Yes, Johanson knocked out Machen in one round, but anything can happen in a boxing match, especially when a fighter has the kind of right hand that Johanson had. Machen easily went the distance against Liston. Quarry was exceptional, but the Klitchkos would have beaten him. As a matter of fact, they would have beaten Ali and all the others too. We don't want to admit that because we want to believe that American heavies are the best. Not any more. The times, they are a changing.
@emoran001 You shouldn't smoke so much of that stuff. It's never to late to get treatment for your blatant drug abuse. Saying that any of the Klitchkos could beat Ali, or a prime Foreman , Liston, or Holmes is beyond insane.
@tonyrome068 That was a strange statement. Quarry was hat bad? The man who beat Patterson, Spencer, Mathis, Lyle, Shavers, and Mac Foster? The man who got the better of Foreman in a sparring session? Please get some treatment.
@emoran001 None of the aforementioned had any real skills either, they were club fighters and all had one thing in common. They were all victims of ALI! They all probably received medical treatment afterwards also!
@tonyrome068 Are you aware that Lyle was beating Ali going into the eleventh round? Or that Shavers hurt Ali several times and the fight was very close? So close that some people think the fight should have been a draw! Shavers demolished Norton and almost knocked Holmes out! And Quarry destroyed Shavers in less than a round! Quarry couldn't beat Ali or Fraiser, that's true. He lacked the proper management for much of his career and he was smaller than the other heavies. # 3 in the world WOW!
Quarry was a superb heavyweight who reached his prime with two EXTRAORDINARY heavies: Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Jerry could beat almost everybody in the division, but not these two; and not for lack of trying. Quarry fought Ali and Frazier twice each, losing both times; though Quarry's courage and toughness were such that he was upright and arguing with the referees. Quarry was such a skilled and powerful counterpuncher that George Foreman admitted avoiding him:) --
Ingemar Johanson knocked out Eddie Machon in one round. George Chuvalo knocked out Quarry .quarry was totally over rated .Either klitchko would have destroyed him really easily .He was a contender a smallish game heavyweight .
@mow1717 comments "Quarry got smashed...case closed", you'd think Quarry was a Tomato can. Unappreciated, Quarry did KO'd #3 rated Shavers, & Shavers destroyed Norton. Quarry took apart 19-0, #1 rated Ron Lyle. Fraizer often quoted that his Denver, CO stablemate (Lyle) has too much power for me ('73-76).
Quarry was the best white HW since Marciano, Klitsckos included. Turned pro before he was 20, avgd. a fight a fortnight up to this one in 1966. Was still only 25 first time with Ali, by which time he'd faced Spencer, Matthis, Ellis, Patterson, Mac Foster, Chuvalo and Frazier. Machen looks like the typival HW pre-Ali, ie. slow on his feet. His experience obviously told on the kid. You'd have thought he would be easy meat for Liston, but in fact went the distance. Shock KO defeat to Johannson.
@mow1717 quarry/frazier I - close and great fight before the cut. quarry/ali I- close non-fight before the cut. 2nd fight with each was after he got fat and pathetic, same with his fight w/ norton (which he took on 2 weeks' notice)
Sad that Machen spent years suffering from mental illness, before and after this fight. In 1972, he sleepwalked out his second storey bedroom window and hit his driveway, dead at a young age. Hard to think of a worse way to die accidentally.
quarry boxes, jabs and uses the ring.if he kept at this style he would have avoided the heavy beatings that came later in his career.he had a good, fast hard jab.pity he seldom used it
young quarry, what a great, slippery, dangerous small heavy wieght.dude could EXPLODE on anybody anytime.watch this great agility, reflex, skill at about 5;25...freakin text book good.
@Sonnyboyx2 Jerry never had skills, if you compare him with Joe Louis, Ali, even Jimmy Ellis! They were boxers and all Jerry was at his best was a slugger like Fraizer1
I personally feel peak for peak Machen would still have won. Machen's best years were in the late 50s early 60s. So by this stage he was not his best self.
This is an embarrassing loss for Jerry, Machen was a washed-up drug addict by this point. In his prime Eddie Beats him easily

Quarry should have been a Cruiserweight. He didn't have the size to go against top Heavyweights.

i know machen won the fight but seeing this for the first time i see no machen domination. I gave quarry both rounds.

Good match, but neither were prime.
Machen's experience was better here, with Quarry at just 187.
Machen was clearly better earlier in his career. Underrated guy, no doubt.
But Quarry had a huge upside to come.
He needed this loss to eventually become a better fighter than Machen had ever been.

young Jerry Quarry more than held his own against the more experienced Machen, its a pity we dont have the full-fight to view

Jerry was inexperianced at this time. Later on he wouldve handled Machen IMO.

Quarry 187, Machen 193.
Very early on for Quarry, who moved better of the two. Machen looked more skilled, but was very flat-footed.
Pretty even. Thanks.
