I love this song and it never fails to lift my spirits when Im low or fighting some battle in my life, it reminds me that God will NEVER leave us nor forsake us no matter what, Im in His hands !
Many years later, when Commissioner Stanley Ditmer was about to be "Promoted to Glory" (a term The Army uses to refer to someone dying & going to heaven), Bernie Dake called me and asked if I knew the song. I didn't, so he sung the chorus to me over the phone. I went to the keyboard and penned this simple arrangement. I'm just as surprised as you are, @nightdmon, that it has been used as much as it has. :) Perhaps it's a testament to its message of comfort...
:) Hey, to each his own. I agree the melody's not particularly memorable. :)
The "story" behind the song goes back quite a ways. The original version by Stanley Ditmer (an officer in The Salvation Army) was written when he was a young man struggling with a pretty serious illness - I believe he was close to death at the time. He wrote "I'm In His Hands" during that time. The Lord healed him and he enjoyed a long life and ministry...

@k0smon So very true. The original tune with these words fit together perfectly. This new tune is boring, unmemorable, and do these words absolutely no justice. And yes if you know the background about these words and chorus you would be less inclined to want to change anything about it.
@nightdmon I disagree with you on the part of this not being memorable. I had this version pop in my head the other day while working on some stuff around my house. I love both tunes and honestly, I think it is more about the words... which are the same. Each melody strikes a person differently, but the words remain the same and true to His faithfulness. God bless!
What a powerful and moving song! I really appreciate the composer and arranger of this song...You did not only touch our hearts but you made us realized that we're in God's hands what ever happens....To god be the Glory!
Continue to use Salvation Army Hymns in making praise and worship songs. God bless you!
this arrangement of my uncle's I'm in His Hands always moves me to tears. Thanks Phil for a beautiful arrangement, blessing and constant reminder of Uncle Stan's faithfulness to His Saviour. ~Jeff S.
repsonding to a comment below. i believe the song was written when his brother Bernie was diagnosed with cancer. Not positive though.
Stan Ditmer is my uncle.

I definitely like the original tune better.
This song is much more meaningful if you know the background to it.
