Good call, stupid rule. I was at this game. (Not a fan of either team) I was actually kinda shocked when they made the call, but it is a penalty.

he didnt spike the ball, he threw it 30 feet in the air. my team is wvu. after a big run, noel devine tossed the ball a couple feet above his head, caught it, and got the same call.

It was as close to cheating as you can get. I don't necessarily blame the refs as much as the conferences or NCAA that pass ambiguous or illogical rules that place the outcome of games in the hands of individuals other than the players.

I think it's telling that the ref didn't throw the flag when the ball was thrown, but after it hit the ground. I don't think he was flagging the toss into the air, he just thought he saw something he didn't actually see. And when the officials were made to account for their call, they dug into the rule book to justify changing the outcome of an otherwise exciting game. The UW wouldn't neccesarily have won if the refs waved the flag off; but the players-not the refs-would've decided the game.

When a team goes 12 for 14 on on third down conversions, scores a touchdown on 4 out of the 8 drives (plus, driving 97 yards in another before making a fumble), and blocks a 35 yard PAT attempt to win the game, they (BYU) deserve to win the game without people thinking UW got screwed.... and I'm a Husky fan. That said, BYU isn't a top 20 team. If you take the teams in the upper halves of any BCS conference, they would beat BYU. Washington just isn't good right now.

Lots of BYU fans taking a 'it's a rule' stance who would be just as upset if the call was made against their team. Listen to the broadcasters and the Fox crew the next day (Bradshaw etc) the ref needs to keep the flag in his pocket. Bad call period.

BYU thought the refs had their flags sewed in their pockets, as many holding and other penalties happened the last quarter especially the last UW drive. PAC 10 refs are truly pathetic.

The celebration penalty should be changed. It is a stupid rule. Untill it is changed, better keep the ball out of the air.

To all the haters kicking the dawgs while their down, get it in while you can because we will be back. That being said, BYU probably would have won in OT, but we'll never know. The ref, instead, inserted himself into a game that would have been one for the ages, and robbed both BYU and the UW of the opportunities such a memorable game would have provided each football program. BYU gets a tainted win (causing them to drop int he polls) and the UW gets another kick in the teeth.

The ball was airborne for 2.45s (2.44 and 2.48 by my stopwatch). This translates into being thrown just under 25 feet into the air.

Seems like a rather simple call to make, and the FJ easily made the ball. Kudos to him.

The NCAA has considered this illegal since ~ 1983.

How high was the ball thrown? To me it looked more like 25-30 feet.

Officials do make judgement calls all the time, this however was not one of those situations. Very clear, black and white. That being said, it's a very bad rule which should be amended. Too bad they couldn't make the chip-shot PAT. BYU's D-line made the play that decided the outcome of the game. Besides, is there really any doubt that BYU would have scored 7 points in OT? And every OT afterwards if needed?

First of all, I'm a die hard alum of the UW and I played in the band. I hate this call. It ruins the flavor of what makes college football better than the NFL. I understand that they have to make that call. Locker clearly threw the ball a good 10 ft in the air. A rule is a rule. The flag was correct. The rule however needs to be removed as it was totally inappropriate.

Wow from this video it's pretty clear why he got flagged. From all the angles on ESPN it looks like it just flicked it over his shoulder. If ESPN was showing this there would be a lot less debate about this.

Did anyone hear the update? The refs admitted they used a "judgement" call when they DIDN'T flag BYU for spiking the ball after its first touchdown in this game.

Oops. That thud you heard was the collective Cougar leg falling off -- no longer have one to stand on. Guess refs don't have to enforce all rules...just the ones they want.

At least UW and BYU have something in common - no BCS bowl for either this year.

The sad part is what happened next when UW failed to make an extra distance from the same distance that the kicker on my HS football team routinely makes.

Washington had 3 penalties the whole game. 2 of which were celebration. BYU beat them all over the field even with the no call holdings every play and PI on the tight end. It was poor officiating for Washington and not to mention that BYU did block the kick.

You do realize taht wouldn't have happend if it were at the 3. That is like saying "I batted down the 25 yard pass." and then saying it would have been the same if "I batted down the 4 yard slant pattern." They are two different times, in other words 2 different plays can't result in the same thing. The ref screwed over Washingtons chances. Oh by the way I am a Trojan fan. And that is a terrible simile, a pass changes depending on how far you need to throw it because. When you are in the middle of the field you kick a field goal the same exact way(I was a backup kicker/starting saftey in HS so I have first hand experince) no matter how far back you are

Actually, the angle you have to kick from 15 yards back is significantly lower in order for it to have the correct trajectory.

The point is, why call this and not the BYU celebration infraction? If they were going to call one, they should have called the other, but since they didn't, this was a bad call.

No the angle isn't different, for 15 yards or 1500 yards. From the middle you are always supposed to kick the ball the same.... this isn't madden this is real life. Being a kicker is all about consitancy and it's impossible to get consistancy if you are changing your trajectory everytime you kick.

And they did call a flag when BYU ran on to the field.

face it UW is just embarassed that they got there kick blocked, UCLA was embarrased when there game winning kick got blocked last year.

number one, I know from experience that you don't kick a ball the same regardless of distance. There's a little thing called physics that backs me up on this. Also, I have experience.

The flag after BYU stormed the field didn't affect the game. The flag that should have been thrown for BYU's spiked ball could have.

From the middle of the field you kick the ball the same no matter how far. If the UW kickers don't know this then they suck and but still BYU was 4 yards into the backfield, Adam Vinteri would of gotten his kick blocked it wouldn't have mattered

I too know that you don't kick the same on a PAT and a 35 yarder, from experience as well. I also know, you don't belong in Division A Football as a kicker if you can't get it up enough from 35 yards. Granted, his line didn't do him any favors - though they did their best at cheating, er holding the defensive surge.

And for the record, "Spiking" the football is SLAMMING it to the ground, not dropping it through your legs as your momentum carries you by.

You are the bias one. I am not. I am not a Husky fan I am a big time Trojan fan. My dad, mom, grandparents all went their so pretty much i have Trojan blood in me and its instilled since I was a little kid. Therefore, my opinion really matters more than yours because I dont like the Huskies its just a fact, they-got-screwed. BYU will never be more than an halfway 'decent' team.
