You're welcome. I am like you, was born in Laos and grew up in the USA. I was fortunated to speak Tai flurently but there is a lot more that I don't know about our Tai culture and history. Thanks for stopping by!
@jamyang801 I have lived in Chiangmai and Fang in the North of Thailand for the past 19 years and can understand this song well since to me it sounds very similar to Lanna Thai...which is also similar to Lao. There are many Tai (Shan) from Burma here and I am starting to learn their language and writing too. May all Tai people be able to return to their home lands one day.
My grandma was Tai dam. She spoke a different version of Laotian while I was growing up and later on in her teens learned to speak Vietnamese from her husband.
Was your grandpa a Tai Dam too? Both of my parents were Tai Dam, but only my father knew how to speak Vietnamese because he had to learned it in school.
Tai Dam from Laos are the descendants of Tai Dam came from the northwest of Vietnam. This region was annexed as part of Vietnam in 1889 by the French. From that time on, Tai Dam lived in this region had to learn to speak Vietnamese. As of today, there are not too many Tai Dam in Laos are able to speak Vietnamese, but they are still be able to speak Tai Dam for sure.
It is good to hear from our Pi Nong Tai in Korat. But most of the Pi Nong Tai in Thailand forget their brothers who were trapped and pressed by the Burmese Army in Burma.

Hey, thanks for putting this up... Bad to admit, but yes, the kids that are Taidam in the US (Iowa) are starting to forget. We do LOVE our culture, but don't know enough about it, and should keep the language/culture going ... I'm starting to forget how to speak it myself.... yikes!!
Thank you Stephie for taking time to make comment on my video. You're right we don't have much info about our culture. Wish our older generations are more open and share more info so our younger ones can keep the culture going. By the way, you have a great voice!
Merci énormément pour ce partage ! Je suis une Thaï dam vivant en France...ne parlant malheureusement plus très bien le thaï...Je garde pourtant espoir quant à l'avenir de nos coutumes :))
You're welcome. Try to speak our language with your family, your Tai Dam will get better. I still work on some videos about our culture and I will upload them as soon as they are finished. Meanwhile, check on my playlists to see someone's videos about Tai Dam. Merci pour le comment.
This issue has been a growing concern for many Tai Dam communities around the world. In Iowa, they are in the process of making a Tai Dam cultural place called Tai Village. I am urging all Tai Dam out there to get involved and promote our Tai culture.
In Vietnam, Tai Dam classified under the Thai Nationality of Vietnam, which including the White and Red Tais. Within their group, they called themselves Tai Dam, Tai Don, and Tai Daeng. I still have relatives there and they used to write my father in Tai Dam scripts. In China, they are known as Jinping Dai and including in the Tai/Thai-speaking group called the Dai Nationality of China.
In Vietnam, Tai Dam script was not officially used and taught in school ever since the French annexed that area to Tonkin of Vietnam in the late 1800's. Today, not many people under 50 years old are able to read and write Tai Dam. That is sad.
I am Tai Yai from Shan State, Burma. In Burma, there are also Tai Deng in Kachin State (which is closed to India). I wonder wether Tai Deng is Vietnam and Burma are still the same. However, it is nice to hear that we still have our brothers who are far away from each other.
It's nice hear from our pi nong Tai Yai from Burma. I don't know anything about pi nong Tai Deng from Kachin State. I heard some Tai Dam elders talking about our pi nong Tais in Burma but don't have any connection. Thanks for stopping by.
i am laotian but i know all laotian are from Taidam, look at lao characters similar to taidam writrin
