He told me you should do what you love to do and if you can make a career out of it, then you should. I know in some cases hobbies should be separate from careers, I have to say that if you love doing something, and there's a job out their pertaining to that hobby, then you should hope for the best and try and make a career out of it.
My neighbor told me that he'd go to work and he would hear co-workers and numerous other people always complaining about how they hated their job or wish they could do something else. And he told me that he felt really bad for them because even if their job was bringing in the money, how awful it must be to spend countless hours towards something you hate. His job was hard and he spent entire days sometimes working, but in the end, he was happy with what he was doing.
A couple months back, I was talking with one of my neighbor's dad who recently lost his job and we were talking about what I want to do and what I could look into and he told me something that really made me think about this. He's a photographer and that's what he did for a living. He took pictures for a newspaper and it's what he loved to do. I enjoy acting and I think it would be incredible if I could make a living out of it.
If a person can find a reliable job that ties in their interest(s) with their career, then they should go for it. In my case, I love music. I've been playing guitar for twelve years, piano for two, and I dabble in banjo and a few other things. I'm currently working towards getting my business degree so I can have the sense to run my own music label to record my own music, and hopefully sign others in the future. There is always a way to make your life goals happen, and everyone should try =]
I'm still young, but my plans for the future involve things I love to do. I want to be a writer, and I have loved writing and making up stories before I could even write. Your comment about keeping hobbies and work separate sounds a little silly to me. I mean, I guess I could understand, but the thing is, if you kept your hobby away, what would be your job? Hobbies are things you love, and if you don't love your job, regular life can be stressful. I think we should love every aspect of our life.
@monistarr81 Hobbies are things you do just for fun -- it could be a sport, or something craft related...or collecting things....just anything you do for fun and stress relief. :)
I feel You should always do what you love but not as a job. For me if I did what I loved as an everyday I have to do it job then It wouldnt be something I love anymore but something I had to do for a living..boring. :)
I enjoy working on computers and have done it as a full time job before (unfortunately it didn't work out due to how cut throat the business world can be) but I loved it! I still enjoy doing house calls to this day. Even if I face with something new or difficult the feeling of accomplishment after finishing whatever is needed is worth the pressure and stress of the task. Others may disagree saying it just isn't worth it but it all depends on you because not everyone is the same. BTW <3 the vids
Well as a 15 year old....My intrests involve basiclly nothing music and YouTube. And at this point,a career that had to do with those would be AMAZING!!! But as I look to the future I understand that mixing hobbies and career could have downfalls. Having pressure to do well could kill your love for whatever it is you work in,and that would stink.
I think in a certain sense it can be a great thing for your career to also be your hobby or passion. Like you said, that way you can spend your time perfecting your craft and you also love your job. There's not much worse then thinking that for the rest of your like you're gonna be stuck doing some horrible monotonous job that you hate. On the other hand, it can be dangerous, too because you're putting so much pressure on what you love. You have to focus so much on success that you can't enjoy y
For myself, I would say, definitely keep them separate. I would stress out way too much and then it would not be fun to do what I loved anymore and could even turn into me not liking it at all.... I think that is just too tragic of a possibility.
As someone who has gone from paid youth worker to volunteer and am also trying to sell jewellery I'm making just now, I'd say there are definitely positives both ways! It's infuriating when something you love becomes heavy, hard or tedious, but it's such a joy to be doing what you love so much of the time! I'd say a lot of the issues come from the same source as issues in any job, but it feels harder because it's about something you love. Totally worth it for the good times though!
if you do what you love for a living, then you never have to go to work. i love to cook, so now i am going to culinary school to build a career doing what i love :)
I think it depends on your hobbies and interests, but, to whatever extent possible, you should look at yourself and ask: What am I good at? What do I enjoy? How can I incorporate this into my profession? Not all hobbies have an obviously outgrowth as a profession, but if you brainstorm, you can come up with a multitude of possibilites.
I think you should definitely do what you love, but at the same time I understand the hesitation that comes with it. I mean, I love writing and I'd love to have books published, but I can't really see myself having the "careerer" of an author because that would just be... awkward. I don't want to write in order to make money, I just want to write because that's what makes me happy. I'd actually feel weird + pressured making an income off of it.
I think God gave each of us special interests and abilities, and we should use those to do whatever He wants us to do with them. If that means a career in that field, then great! I personally LOVE history and I plan on going to college and having a history major, and HOPEFULLY I can get a job where I can use that, to God's glory :)
I'am in theater school. It was my hobby and my dream. I went to do auditions for the school and beyond my own expectations I got true. I am now in my second semester and I could not be more greatfull for the chance that I got.
This school has given me the posibillity of living for my dream and hobby and for me it has been great!
Yes, if it's possible to mix your career and your hobbies, then I think you should. Educating myself to become a professional dancer I no longer think of dancing as a hobby. I've found that for me, the heartbreak that comes naturally with such a vulnerable position is worth it. Sometimes it's the pain that makes it worth it, the pain can remind me of that even though you make a living out of your hobby, there's always new things to find and love!
@onequarterbrit Oh wow, that's really awesome to hear. I've wondered a lot if the vulnerability and possible pain is worth it, and it's so wonderful to hear that it is from someone who's actually followed their dreams. :) Thanks for sharing that!!
@onequarterbrit Definitely, I'm a part time painter (artist), and a full time student. I don't use my body like you would, but a lot of the time the chemicals of the paints I use affect my wellbeing and sometimes I feel that doing something that I love and actually being able to profit from it is a gift. I constantly have to find new mediums for my art but it really helps out emotionally to express myself, I'd love to make it a career but the closest thing I'll be able to do is teaching art.
I think it would be really great if I could do what I love for a living, but I've kind of already made the wrong choices and there is no going back really, I hope to do what I love for a living one day. =)
It really depends on the person I think. I love writing as a hobby and if someone offered me out of the blue a position to write full time I'd probably think Great! Just do what I love for money! but for that particular interest I think it being a job would make it lose it's novelty. I'd get tired of it and frustrated and not enjoy it anymore. But at the same time if someone did that to me with acting, I could probably do it forever. It depends on the person and the subject.
It's a question of liking the life you're living or living the life you like. I'm liking the life I'm living, in that I'm lined up to start studying Psychology - a field which doesn't really work as a hobby, but which I am passionate about and can get a job in. My other hobbies (namely, acting, writing and music) are harder to make a living off, but are still great things to do in my spare time. I think I would love them less if I tried to do them professionally.
Definitely for sure always try to make a career out of what you love to do and are good at doing. I certainly don't have a "career" yet, but I've been beyond lucky to have three different jobs at the same time all doing things that I love . If you were made to have a talent and passion for something, it would be pretty sad if all you ever used it for was to kill time as a hobby and didn't get to use it to contribute to the world.
Also, the passions those jobs relate to are music and writing, so you don't need to have "practical" passions to have a job related to your hobbies. Artsy stuff works too.
I always assumed that my job should be my hobby. But lately my dreams seem too crazy for me to believe that I would succeed in the area I was thinking about. I'm starting to think that I might be forced to take up a regular job and that scares me a little bit. The thing about pressure is true but on the other hand I doubt I will be able to get the sense of accomplishment from another job. Right now you could guess that grocery store isn't my hobby but I'm hoping it's just a transition :)
Thank you for making videos, they always make my day a little better :) Somehow you always manage to talk about the things that are on my mind as well!
Well, writers and musicians (and other people with careers like that) have chosen to make their passion/hobby their career, and most of them seem to enjoy it (especially seeing how all those famous people are always saying "I'm so blessed to be here").
Those fields are generally very hard to make a career of so I am assuming that they enjoy it because why would someone attempt to make a living in such a field if they don't enjoy it.
My conclusion: Lucky people have hobbies for jobs.

I inadvertently mixed my hobby and "career" by challenging one of my coworkers to find my videos almost two years ago and he did and told everyone about them. It turned out better than expected because now I don't have to keep youtube a secret from anyone. (except that I still haven't publically told all my friends/extended family that I make youtube videos.)
@Voldey Hahahah, oh dear. People in my life have found out about my videos, too. I agree, it's nice to not have to keep the secret, but it's a little embarrassing to talk about them, still. Or utterly humiliating, like when my best friend's dad jokingly asked for my autograph. *blush* Ohhh, Youtube, haha.
Yes i think its good & smart if u involve things u love to do with your job.
Depending on what it is.
If you get a chance to do something you love & get money at the same time, its just seems a really smart thing to do. You will be happy while you are doing it & thats what counts at the end
I read the tittle of this video as 'mixing hobbits with your career' which i am all for. But seriously if you can find a job that is like a hobby to you and it doesn't ruin that hobby and you still find it enjoying then you're living the dream!
Also just want to say I find i think its amazing that your name is Melinda because you remind me so much if Melinda from The Ghost Whisperer...
2 years ago I came to college as a music major and I thought that I really wanted my passion to be my career but I started to realize that while I love flute, it is A LOT of pressure and for me made it stop being fun. I know for me since my career was going to depend completely on how talented I was, I started to go crazy cause anytime I wasn't practicing I felt like I was going to not have a career. Now I'm doing something I still enjoy, but flute is just on the side and I'm much happier :)
I'm a professional programmer and I absolutely love it, its been my hobby since I first knew what the word programming meant. I couldn't possibly imagine doing anything else as a career, and I knew this would be my career since I was a child =]
To mix your niche with your job really depends on what that niche is. for instance mixing a skill with a job is good, there are many programers and security experts that do so every day. however mixing a sport with a job such as poker or soccer makes the sport lose its luster. so if you are mixing a skill with a job then yes go for it, but if it is a sport then no.
Because my plan is to be a chef and we can always improve I think that it is important that i use a lot of time making food and improve making food. For me it isn't important that i make money, but that i have a passion for making food.
I went to college for 3d animation and vfx but specialized in 3d modeling. I've always loved designing characters, sketching and thinking about video game ideas. Now, that I do it for work, it's a bit stressful because I feel like my hobby has turned into a chore rather than just having fun and making art. I started playing music in my spare time to get my brain the visual overload. I had to find a new hobby.
i think it would be a great thing as long as its something you love to do mix as much things as possible always remember why your doing it and when it isn't fun anymore then maybe its time to take a break from it. don't forget why your doing it in the first place :)
Well, I would say that personally, I would hate doing something that doesn't involve my passion for music. I plan to be a Music Educator, because I've never felt so connected to others and to myself than when I'm listening to Gustav Holst or playing a David Maslanka piece. I think that in order to be successful in a career field, you need to enjoy it.
For me I've always been told "Find out what you love and do that." Hence pursuing my career in stage management and technical theatre. I don't think it's dangerous because even on the crappiest of jobs and after the most stressful of days I evaluate and know that I still LOVE theatre and couldn't be luckier to be working in the thing that I love.
@properliz That's awesome! Gives me hope, for sure. I suppose making it work just takes that moment of stepping back every once in awhile and remembering why you do what you do.
im extremely independant so mixing bussines with pleasure is not my thing...i would feel very presured...for people who dont have that issue i think it would be awesome!i could only do it if i was the boss.
I'm not exactly, so my answer is literal. I've found that these kinds of sayings to be true; "Do what you love, the money will follow". Not to say one should be totally impractical... but you can mix your hobby with your career. It helps give it a lot of real meaning. It does drain sometimes, but then you just return to your base and rediscover why you loved it in he first place.
You're job should be the thing you love to do the most. Personally, if I didn't love my job, I wouldn't do it.
But the way to balence it out like you mentioned is to have more than one hobby or passion. You should have the one main thing that you do, but then everybody needs some little side projects to de-stress and just to make life more interesting.
It depends on the job. It failed for me. I loved animals and worked as a dog trainer. I had to shut my mouth to abuse, neglect, and stupidity for the sake of a paycheck. I only last a few months.
People always say "I'd rather do a job that pays less that I love than some corporate job that pays well that I hate" but I guess Im too cynical for that. The way I see it, Id rather have a great paying job thats boring, working 9-5, where I can retire early and live the rest of my life the way I want, or be able to afford nicer/longer vacations.
Also, Id hate to have the thing I love become stressful or a chore. If you do that, you risk having what you love become some monotonous task.
"Just Do the Next Thing" almost made me cry, because I can relate to EVERYTHING you mentioned in that video. College has me so stressed about my future which is leading to a sudden and extreme lack of interest in my major that is being reflected in my grades, causing more stress. I've always been my own worst enemy, and even more so lately. In regard to this video, I've wondered that for a long time... I'm really not sure what a "hobby" is versus just an interest.
@missmelohhh Oh my gosh, are we like...the same person? Lol sorry, just I'm in the near exact same situation...and yes, it sucks. But we must perservere! and do the next thing. Good luck!
I think it's good for your career to be something you're passionate about, but I also think you should always be doing something else unrelated to your passion, because if you don't take a break from it every once and a while, you start to become disillusioned with it.
@bandgeek8408 Truth! I think I've come to realize that there is a subtle but distinct difference between hobbies and your real passion - not that they can't overlap. But still, one has to be careful not to mistake one for another.
I definitely think doing what you love for a living is a good thing, especially if you're like me and believe that our talents and passions are something that is God given to use for His glory.
I think you're right that its dangerous though. If you're not careful, something you once loved becomes a burden and if you don't have the right mindset, there's a risk of letting the passion of your hobby become stronger then your passion for God.
And something about being financially secure, blah blah.
I think that it would be a great thing to do. I think it would make your everyday work life much more enjoyable. However, some people would argue that it would make you hate your hobby if you incorporate it with your work. I guess it really depends on the Person.
I think it's really subjective. Some people are able to balance it, other can't and their hooby/job becomes a living hell. I'm hoping I'm one of those people who can balance, but I've never been good at moderation :S
@OMGTHERERNONAMESAAGH Truth! It's definitely subjective. :) And I am the same way, hahaha, I've never been good at moderation. But the fact that we recognize it is at least a good starting place. :)
Mixing work with hobbies? Why wouldn't you? I don't want to do a job I dislike or wouldn't have fun doing. If I'm going to do something I don't want to (work) then I should do something that I'm either good at or have fun doing.
I think it is natural to mix them if you look at from a christian perspective. I think some of the things we enjoy and are good at are gifts we have been given to to be able to use them in a way glorifying to God. Soli Deo Gloria :)
I think that your profession should definitely contain some of your hobbies/ interests. But I think you also need to have other hobbies that are completely separate, so your whole life doesn't revolve around your job.
I think you should love your job and do what you love, and for me, doing what I love is involving my hobbies of photography and writing. I think it's possible to make a living off of your hobbies. Maybe you can't earn enough to have an extremely extravagant lifestyle, but if you're doing what you love, you should be happy, and if you're happy, that's what counts. (:
in the immortal words of teddy Roosevelt "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." and i think that relates to what you are saying. it is good to do something you love and is worth doing so to a degree it is great to mix you hobbies with your career but at times it stops becoming a career and more a lazy thing you do. just my two cents.
@highpiegon That is an amazing quote! And awesome thoughts, you definitely need to pursue what you pursue for the right reasons. ....if that made sense at all. :)
I'm an independent film maker it's also my biggest hobby I plan on going deeper into film and hoping to become a successful film maker I very much want to mix my hobby with my future job
for me i have decided it would be a bad idea to turn my *hobbies* into a career, but a good idea to turn my *passion* into a career. my hobbies are singing, playing guitar, and acting, but i have absolutely no intention of trying to be paid for those things, no matter how much i love them. i'm staying far away form the entertainment industry! but my passion is social justice and working for human rights, so i want to work for a non-profit humanitarian organization. so yeah, that's me.
Mixing anything with anything could be dangerous, such as Mentos and Pepsi.
But considering I do mix my hobbies (stop-frame animation) with my job (working at a Lego store), I guess the real question is, would both be compatible? Maybe mixing your hobbies with work aren't possible, or one conflicts with the other? Either way, do what you love, and love what you do. Keep smiling sunshine.
my question to you is why would you not turn what you love into a career? as long as your sure that's something that would never get old and you positively love it, why not get paid to do it? .... assuming your hobby isn't something negative like blowing things up.... which i guess could be a career in demolition or the national gaurd (...i think). really where is the harm? i would love to hear the opposing argument to this but really i can't see anything that could possibly be negative
I personally think that you should do the things you are interested in and that you enjoy but I also think that having one job for your whole live even if you love it can get boring
I feel like you can mix the two as long as you remember that you're doing what you love and the money is just supporting your hobby. I review books for my channel and my blog, but I remind myself to enjoy what I'm doing rather than rushing to get something done. If I rush, it's only to get to the next book! :]
That's a difficult question. One of my passions is fashion: it's history, art importance, psychology, & just the "oooo clothes!!!" part. Many people have encouraged me to continue with that in a job. But in my opinion that is not the passion that I want to track down. I have an intense desire to help people. I know that I could raise money, etc. through fashion, but that's not it. I need to be physicaly there helping the impoverished. That is more a core character trait, less of a hobby.
This reminded me of Nick & Norahs infinite playlist in the sense that Norah didn't want to work in the music industry in the fear that this will ruin her love for music. But in relating to me I think I would love to be doing something relating to my hobbies and interests, because if I didn't then I don't think I would be happy. Hope you had a great day ^_^
This is going to be a pointless answer but I guess it depends. I love to write, I'm studying law which plays on my strengths with english but at the same time, it's not exactly what I love...I still just write in my spare time :).
I think if what you love can be a career then go for it, how could that ever be a bad thing?
Interesting question. I think in general its great to have a career doing something you love. But there is a big difference between a job you love and a hobby. I love my career so much its my biggest passion, but I'm not sure id call it a hobby. I consider it my profession,as much as I love it it is something i take very serious. So I'm not sure id call it a hobby. If you have a hobby you love, doing it everyday as a career might cause you to lose your passion for it.
I love Photography and playing Guitar; and while i think that it would be amazing to have a career in either the truth is that i probebly never will. While im all for doing what you love & loving what you do its hard to see a light where all mundane careers bore and disinterest you. I know it doesn't really help but the truth is im not the one who should be giving awnsers as im torn between what i want to do and what is exspected of me.
no one should have a job they hate. but if what you love is unrealistic, not because you're not good, but because its a hard career, you should go for it if that's what you want, but have something you'd atleast like to do to fall back on, so that you don't end up as a water becouse you didn't become the next madona.
but if what you love is a more "normal" job, like me who loves plants, and therfor wants to be a gardener, then go for it. do what you love, as long as it can suporte you
Me personally I would never ever mix the two and that comes from experience. I also find that "I want to do what I love" is often an easy excuse to do nothing at all.
I was once doing exactly what you described. What started as a hobbie became a passion, and after a while it bacame my job. I was getting paid to do what I love to do. However, as can sometimes happen things didn't work out, life got in the way, and I could no longer support myself doing what I loved. I moved on, but I miss it terribly. To this day I plot and scheme about how I can return to those "good old days". If you ever get a similar opprotunity, don't hesitate for a second. Do it.
@lifein2011 I was a martial arts instructor. A typical day at the office involved playing with antiquated weaponry and teaching children the proper way to thow your opponent over your shoulder. It was a lot of fun.
When I was a kid, I loved playing flight simulators, but as I grew up, I realized I didn't want to be a pilot because it might ruin that. Now, I don't play flight simulators, but I'm also glad I'm not a pilot.
Then again, you should probably do what you're good at doing. If you can "double-dip" and you enjoy it, good on you!
Depends on the hobby and I know that is the worthless answer. Like I feel I have a skill with children so I was thrilled to go work with kids when I got out of grad school. But I enjoy doodling and I would not want to do that for career or make money on it, but that maybe due to skill level. I think what you need is a couple kind friends/family or even an outside judge to help evaluate if it is plausible.
However if it is art the internet is making it easier and easier to make a living wage.
I think that it depends on what kind of job it is. Like, for example, a hair stylist. They can do that all day and thats what they're into. But if you go to something like a programmer, or a professional video-gamer, then the last thing that they will want to do when they get home is play videogames, or program.
I'm split on the subject. I can see how it would be an awesome bonus to have something you love doing as a career; however, if that hobby or passion becomes work and not enjoyment, you may lose interest in that hobby or passion. Normally, I have hardly ever heard of this occurring, but it is just a thought. I think I would rather have my hobby as a job than not, though.
Of course I think it's a good idea to mix hobbies and interests with careers. Anyone who says doing what they love for work will destroy their love for it believes that work is always a bad thing. It's ridiculous to believe that work can never be looked at in a positive light. Is it so hard to believe that work can be enjoyable? And if not, is it much harder to believe doing what you're interested in can stay interesting even if it's for work?
@DavidVlogs "Anyone who says doing what they love for work will destroy their love for it believes that work is always a bad thing."
That's GOLD. I've never seen it in that light. I guess it just boils down to motives (when it comes to art-related things, at least). If one pursues music/art for money or fame or anything other than love of the art, it's going to - well, pardon me for being melodramatic for a moment - ruin the person. haha
I dunno why you'd think its "dangerous" to mix what you love with what you want to do for a living. I personally can't imagine doing a "joe job" for money and keep my art as just a personal thing. I've never thought of doing anything else really. :S
I'd love to teach drawing and painting, but it would still be "doing what I love" as a career. If you do it to the best of your ability and invest a large amount of time in it, why wouldn't you want to make a living at it?
@ArbiterChrono I suppose I just think the pressure of doing what you love for money might eventually take away the joy of what you love. But I see what you're saying! The questions is probably just stemmed from my negativity, hahaha.
But I admire your lack of doubt! That is seriously commendable. :)
@lifein2011 Hahaha! Thanks! I'm not sure how commendable it is to only do what you want instead of getting a "real job" (I'm in Illustration,) but It`s how I`m going.
I really like what someone said about "work" being a bad thing! Makes so much sense to me. I can paint to relax, or draw, but I can do it as a job to. Its all about attitude and doing your best I think.
P.s. Love your vids! Very nice snippets that make me smile and make me think too! :D
For me personally, I NEED to do what I love. I'm the kind of person who just can't concentrate or do my best at things unless I'm actually passionate about it. Which is why I don't do too well in school, I suppose. xD I couldn't even imagine making a career out of something that I don't love.
And just so you know, I've become a tad bit addicted to your videos. (x I've been waiting all day for this.
The mixing hobbies with your career thing is something I think about a lot, I may make a video response, although I probably won't be able to for a few days and by then you'll have posted a bunch more videos!
But basically I think it can be problematic, it can cause you to not enjoy your hobby anymore if it becomes "work"...also you'll likely need a new hobby if your current hobby becomes your job! But if it does work out well, then that could make for a pretty damn awesome life.
He told me you should do what you love to do and if you can make a career out of it, then you should. I know in some cases hobbies should be separate from careers, I have to say that if you love doing something, and there's a job out their pertaining to that hobby, then you should hope for the best and try and make a career out of it.

The day you find a way to make money doing what you love, is the last day you work...

MissSarcastic15 1 year ago
I think in a certain sense it can be a great thing for your career to also be your hobby or passion. Like you said, that way you can spend your time perfecting your craft and you also love your job. There's not much worse then thinking that for the rest of your like you're gonna be stuck doing some horrible monotonous job that you hate. On the other hand, it can be dangerous, too because you're putting so much pressure on what you love. You have to focus so much on success that you can't enjoy y
orillshaveitforlater 1 year ago

I think it depends on your hobbies and interests, but, to whatever extent possible, you should look at yourself and ask: What am I good at? What do I enjoy? How can I incorporate this into my profession? Not all hobbies have an obviously outgrowth as a profession, but if you brainstorm, you can come up with a multitude of possibilites.
robinreads 1 year ago
I think you should definitely do what you love, but at the same time I understand the hesitation that comes with it. I mean, I love writing and I'd love to have books published, but I can't really see myself having the "careerer" of an author because that would just be... awkward. I don't want to write in order to make money, I just want to write because that's what makes me happy. I'd actually feel weird + pressured making an income off of it.
You just have to do what feels right, I guess. :P

I think God gave each of us special interests and abilities, and we should use those to do whatever He wants us to do with them. If that means a career in that field, then great! I personally LOVE history and I plan on going to college and having a history major, and HOPEFULLY I can get a job where I can use that, to God's glory :)

Yes, if it's possible to mix your career and your hobbies, then I think you should. Educating myself to become a professional dancer I no longer think of dancing as a hobby. I've found that for me, the heartbreak that comes naturally with such a vulnerable position is worth it. Sometimes it's the pain that makes it worth it, the pain can remind me of that even though you make a living out of your hobby, there's always new things to find and love!
onequarterbrit 1 year ago
@onequarterbrit Oh wow, that's really awesome to hear. I've wondered a lot if the vulnerability and possible pain is worth it, and it's so wonderful to hear that it is from someone who's actually followed their dreams. :) Thanks for sharing that!!
lifein2011 1 year ago
@onequarterbrit Definitely, I'm a part time painter (artist), and a full time student. I don't use my body like you would, but a lot of the time the chemicals of the paints I use affect my wellbeing and sometimes I feel that doing something that I love and actually being able to profit from it is a gift. I constantly have to find new mediums for my art but it really helps out emotionally to express myself, I'd love to make it a career but the closest thing I'll be able to do is teaching art.

QueenOfTheAubergines 1 year ago

ElVlogKiwi 1 year ago
Definitely for sure always try to make a career out of what you love to do and are good at doing. I certainly don't have a "career" yet, but I've been beyond lucky to have three different jobs at the same time all doing things that I love . If you were made to have a talent and passion for something, it would be pretty sad if all you ever used it for was to kill time as a hobby and didn't get to use it to contribute to the world.
shufflemonkey16 1 year ago
@shufflemonkey16

Voldey 1 year ago
@Voldey Hahahah, oh dear. People in my life have found out about my videos, too. I agree, it's nice to not have to keep the secret, but it's a little embarrassing to talk about them, still. Or utterly humiliating, like when my best friend's dad jokingly asked for my autograph. *blush* Ohhh, Youtube, haha.

Well, I would say that personally, I would hate doing something that doesn't involve my passion for music.
Xol1004 1 year ago
You're job should be the thing you love to do the most. Personally, if I didn't love my job, I wouldn't do it.
But the way to balence it out like you mentioned is to have more than one hobby or passion. You should have the one main thing that you do, but then everybody needs some little side projects to de-stress and just to make life more interesting.

If you do that, you risk having what you love become some monotonous task.
mollyollypops 1 year ago
"Just Do the Next Thing" almost made me cry, because I can relate to EVERYTHING you mentioned in that video. I think it's good for your career to be something you're passionate about, but I also think you should always be doing something else unrelated to your passion, because if you don't take a break from it every once and a while, you start to become disillusioned with it.
bandgeek8408 1 year ago
@bandgeek8408 Truth! I think I've come to realize that there is a subtle but distinct difference between hobbies and your real passion - not that they can't overlap. But still, one has to be careful not to mistake one for another.

I definitely think doing what you love for a living is a good thing, especially if you're like me and believe that our talents and passions are something that is God given to use for His glory.
I think you're right that its dangerous though. If you're not careful, something you once loved becomes a burden and if you don't have the right mindset, there's a risk of letting the passion of your hobby become stronger then your passion for God.
And something about being financially secure, blah blah.
asimpleseed 1 year ago
I think that it would be a great thing to do. I think it would make your everyday work life much more enjoyable. However, some people would argue that it would make you hate your hobby if you incorporate it with your work. I guess it really depends on the Person.

But considering I do mix my hobbies (stop-frame animation) with my job (working at a Lego store), I guess the real question is, would both be compatible? That's a difficult question. One of my passions is fashion: it's history, art importance, psychology, & just the "oooo clothes!!!" part. Many people have encouraged me to continue with that in a job. But in my opinion that is not the passion that I want to track down. I have an intense desire to help people. I know that I could raise money, etc. through fashion, but that's not it. I need to be physicaly there helping the impoverished. That is more a core character trait, less of a hobby.

I think if what you love can be a career then go for it, how could that ever be a bad thing?
FetchMeAShrubbery 1 year ago

When I was a kid, I loved playing flight simulators, but as I grew up, I realized I didn't want to be a pilot because it might ruin that. Now, I don't play flight simulators, but I'm also glad I'm not a pilot.
Then again, you should probably do what you're good at doing. If you can "double-dip" and you enjoy it, good on you!
elorfinthendt 1 year ago
Depends on the hobby and I know that is the worthless answer. Like I feel I have a skill with children so I was thrilled to go work with kids when I got out of grad school. But I enjoy doodling and I would not want to do that for career or make money on it, but that maybe due to skill level. I think what you need is a couple kind friends/family or even an outside judge to help evaluate if it is plausible.
However if it is art the internet is making it easier and easier to make a living wage.
ThePlatypodes 1 year ago
@ThePlatypodes Not a worthless answer! That's exactly the conclusion I've come to, it just....depends. haha.

I think that it depends on what kind of job it is. Like, for example, a hair stylist. They can do that all day and thats what they're into. But if you go to something like a programmer, or a professional video-gamer, then the last thing that they will want to do when they get home is play videogames, or program.

If one pursues music/art for money or fame or anything other than love of the art, it's going to - well, pardon me for being melodramatic for a moment - ruin the person. haha

@lifein2011 I totally agree! A person who's working for personal happiness is going to gain so much more than someone who works for money. :)
And no worries, I like a little melodrama here and there haha.

I think you should mix them... I don't think I would stand doing something if it didn't interest me in the least bit.

@alyiswriting I agree entirely. It's such a tricky balance. Oh and hey, I'd love it if you made a video response! :)
