daydream might be more consistent, but goo's high points exceed it - this song an easy case in point. wish on this version they had tamed the ending though. the slow breakdown and dynamic flux on the lp version is gorgeous. get it if you haven't heard...
it seems like they get criticized for being more rock-like for the newer stuff, but the very early songs simply aren't as personal as what they've got now. albums like daydream nation and thousand leaves kind of straddle the border...
If I could do it all over again, I would! But, sooo much Better! When I was Young, I was Young! But, why is youth wasted on the young? I could do it so much better now!
I saw them open for Neil Young and his Crazy Horse gang in SF, when they were spacey kids. They rocked then and they rock now. That sound has it's own sense of time.
doooood, you guys sound so silly talking about who should like this and who likes it more.... I like it more than all of you cause it's the only band I listen to so there I win... now listen to how dumb that sounds... just enjoy bitches.
okay so im only 15, i've liked the band for about two years, i own alot of their albums and love them more than any band bar Radiohead. am i less of a fan than you because i came late?
Absolutely not - who chooses what year they're born? I envy you cos you've got even more music to choose from then those of us did who were around when Sonic Youth was current. However, there is something a bit special about being there with these guys as a soundtrack to life at the same time as it was released and in the then alternative charts. Fans of the time helped to make them 'happen' by recognising their talent during their most creative periods. Kid, without you good music would die.
sy started off as a no wave band, and i bet on these straw-man arguments that those original fans are the one's you're now classifying as faking intellectual hipsters.
SY is the defacto house band of wanskter Brooklyn hipsters who move to New York from the Midwest and elsewhere by the busload.. The no wave scene and scenesters you reference were artists, were NYC downtowners in the 80s.. They are a long cry from nasally losers from Iowa who live Williamsburgh.
heh, and you can pull out a list of statistical data to prove this nonsense and color me wrong, because i never realized there was no such thing as an indigenous brooklyn hipster.
no way they toured with nirvana from back in the day, cool,I knew that they were one of the bands to influence them, never knew they went on tour with them, wish i could've been there to watch them both live!
if I had seen that multi bomb pack of sonic youth, nirvana and dinosaur jr at once then, i would have died or fucking gotten a heart attack beacuse of happiness
Really? Smashing Pumpkins sucks really bad, and solo Chris Cornell is not far behind. Dinosaur Jr has some ok material but I wouldn't go crazy for them. I would have seen Iggy and Sonic Youth and gotten the hell out of there.
@grzesieksz well 3 years ago is saw sonic youth dinosaur jr smashing pumpkins( even though they sucked that night) iggy pop and chris cornell at the same festival. oh an also the gutter twins (mark lennagan)
i think that sonic youth are best when they experiment with there instraments eg like getting some random metal bar and using it on their strings or when the drummer uses a rattle as 1 of his drum sticks
i think it kinda depends - if you play guitar day dream nation and sister - but if you just listen to music get dirty and goo - they are very ear friendly - me - i love all of it
Hey dudes - If you're going to listen to Sonic Youth, then you've got to start with the Sister recordings. It blows everything else they've ever done away.
Most will tell you dirty, goo, or sister because they are supposedly their most poppy and therefore accessible albums. For once I am going to agree with a pitchfork media review and say that Daydream Nation is not only their best album, it is there most accessible although it may not appear so. Nothing beats the high I get from the opening licks of Teen Age Riot. Nothing.
Goo is solid, with a few major highlights, but it's really not on the same level as Sister, Daydream Nation, or Dirty (I've heard bits and pieces of Murray Street and Sonic Nurse, but I haven't had the chance fully digest either). That being said, just because an album is an act's best, doesn't necessarily mean that it makes the best introduction for the uninitiated.
Goo isn't a terrible place to start. It's relatively accessible but I wouldn't delay in picking up some more of their work shortly thereafter. I think that Dirty is probably their best overall, and it also has some serious bite. Sister probably ranks second in that category. For a while I couldn't decide which was better between Sister and Daydream. I think that Daydream has the edge because the bookends are just so brilliant, but I think that Sister can be fully appreciated more quickly.
I started with Daydream Nation. Not the best way to start. If you like stuff like Nirvana or even Dinosaur Jr. for that matter, Dirty is what you should start with. Then Go Deeper. Just my 2 cents.
@Alienacionglobal ok if you still have the same email account you had a year ago and still check it, my answer is this, the same order as me, the best example of SY at their " peak" maybe, dirty, yeah id go dirty first, hope this helps, will
Though I love Nirvana more than I can possibly express, what really puts the Sonics above them for me is the sort of ethereal atmosphere and power their music delivers directly to yr. skull.Though thhey abide by the same punk ethos, Sonic Yotuh brings a whole other facet to the table.
their music resides in, a surrealistic world that Nirvana (apparently not so aptly named) never really transcended to. But by God, you gotta love Nirvana. still
hahahaha I'm so drunkright now God this song makes me want to write music. Though I can never be as good as sonic youth, though us, the legions of fans, can never be as good as SY, we can still share the experience of expression with them. Go out and make your own tunings and brake your strings and fuck shit up. Let's start a revolution.
I love nirvana but why when yuo bring them up on the internet it has to turn into some stupid debate about why they're better than whoever... who cares they were an amazing band, but they weren't the only amazing band... Wat about Jesus Lizard or this band here SY... just as good on a different sound spectrum. I say this knowing that IN Utero is my favorite album of all time.
Exactly. Like people want this music to come back right now. It's not gonna happen if everyone keeps listening to the same thing. Go out and find what's good in the underground right now, not indie cause that's a label now. But i guarantee you htere are some nirvana's and sonic youths and brainiacs in our midst right now and we're missing it.
Sonic Youth kicks Nirvana Straight in the ass, but then Nirvana kicks Sonic Youth Straight in the ass. Then they decide that fighting over who's better is stupid, so they both go up and kick Guns N' Roses ass to the curb! Long Live Nirvana and Sonic Youth!
nailed it right on the head. pixies are at the top of the food chain. followed by sonic youth, dino jr, primus, nirvana, rhcp, smashing pumpkins.. the next wave was blink 182, green day, mest, zebrahead, goldfinger. that's about the time either a) i got old and startd to think todays music pretty much sucks or b) music started sucking.
That is what I love about Nirvana. They are equal parts SY and Melvins, Vaselines, Germs, Pixies, Black Flag, Missions Of Burma, Daniel Johnston, Lead Belly, sex pistols, and a whole ton of other bands. They did such a great job of taking all these bands and turning them into one incredible experience. Kurt, Krist, and Dave did something that will sadly never be replicated, if the Foo Fighters latest release is any sign.
imo although the bands were tied closely for most of the time the music styles of both are quite different. you can't compare oranges and apples ;) love both bands ever!
