoVeganGal 5 months ago
@EcoVeganGal I've found most organic pastas do not, but normal pastas, particularly non-whole grain, often sneak eggs and sometimes dairy ingredients in there :) Another bonus to organic products: with a shorter ingredient list, it's easier to spy a non-vegan ingredient!
I have an fast food eating-out tip, although I'm not sure it's cheap or organic :S but most of Subway's breads are now vegan, with the exception of flatbread and the cheesy bread (the honey oat and wheat have honey, however)

I don't think Earth Balance is vegan and/or eco-friendly. There is palm oil in the butter and palm oil is distracted from orangutans. And to get to the orangutans, deforestation takes place in order to find them.
vivalabeavaaa 5 months ago 2
@vivalabeavaaa I totally hear you - I have the same concern and I've actually talked to E.B. about that directly. To be honest, I don't remember what they said because it's been a while, so I will re-address it. I personally don't use E.B. (also don't like the plastic) but I think it's a good option for those looking to make the shift and happy it's available - at least factory farms aren't involved, and palm oil is the next step.

Sandramuoio 5 months ago
@vivalabeavaaa I don't use E.B. simply because I don't like butter, but I completely hear you that the rainforest is being destroyed in some cases with people who are trying to cut out trans fat, which we are finding now that palm oil is worse than trans fat.
Sandramuoio 5 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@vivalabeavaaa Palm oil is made from a plant, so it is vegan.

When all is said n done, I'll continue 2 be vegan-centric, but...
pmknight12 5 months ago
@pmknight12 I have been experimenting between veg* diets...
after seeing Dr Michael Gregers videos on dairy and eggs, I really question the wisdom in consuming those foods... he looks at the latest nutrition science journals and research study results, very professional

or his youtube channel:

or check my youtube channel page for a link to his channel :)

IglooGirl1 5 months ago
@IglooGirl1 I eat real meat and live in the US not expensive at all for the real stuff!! Have no need for veggie meat!
terrillcase 5 months ago
@terrillcase hmmm, well i guess then meat is also cheaper in the US along with dairy lol...not up here....unless if i remember correctly, you buy the cheaper cuts/quality on sale etc. I know we save a lot of money by not purchasing meat or dairy...cheese is a killer! 600g block is $10. I've heard something about some US groceries being subsidized to be made affordable...but i dont know details...but ya, in BC anyway, its definitely NOT more expensive to eat whole/healthy/veg. :)
